Humanity Will Not Last Another 1000 Years

I'm positive there's something in the Bible about it somewhere, but I'm not about to start looking at the moment.

UPDATE

quick search gives me this

Probably the truth of the matter is greedy pastors want all the money people would otherwise spend gambling, so they dig through the bible and come up with passages telling people not to gamble, but instead give their money to the church. Unfortunately, either way the money is lost. Ok, ok, before anyone punches me in the face - I'm sure SOME greedy pastors put some of the money to good use... but I can stereotype, can't I?

Without diverting the thread, that link reminded me of an experience I had a while back. I got a leaflet through the mail from some Christian group with some guidelines on it, including a referenced biblical quote which said something along the lines of "thou shalt not attend wild parties." I checked the reference in a copy of the New Testament, and it actually said "thou shalt not indulge in orgies." Slight difference, methinks.
I also hear the Christian merchandising industry is worth $5bn in the US. Anyone know where this goes?

B. The gub'ment could run the casinos, and filter the house's winnings straight into its accounts, rather than some rich !@#$%'s private account.

Here in UK we have a Notional Lottery, which is supposed to provide funds for all sorts of wonderful charitable purposes. Lots of this money, however, got diverted into building the Millenium Dome, which then went on to waste even more public money. Now the thing is shut, but is still costing money...

New Conspiracy theory: the attack on America was actually engineered by New Labour, so that they could play a leading part in TWAT, thereby diverting the Tories (a party of very little brain) from complaining about the Dome...

I hear ya ... corruption's the one thing you can always count on to rain on your parade. Makes me sad -- that such an awesome space thing and our whole fate is sealed by the greedy f**k*rs. I've been thinking about that -- how would one avoid corruption in a situation like that and I guess I was thinking of it idealistically. <long, drawn-out sigh> (But there are so many things in the world so much better than money -- ah, to be able to view the heavens from the perspective of other worlds, through other atmospheres, maybe even in another solar system one day is priceless and it's ironic that money is the very thing that prevents us from going there).

Hello to all!
I think as far as Sponsoring space colonisation you guys have come up with a pretty good Idea. Do a Lotto with a bigger prize than the UK national, but all the profits going towards the single cause of ...Colonisation of space or at least starting the commercial explotation outside earths orbit. Host it all on the Internet from a location with lax tax laws or even better host it from a server in space? Once people saw a genuine fairly boundary free Lottery the money would pour in and with no restrictions we could really take the worlds hopelessly optomistic to the cleaners. Except it would not be because at least the eventual saving of humanity to me is far better than chipping in for some crap Opera in the London that the John or Jane in the street is not going to ever see even if the enterance is free, because they can not afford the petrol! and the Public Transport is so bad they get there the next day!

The lottery is a damn good idea -- should make it a global lottery, too. It would bring in a lot more money and require a lot less starting capital. <wheels in the grey matter are spinning>

Maybe even a lottery for trips to space when the thing gets going. Hell, I'd pay $200 a ticket for even a remote chance to go to space.
