It's All In Your Head (Objects Piercing Or Embedded In One's Head)

X-Ray at the link. (I really wish "the voice" would tell more people that they're safe, loved, a child of God/ess, whatever rather than harming themselves or others. )

Oh, like the report they cite at the end, and posted by Emps above, it is also sourced from *that paper*, but I don't see this as being particuraly unbelievable, either.

Russian Man Hammers Nail Into Head After “Hearing Voice”

Created: 08.06.2005 18:12 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 18:22 MSK, 23 hours 12 minutes ago

The resident of a Russian village has hammered a nail into his own head.

While alone at home 37-year-old Yuri Dedov took a hammer and drove a 122-millimeter nail into his forehead all the way down to the nailhead, Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper wrote. When Dedov’s mother came home, she found her son had a fever. Upon seen the nail in his head, she called for an ambulance.

Dedov was taken to hospital and operated on. After the successful operation, he said that he had heard a voice saying “Take a hammer and do it.”

Neurosurgeon Yuri Tanvel, who operated on Dedov, said a piece of iron had almost gone through the latter’s head and stopped near the eyeball. “If its trajectory had been 15 degrees different, he would have died immediately. As it is, no vital function was violated. The main thing is the nail did not reach the brain,” the paper quoted the doctor as saying.

In April, doctors in the Voronezh region pulled a 35 cm knife out of a man’s head who lived to tell the tale. The patient’s friend had plunged the knife into his eye.

Boy Scout survives after knife gets lodged in brain

KTRK

(12/23/05 - KTRK/SALT LAKE CITY, UT) - There was a freak accident in Salt Lake City. A Boy Scout leader saved another scout from falling, but accidentally stabbed him in the brain.

The leader was raking leaves for a Boy Scout event when he tried to catch another scout, Kevin Coulter, who had tripped. But the knife the leader was holding slipped from his hand and stabbed Coulter in the brain.

It was lodged in between his frontal lobes and luckily, it just missed a major blood vessel.

"That's the best spot if you are going to have a knife in your head," said Coulter. "I just felt pressure."

Kevin's been upbeat throughout the accident and his recovery. He even walked away with the knife as a souvenir.

Girl struck in forehead with grilling fork

Associated Press
Dec. 29, 2005 10:30 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - A grilling fork flew off its handle while a boy was playing with it and stuck in his 11-year-old stepsister's forehead, police said.

Megan Butler was listed in critical condition Wednesday in Methodist Hospital, where she was taken by paramedics.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Judy Phillips said the children were playing Wednesday afternoon when the 10-year-old boy began swinging the fork, which had a string attached to its wooden handle.

The two-pronged metal fork came loose from the handle and stuck in the girl's forehead, police said. The girl took a few steps forward, then collapsed, police said.

The boy removed the end of the fork from her forehead and someone else called police. The girl was unconscious when emergency workers arrived. It was not clear how deeply the points penetrated her forehead.

Phillips said the girl's injury was being treated as an accident.

Doctors, spiritualist remove mystery nail from woman’s head… As police link co-wife to her ordeal

By ANDY ASEMOTA, Katsina
Saturday, December 31, 2005

Police in Funtua, Katsina State, have linked a 60-year-old housewife, Rabi, with the misfortune of her co-wife, Adama, now partially paralysed following a six-inch nail, mysteriously driven into her head.

The police say they are working on the suspicion that Rabi – who has since been remanded in prison custody by a Funtua Sharia Court judge - knew about Adama’s travails. But the suspect has vehemently denied any knowledge of what led to her co-wife’s problem.

Hope

However, news of the removal of the nail reportedly seen as a cheery news bringing hope to many that Adama’s worst situation was over.
After the nail was eventually removed, it was learnt, Mrs Ayuba regained her power of speech. Sources revealed that the news of the successful operation was greeted with spontaneous jubilation in Funtua.

Doctors at Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, removed the nail early this week after a revered Maiduguri based spiritualist had allegedly broken the power of the witchcraft behind the tragedy.

A relative of the 40-year-old woman told Saturday Sun on Wednesday that the patient would remain in the hospital for about a month.

The man, who simply identified himself as Lawal, said Mrs Ayuba required extensive medical examination since she was said to have started emitting offensive odour before she was taken to Sokoto.

The six other nails allegedly discovered through x-ray in Adama Ayuba’s head were said to have disappeared as mysteriously as they had found their ways into her head.
Tragedy hit the woman about three weeks ago when she woke up to find a huge nail protruding from her head.

Phone call from Sokoto

Some of her relatives and sympathizers who were at her mother’s house when a phone call from Sokoto confirmed the nail had been removed from Adama’s head were said to have insisted on speaking with her in order to dispel their fears completely.

Her brief conversation with some of them on the phone was reportedly cheered and applauded as her trauma was seen to be ending on a happy note.

The traumatised housewife (Adama) was reportedly taken to Sokoto on the instruction of the Maiduguri-based spiritualist, said to be a relative of the unfortunate woman.

