Watched Naboer (Neighbour or Next Door) last night on Netflix.
A 2005 Norwegian psychological horror, with an extremely unsettling and claustrophobic vibe from the start.
John's feeling a bit down after his girlfriend leaves him, but is it wise for him to get involved with the decidedly weird girls living next door?
And are things quite as they seem?
Features some quite brutal sex scenes.
We guessed the twist some 20 minutes before the end, but it was a compelling and effectively filmed horror/thriller, which I can certainlhy recommend. 8/10.

Buffalo Bill’s Home In ‘The Silence Of The Lambs’ Will Soon Be Open To Overnight Guests

Three decades since it premiered, “The Silence of the Lambs” is still considered one of the top suspense horror movies of all time.

The film prominently featured a home in Perryopolis, Fayette County as the dwelling of serial killer Buffalo Bill. The iconic 100-year-old home went up for sale recently but wasn’t on the market for long.

“We kind of focused on the movie history, and we got six offers in the first two weeks”, said real estate agent Eileen Allen.

Chris Rowan, a huge fan of the movie, now owns the motion picture landmark. And he has killer plans for it.

“We’ll be a boutique accommodation. So you will be able to book Buffalo Bill’s house for a stay overnight,” said Rowan.

In addition to renting the home for personal stays, Rowan also plans to open it up to tours and rent it out for special events, including weddings.

Watched Becky (2019) on its Sky premier last night.

Whilst the rather over-subscribed Home Invasion Horror movie can occasionally produce something entertaining (Them, When a Stranger Calls, Inside, Straw Dogs etc.), I'm afraid Becky adds nothing of value to the genre.

A gang of really nasty escaped convicts (you can tell they are really nasty because the ringleader has a swastika tattoo) invade a family's lakeside holiday home.
But these hopeless (and hapless) criminals haven't reckoned with Becky. Just before the invasion, the sullen, pouty adolescent daughter throws a tantrum and flees to her nearby wooden cabin, where she discovers the movie's main McGuffin of a mysterious key. Becky thereby misses the drama as the villains, Manson-like, break into the home, but she hears what is going on though, thanks to a conveniently dropped walkie-talkie and witnesses her father being tortured to death.
OK so obviously a gang of 4 hardened convicts (including 7ft tall French-Canadian wrestler Robert Maillet "El Goliath Gigante") simply stand no chance against a grumpy 13 year-old girl and I suppose there is a certain inventiveness in the impromptu manner in which she fights her corner. This feels like a homage to Home Alone though, made by a 10th-rate Cronenberg wannabee and with tons of torture porn/gore thrown in.
Expect eye-gouging, impalings, weaponised dogs, home-made flame throwers, stabbings and the old favourite cholp-cholp-cholp using an outboard motor (and then reprised with a towed lawnmower for good measure).
A gutsy enough performance from 13 year old Lulu Wilson, but the whole shambles was just utterly OTT and unbelievable.
2/10 - and that is for the unintended entertainment value in eliciting hoots of derision from the viewer.

I really enjoyed Becky - you've obviously never felt the wrath of a teenage girl! I believed every minute!

Fair enough - if Home Alone, with comic-book style carnage thrown in floats your boat!

Maybe more Horror than SF.

Dark Encounter Alien abduction film with a twist. Eight year old Maisie disappears from her home without trace,.A year later, a memorial meeting is held at her school. Afterwards an acrimonious extended family gathering takes place. Strange lights appear in the sky and some of the family go to investigate. In the woods other lights appear and have strange effects on people and birds, their truck loses power. Another member of the family vanishes. They return to the house where electric toys start working , ights, radio go on and off, lights shine through windows. The house is literally under siege, Tension and paranoia build as the narrative unfolds in this dark Close Encounter Of The Third Kind. The different shades and intensities of light are used to good effect, some just illuminating/dazzling,others imposing mind control on people as a mysterious mist also enters the house. There are time slips of the mental variety which allow secrets to be uncovered. An interesting plot twist sends one aspect of the plot off in an unexpected direction. An important lesson is imparted though: if you flee a house to get away from ETs then remember to drop your axe if you want passing cars to stop and help you. Written and directed by Carl Straithie. Streaming at: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/dark-encounter 7/10.

