Bite night on the 7 train

Chomper attacks 2 riders

By JONATHAN LEMIRE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A crazed straphanger bit off the thumb of a 71-year-old Queens man and chewed his grandson's face during a wild attack in a packed rush-hour subway car, police said yesterday.

The nightmare on the Flushing-bound 7 train began at 5 p.m. Monday when a disheveled and drunken man jumped 18-year-old Jose Velez, ripped off his own shirt and screamed, "I'm bad. You're nothing. I'm a bada--."

With the train just beyond the 61st St.-Woodside station, Velez's grandfather, Reynaldo Hidalgo, tried to come to the teen's aid, but the madman turned on him, too, cops said.

"He was crazy. He bit me in the chest and the face, and he went after my grandfather," Velez said.

"He took his thumb right off, and my grandfather just started screaming," the teen added. Ivan Rodriguez, 26, spat out the top of Hidalgo's left thumb, Velez said. The grandfather, a diabetic, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors tried unsuccessfully to reattach the digit.

Rodriguez was arrested after police, who were alerted by train workers, rushed in at the 69th St. station to help Velez, who had wrestled his attacker to the ground despite the blood gushing from the bite on his left cheek.

Hidalgo and Velez were heading to their 169th St. home in Jamaica after filing some immigration forms for a relative in their native Ecuador when they were attacked for no reason, the younger man said.

"He tried to start trouble as soon as he got on the train, but he was drunk and I didn't want no trouble," said Velez, who works at a Manhattan clothing store. "He stepped on my foot and bumped me, but I still ignored him."

Rodriguez then punched Velez, he said, sending him toppling to the floor and scattering the other passengers to the far reaches of the subway car.

"My grandfather tried to help me, and [Rodriguez] went after him and bit him," Velez said. Velez said he tackled Rodriguez, who fought back by chomping down wildly on his chest and cheek.

"It was rush hour and no one came to help, no passengers, no train employees," Velez said. "I was on my own."

Velez received seven stitches at Bellevue to close the gash on his face.

Rodriguez, who spent three days in jail last spring after being arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest, gave cops a false Corona address. Investigators are unsure whether he is homeless, a law enforcement source said.

"He's a messed-up guy. He's not all there," another source said.

Rodriguez was arraigned yesterday on two counts of first-degree assault in Queens Criminal Court, said a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. His bail was set at ,000.

"How can I feel safe on the subway anymore?" Velez asked. "Can it be a part of life now?"

A 32-year-old man was hospitalized for a bite to his groin and his girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, authorities said.

Officers found the bite victim nude, bleeding and standing in the middle of the street, according to the police report. He called police after his 26-year-old girlfriend of Reno, allegedly bit him during a drunken rage.

The woman was in the Washoe County Jail on Thursday in lieu of ,000 bail.

About 9 p.m. Wednesday, she started arguing with her boyfriend at their home in the 900 block of Haskell Street, police said. The report said she was intoxicated and started a physical fight with her boyfriend.

Police said the man had bite wounds to his shin, inner thigh, ankle, palm and testicles. He was treated for minor injuries at Washoe Medical Center.

Attacker 'bit off woman's tongue'

Police have launched a UK-wide hunt for a man who attacked three women, in one case biting off his victim's tongue.

The man struck twice in Blackpool, Lancashire, and later in Knutsford, Cheshire, attacking three lone females.

Police warned women everywhere to be on their guard and said the man must be caught "as a matter of urgency".

"The attacks in Blackpool were particularly serious and, in one case, extremely vicious and brutal," said Detective Superintendent Ian Jones.

Struggled free

The first attack happened in the early hours of Friday on Rigby Road in the South Shore area of Blackpool when a man forced his way into a woman's car, then indecently assaulted her.

She managed to push him out and drive to safety.

The second attack happened at 0300 BST when the suspect enticed a woman walking past into his car in Levens Road, off Central Drive, Blackpool.

He seriously sexually assaulted her and bit off her tongue before she struggled free.

Attempted abduction

The third victim was driving on the M6 southbound at 0445 BST when she became aware of a vehicle following her.

After some distance the driver rammed her vehicle at speed in Knutsford town centre, causing her to stop.

Although she managed to run to safety, police are treating the incident as an attempted abduction.

The man is between 30 and 40, with black hair and of a stocky build.

