OK. Though a bit odd that you never found any evidence of caterpillars on the ground?
 
What strikes me as notable in the suggestions about what the object was, is that the suggestions are all of real species. This is the world of Forteana and so I am going to suggest it was a small, flying black shuck. Ridden by a drunken elf. Naked.
