Giant snowballs appear on Russian beach in Siberia
A strange and beautiful sight greeted locals in the Gulf of Ob, in northwest Siberia, after thousands of natural snowballs formed on the beach.
An 11-mile (18km) stretch of coast was covered in the icy spheres.
The sculptural shapes range from the size of a tennis ball to almost 1m (3ft) across.
They result from a rare environmental process where small pieces of ice form, are rolled by wind and water, and end up as giant snowballs.

A large number of ice balls appeared on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Huge ice balls, a somewhat rare phenomenon, spotted rolling on a Lake Michigan beach

Ice balls of various sizes were spotted Sunday on Lake Michigan in Benzie County, just south of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and an Honor resident managed to take some photos and a video of them.

The balls are a somewhat rare phenomenon.

Fortunately, Hal Sorstokke posted his images to some Facebook groups, with a note on one that said there were thousands of them, many in the 8- to 12-inch-size range, but some smaller and others as big as 3 feet.

That would make them in the size range of softballs to beach balls. ...

Monday, Sorstokke, 60, said he'd seen balls like this once or twice before in his life, but never that big before.

The ice balls occasionally roll up on Great Lakes beaches, as well as on beaches in Germany, Russia and Scandinavia. ...

The balls, experts say, form on beaches when weather conditions are just right: The temperatures fall just below freezing along shallow beaches. Slush collects into round shapes and the waves sculpt the ice chunks into orbs. ...