He is wearing a dark top and driving a vehicle believed to be a blue saloon similar to an Escort or an Astra.

The registration number is thought to be similar to J648 WVX.

Man Allegedly Swallows Man's Finger in Bar

Dec 30, 4:53 PM (ET)

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - A man allegedly bit off and swallowed another man's finger during a bar brawl, court officials said Thursday.

Alex Nyarubakora, 39, appeared in court in the town of Chitungwiza, 15 miles south of Harare, on Wednesday charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Isau Janhi said Nyarubakora was arguing with his wife in a bar last week when he became angry at a second man's attempts to intercede.

After the two men began fighting, Nyarubakora is accused of biting off his opponent's finger, chewing and swallowing it. No remains of the finger were found by police at the scene, Janhi said.

Nyarubakora was freed on bail to reappear on court on Jan. 14. He faces the penalty of a fine or imprisonment.

Minnesota Man Bites Off Brother's Finger

Jan 31, 6:40 PM (ET)

WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) - Police say a man lost his cool and bit off a third of his younger brother's finger on Thursday night after a vicious family dispute.

A criminal complaint filed in the case said Jose Juarez, 45, got into a fight with his younger brother, Roy Juarez.

Witnesses said Jose Juarez insulted his brother's daughter, and the fight began. At some point, Jose allegedly bit off a third of his brother's middle finger on his right hand. According to the complaint, police said Jose appeared to be quite drunk.

Jose Juarez on Sunday night acknowledged that he bit his brother and that alcohol was a factor.

"Yeah, I'm not proud to say I did, but it happened so quick," he told KMSP-TV of the Twin Cities. "We were both kind of intoxicated. I didn't sit there chewing or gnawing or anything like this."

Roy Juarez was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital where doctors reattached the piece of finger. It's too early to tell if the operation was successful.

Jose Juarez was charged on Friday with two counts of assault and one count of domestic abuse. He was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is Wednesday.

Father tells police he bit off his son's thumb
April 21, 2002 Posted: 5:42 PM EDT (2142 GMT)

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- A man who told police he bit off his 2-year-old son's thumb, and apparently held it in his mouth for about six hours, was arrested for child abuse and aggravated assault, authorities said Sunday.

Police responding to a 911 call Saturday night found Raymond Jones running on a street naked, said police Sgt. Bill Knight.

Jones, 39, told detectives he had taken several hits of the hallucinogen PCP and had swallowed his son's thumb because he wanted to mix their DNA, Knight said.

However, Jones apparently had the thumb in his mouth rather than swallowing it, and coughed it out while he was being interviewed by police.

The child was found alone, several blocks away at the entrance of the trailer park where they lived.

Doctors were not able to reattach the thumb.

Man Allegedly Bites Off Girlfriend's Nose

Fri Feb 17, 10:10 PM ET

TULSA, Okla. - A family sitting down to dinner had to call police and an ambulance after a man allegedly bit off the nose of his girlfriend, authorities said.

Jody Bennett came out of a back room of a north Tulsa residence on Thursday with a napkin over her face and said her boyfriend, identified as Greg Hill, had bitten her nose.

Medics responding to the house saw that Bennett's nose had been severed and called police.

"We looked around and tried to find a nose but couldn't find it," Cpl. Larry Edwards, a police spokesman, said. "I think he swallowed it."

An ambulance took Bennett, 37, to a local hospital where police talked to emergency room personnel about pumping Hill's stomach to see if the nose was inside, police Cpl. Shane Tuell said.

"They said, given the acid in the stomach, that it would be a futile effort to try and do that," Tuell said.

The nose is made primarily of cartilage and other soft tissues that stomach acid can dissolve quickly.

The couple live in California, and the other people at the house didn't know what led to the assault, Tuell said.

Officers used pepper spray on Hill, 45, after tussling with him as they tried to take him into the custody, Edwards said.

Hill denied biting Bennett's nose, police said.

He was booked into the Tulsa Jail on complaints of aggravated assault and battery, resisting arrest and destroying evidence.

Bennett could receive help from domestic violence groups to recover from her injury if she cooperates with Hill's prosecution should a criminal charge be filed, Tuell said.

The officer was called to Pamela Greenlee's house because she was having a dispute with a man over the sale of a kitten and wanted police to remove him from her home. The officer was trying to restrain her when she bit off part of his right ring finger, police said.