It will definitely be interesting to see. I've always hoped someone would make a film based on King's short story The Long Walk.
Me too! .. I even cast it in my mind with Keith Gordon playing the president's son and his mate from Christine playing our hero .. and a certain Pink Floyd tune towards the end. It The Long Walk would be an exhausting film.

I'd put Nic Cage in it, but then I'd put him in everything :p

I think this news deserves Jason Mewes's tribute to that scene .. and NSFW

Clerks 2: Goodbye horses scene (Jay and Silent Bob) - YouTube

This one completely slipped under my radar .. a new horror anthology directed by Kevin Smith called ' THE HOLIDAYS' .. it doesn't look too shoddy either ..

Watched Holidays last night on Netflix.

There are 8 short stories, loosely based around significant days in the year (Valentine's day, Easter, Mothers Day, Halloween etc.).
Quality is variable but, the great thing with an anthology is that, if you don't think much of one tale, you know another will be along shortly. Moderately gory, with a dark vein of humour throughout. The pick for me, was the young girl getting the Easter Bunny confused with Jesus' resurrection, to very bizarre effect.
Probably a 5/10 from me, as some of the stories were laboured (quite literally in the Irish one) and a bit weak.

Anyone seen "Baskin"?

I haven't, but read a review the other day. Sounds gnarly.

It's dark. My reviewette:

Baskin: Turkish horror film, 5 cops have a series of misadventures, culminating in them knocking someone down and driving into a river. They all survive but are on a call out to an old building with an odd reputation. In the building they find another cop, injured and raving. They descend to the basement and literally enter the Gates of Hell. People are being tortured, eaten alive, dismembered.

Shades of Hellraiser. Not for the squeamish. 7/10.

Good stuff mate.

Does it have any worth other than gore-shock?

I watched the trailer and was a bit disoppointed. Looked more of a "splashing about cows blood" everywhere sort of thing rather than anything with more brains.

It's very dark, may well be an allegorical tale regarding Turkey's retreat from secularism. But maybe I'm reading too much into it. I thought it did have more than just gore though.

Ok, thanks. That's enough for me to check it out, when our paths cross.

I get enough blood and gore in my job so things needs to be a bit more than that for me to bother with.

The Midnight Man: It's always dangerous to try and summon up an entity, even if you're just playing what seems to be a simple game. But when that game has rules which resemble those of a Ritual, including the sprinkling of salt into protective circles, then be extra cautious. 1953, three children in an attic summon up The Midnight Man, he penetrates their defences and uses their worst fears against them. Two of the children are slain, one literally exploding into a mist of blood. 2016, the surviving child, Anna,is now an old woman, subject to bouts of dementia, cared for by her granddaughter, Alex. The game is rediscovered and Alex along with two friends set the ball rolling again. Al of the film takes place within a creepy old house or just outside of it's front door. This inspires a sense of fear and tension from the beginning as you realise that Anna's ramblings may be actually imparting some deadly secrets. The Midnight Man when he appears may wear many faces or none at all, he might be a giant rabbit seeking revenge, he could douse you in a bathtub full of blood. What gives things more of an occult sense is the fact that The Midnight Man is sly: like a Demon he will cheat and try to trick you. There's also an interesting plot twist. No masterpiece but well worth watching. 7/10.

Fellow horror fans: when you're reviewing a movie, can you please add where it can be watched - i.e. Prime, Netflix, Sky, terrestrial TV or other source?
I do read through these reviews for recommendations and plan my evening's viewing accordingly. Would be nice to know where to locate the movie.
Thanks!

I recorded The Midnight Man months ago on Film4, it's not on All4.
