I'm not sure where else to post this. I bought the base of an Indonesian tree about 25 years ago because, well .. you just do don't you? .. It's beautifully carved, the local artist being sympathetic and working with instead of against the natural grain, lumps and bumps of the base .. I was told to oil the wood when I bought it but I deliberately never have .. I think it's inevitable aging is going to add it's character ...

'Religion, rituals and arts have always been intimately intertwined in Bali. However, prior to 20th century, the purpose of the fine art of wood carving was purely religious.' ...

"A man who works with his hand is a labourer, a man who works with his hand and his brain is a craftsman, but a man who works with his hand, his brain and his heart is an artist".