Greenlee, 40, pleaded no contest on Monday to charges of battery to a law enforcement officer.

The finger was not reattached, Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Shomin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped a second misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer in exchange for her serving some prison time. Prosecutors agreed to not recommend a specific term.

Gu Gu the panda is said to have suffered no harm after the event
A drunken Chinese tourist says he bit a panda who attacked him after he jumped into a zoo enclosure to "hug" the bear.
Zhang Xinyan, 35, had drunk four draught beers before deciding to enter the Beijing Zoo pen belonging to six-year-old male panda Gu Gu.

The startled Gu Gu bit both legs of his intruder, who responded by biting "the panda on its back", Mr Zhang was quoted by state media as saying.

Mr Zhang said he had not realised pandas could be violent.

He told the Beijing Morning Post that he had come to the Chinese capital "only to see the pandas".

"The seven-hour train ride was exhausting, and I drank bottles of beer when I arrived then had a nap," he added.

Punishment

The newspaper said Mr Zhang had a "sudden urge" to touch Gu Gu with his hand, so he jumped over the waist-high railing into the enclosure.

No one ever said they would bite people. I just wanted to touch it

Zhang Xinyan

"When he got closer and was undiscovered, he reached out to hug it," the newspaper added.

Mr Zhang was bitten first on his right leg, and then on his left.

Newspaper photographs showed him lying on a hospital bed with blood-soaked bandages over his legs.

"I bit the panda on its back but its fur was too thick," Mr Zhang recalled.

He went on: "No one ever said they would bite people. I just wanted to touch it."

Zoo spokeswoman Ye Mingxia said the panda was unharmed and they were not considering punishing Mr Zhang yet.

"He's suffered quite a bit of a shock," she told the Associated Press by telephone.

Brighton man 'bit off girlfriend's cheek'

1:00pm Monday 23rd April 2012 in News

A man has been accused of biting off his girlfriend’s cheek in a drug-fuelled attack.

The assault is alleged to have taken place in broad daylight in a Brighton park.

Police found the unnamed woman’s cheek discarded in Wild Park  , off Lewes Road, following the horrific incident at 11am on Saturday.

A quick-thinking police officer scooped the cheek up and raced it to hospital.

People in the park, currently occupied by traveller families with children irrelevant, but this is the Argus, witnessed the reported assault.

Doctors on Saturday battled to reattach the woman’s cheek to her face. The woman will now have to wait a week to find out if the cheek has taken or whether she will require further surgery.

Detective Sergeant Mark Rosser said: “A couple and a friend were walking together in Wild Park when a row broke out.

“The man bit off the woman’s cheek.

“He was biting her face and she fell to the ground. A witness saw this and called the police.

“Police arrived immediately and restrained the man who was arrested.

“An officer picked up the cheek and took it to hospital where it was reattached to the woman’s face.”

The officer said it was believed the man had taken LSD, a powerful psychedelic drug.

He added Sussex Police would always work to tackle domestic abuse, urging victims to come forward.

Writer Simon Richards, 29, of Shanklin Road, Brighton, has been charged with grievous bodily harm. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court today.

Witnesses to the assault should call Sussex Police on 101.

By the way, someone has set-up an anti-Argus Twitter account, the Evening Anus, @eveninganus which absolutely destroys the local rag every day. It's genius, like an online teacher just pointing out mistakes all the time.

I know a chap who was attacked in a park about six years ago and had a large part of his ear bitten off. I don't know the ins and outs of it, but the attacker didn't even get a custodial sentence. It's troubling that society seems to have become inured to such regular reports of brutality.

There's nothing new or unusual about humans biting each other. If it were unusual we wouldn't need forensic odontologists.

Many offenders have been convicted on the evidence of their own teethmarks. It is common for sex offenders to bite their victims, for example.

On the other hand, less dramatically but still of interest, burglars have been caught out after leaving teethmarks in their victims' food.

These aren't just cases of plain biting though, are they?
We're into biting major parts off, which may not be unusual in a criminal setting, but is resolutely 'unusual' behaviour for the general population. I'm reasonably confident that a survey asking 'Have you ever bitten off part of another's body or had part of your own body bitten off?' would show it to be a fairly infrequent occurence.

I've seen a lot of it in media reports in Ireland & the UK of late. More frequent than I'd like to imagine.
