Hi all,

Am I going mad or was there a cryptid called the Cornish Critter that looked like a very large Rat with mange? I cannot find anything anywhere.

Also I am sure I remember an article a long time ago on a flying cryptid called 'The Awful' but again my searching prowess is a little waning.

Any help with either or both would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

I wouldn't know, I'm afraid - I'm a bit of a fairweather mag reader. One of our illustrious mods would probably know!
Can’t recall one. Times like this I wish I had invested in the cd index someone was selling on eBay

... Did FT ever do an article on it do you know?

According to these 2007 postings on a HPL blog / site:

http://ghooriczone.blogspot.com/2007/05/lovecraft-awful.html
http://ghooriczone.blogspot.com/2007/05/lovecraft-awful-redux.html

... this story was mentioned in Fortean Times #223 (June 2007?), p. 10.

The story apparently focuses on an October 6, 2006 news item appearing in the Enosburg Falls (Vermont) County Courier. This 2006 item refers to sightings of "The Awful" in the 1920s and their resurgence in 2006.

Long story short - nobody seems to have located any mention of "The Awful" nor its alleged connection to HPL prior to this 2006 article. Furthermore, no one's found any evidence HPL ever visited Vermont prior to 1927 - two years after the article's alleged visit in 1925.

The author of the article - one H.P. Albarelli Jr. - has claimed his article is legitimate, but offered no form of evidence to support this claim.

Here are some representative summaries of the ambiguities / problems ...

..or those chaps who regularly talk about compiling an official index to the mag and the books actually get on with it.
