Flash Gordon is on Australian TV tonight! High Campness indeed!

The Devil's Rock: British Commandos, an SS Occult Unit in search of the ultimate Supernatural Weapon, Witchcraft, a shape shifting Demon. Yes, the Channel Isles were a fun place to be during WW2.

Two commandos land by dinghy on a decoy mission to sabotage gun emplacements thereby misleading the Germans as to the likely D-Day invasion sites. But they hear female screams coming from a bunker investigating they find a Lovecraftian scene, half eaten German soldiers, a soldier who has committed suicide. A Grimoire lies on the ground.

A surviving SS officer kills one commando and captures the other. Then we encounter the Demon who handily can take on the features of your loved ones. A summoning has gone wrong. The commando and SS officer are forced to cooperate.

Great Demon, ripping heads off.

Good War/Horror film, 7/10

Saw this on the Horror Channel some weeks back.
Great premise let down a little by the obvious lack of budget.

I thought the demon in its "natural" form was a little cheesy; all red make up and horns. It was just a bit... cliched.
And I thought the final death could have been done better.

However, those quibbles aside it was good to see a period horror movie, acted well, in a sea of found footage and zombie movies.

They're just links to Youtube. The movie is not stored by the FTMB.

OK, I was just worried as there's been a lot of linked movies recently and they can't all be legal!

Yeah, I think it's up to the copyright holder to go after Youtube if it shouldn't be there.

As long as we're safe, then that's fine.

Containment: Would Southampton be improved by a Viral Outbreak? Well thats what happens in this film which was made and set in Southampton. Residents on a tower block estate wake up to find themselves sealed in their apartment. Breaking through (shoddy) walls, six people link up. Outside they can see figures in hazmat suits setting up large tents. Soon residents from the ground floors are being escorted towards the tents. One makes a break for it and is shot dead.

A survival thriller where the State is withholding the full facts and treating ordinary people as expendable. 6/10.

Cub aka Welp, a Belgian slasher movie, which doesn't sound promising, but if you're a seasoned fan give it a go, it has interesting things to say about how abuse and violence breeds more abuse and violence. The plot is about a Cub Scout troop who go camping where a serial killer is supposed to lurk. Gets pretty nasty in places, surprised it was only a 15 certificate.

Harbinger Down: 1982, a Soviet re-entry capsule is spiraling out of control, the cosmonaut is doomed but there is some strange oozing material on a surface. The present, a professor & two grad students hire a crabbing trawler (although it seems to catch lobsters) in Alaska to research Global Warming and follow a pod of whales in the Bering Sea. They find part of the Soviet capsule with the cosmonauts remains inside.

One of the students discovers that the cosmonaut didn't die due to re-entry burns. Also that a biological experiment was on board involving tardigrades (water bears). The body disappears. The professor acts strangely, he seems to be burning up, then he starts growing tubules (The Thingesque)!

Some stock character: the grizzled sea captain: "anyone pulls a knife on my boat, I'll gut them", "we have seawater in our veins", (to his granddaughter); the intuitive Inuit: "Some things were meant to remain frozen".

Fair SF/Horror film which owes a debt to The Thing. 5.5/10

The Bride He Bought Online: Three high school girls play a prank on a lonely, socially inept computer programmer fooling him into thinking he has a Filipino girlfriend. When she doesn't arrive at the airport hes devastated. But things become even more painful wheb the "joke" and film of him at the airport is revealed on a blog.

Intent on revenge he uncovers the girls identities and kidnaps them, intending to sell them to sex-traffickers.

Superior TV movie, Horror/Revenge Thriller. Maintains the tension through the film without resorting to torture porn. 7/10.

Funny Man : Record producer wins old mansion in a game of cards from Mr. Chance (Christopher Lee). Unfortunately, the mansion has a resident homicidal guardian trickster demon who looks like a grotesque Mr. Punch - The Funny Man.

Went to see this at the premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival. I've since shown the DVD to quite a few people and only one person other than me likes this film. Everyone else demanded their 90 minutes back. Note : This film is made all the creepier in hindsight by one scene in which the Funny Man dresses up as Jimmy Savile.

I remember seeing that advertised on telly. Struck me as a bit weird.

Christopher Lee complained about the quality of Funny Man at the time, and the director said he wasn't surprised as he was a very old man so not exactly target audience, but then again when you think of some of the stuff he had been in, to complain about that one was really something. I will say the DVD out a few years ago had some very good extras on it.

The Thaw: Another SF/Horror film set in the Arctic which owes a debt to The Thing. This time its the look and feel of the base rather than the creature involved. Arctic areas are thawing due to Global Warming, Dr Krupien (Val Kilmer) discovers a mammoth corpse being chewed on by a polar bear. But both mamm0th and bear are now infected by a burrowing vertebrate parasite which lays eggs in humans.

The doctors team are infected and more students who arrive are in jeopardy.

Good, had me itching all over. 6/10.

Sleepaway Camp (1983) ...

It plays like a Friday The 13th slasher but the twist ending is still legendary amongst horror fans .. it's still seriously messed up.

Rocker Bruce Springsteen's sister played Angela in the sequels .. I was particularly fond of the fire cracker up the nose gag in Pt 2 ..

The full movie .. you'll thank me for not revealing the ending ..

Patrol Men (2011). A creepily dream-like and very English (in a good way) non-supernatural horror, with something of a cottage industry feel about it.

An island off the British coast enforces a kind of prissy `safety` and general conformity amongst its population with curfews that are enforced by patrol men. These mysterious figures go around wearing (unexplained) gas masks. The original concept seems to have been something like The Wicker Man meets 1984, and there are all sorts of resonances one could draw with the situation in modern Britain.

Like a lot of films of this ilk, however, it begins with a good premise then seems not to really know where to go with it and degenerates into confused action, and some hammy acting. Also, I couldn't understand why it was given an 18 certificate, as,at times, I felt very much as though I was watching something aimed squarely at a tweenie audience.

If you like suggestive, atmosphere-based horror films, then this is for you.