Sources revealed that unorthodox priest stopped over in Funtua by sheer providence, as he was en route to Maiduguri from Sokoto when he met Adama lying unconscious.

Several relatives of Adama who witnessed the drama told Saturday Sun that the man escaped with injuries after his encounter with the alleged evil forces responsible for Adama’s ordeal.

Rabi in court

Rabi was arraigned before a Funtua Sharia Court by the police last week for allegedly using “criminal charms” to nail Adama contrary to sections 217 of Penal Law and 394 of Sharia Penal Code of Katsina State.

But, the mother of 10 children denied the charge. The trial judge, Alhaji Saidu Mani Ingawa, remanded the woman in prison custody pending the fate of the victim and fixed February 7th, 2006 for hearing in the case.

The Court heard that following the allegations of one Adamu Shittu, a nephew of the Adama, the suspect could not but be held liable for the offence.

The complainant reportedly informed the police that shortly after her aunt last quarrelled with Rabi, her temperature shot up. Adama was to have lost her senses and the ability to speak immediately she revealed to her nephew and others that she strongly believed that Adama had seriously charmed her through spiritual means.

The Court was told that the six-inch nail protruding from Adama’s head was discovered after some women in the complainant’s house invited a spiritualist to pray for her.

Mother’s Prayer

The shocked mother of the victim, Hajia Hadiza, told Saturday Sun that she prayed that the law would punish Rabi for allegedly being the “nail” in her daughter’s flesh.

Hadiza lamented that Rabi had made good her threat to tarnish her daughter’s good image and cause her irredeemable damage.

She wondered why at 60 years and with 10 children, the accused person would not allow Adama know peace for once in her husband’s house.

The aged women claimed Rabi was convicted last year after she accused Adama of living with HIV AIDs should not be allowed to escape the wrath of the law.

Recalling Rabi’s penchant for malicious verbal and otherwise attack on Adama, she disclosed that a Funtua Court found Rabi guilty following a medical examination that proved the allegation of Rabi as unfounded.

Suspect better off in custody

A police officer told Saturday Sun that the accused person was safer in prison custody than her husband’s house, as mob action against her could not be ruled out.

“Don’t forget many people sympathising with Adama will stop at nothing to lynch Rab”i, he warned. “Who knows what would have happened, if she had remained in their house since the scandal broke out?”

Man Fails to Remember How 10-cm Nail Got in His Head

Created: 12.04.2006 12:50 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 13:37 MSK

MosNews

A man from the Ufa region in western Russia has survived after discovering a 10-cm nail in his head, in an incident separate from the case of a young girl who had a nail driven into her ear two weeks ago, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported.

The 40-year-old man discovered a metal dowel sticking out of the top of his head while brushing his hair after a party the previous evening. He told doctors that he had been drinking with his friends and so could not remember anything about how the nail had got there. It did not cause him to panic however, despite the fact that few people survive such traumas.

“Head traumas are often accompanied by amnesia — the victim does not remember how he was injured. Or he may not wish to speak of it for personal reasons,” said neurosurgeon Ildus Saitov, who removed the nail from the man’s head.

The doctor said his patient had been very lucky — the dowel had not broken any major blood vessels or the most important parts of the brain, while strong alcoholic intoxication Saitov believes saved him from going into shock from the pain. The patient left hospital only a couple of days after the operation and is now feeling absolutely normal, he said.

In early April a 17-year old girl from the south Russian city of Taganrog also survived, after a man she met in the street and agreed to have tea with kicked a 10-centimeter long nail into her head. The girl not only survived the attack, but managed to walk 3 kilometers to the nearest police station, though she fainted as she came in.

In August 2005 a 37-year-old Russian villager drove the whole length of a 122-millimeter nail into the back of his head after hearing a voice which told him to perform this act of folly. Although the iron rod had almost gone through the man’s head and stopped near the eyeball, he was also successfully operated on.

With an impressive photo - I can't see how you'd overlook that:

And the other report - he kicked a nail into her head????

Doc's diagnosis: Nail gun caused headache

12 nails found in the man's skull, he suffered no lasting effects

Saturday, April 22, 2006; Posted: 9:35 a.m. EDT (13:35 GMT)

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- An Oregon man who went to a hospital complaining of a headache was found to have 12 nails embedded in his skull from a suicide attempt with a nail gun, doctors say.

Surgeons removed the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill, and the man survived with no serious lasting effects, according to a report on the medical oddity in the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery.

The unidentified 33-year-old man was suicidal and high on methamphetamine last year when he fired the nails -- up to 2 inches in length -- into his head one by one.

The nails were not visible when doctors first examined the man in the emergency room of an unidentified Oregon hospital a day later. Doctors were surprised when X-rays revealed six nails clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head. (Watch the X-ray showing the position of a dozen two-inch nails -- 1:43)

The study did not say how long the nails were, and a hospital spokeswoman refused to release that information. A photo published in the study suggests the nails range from 1 1/2 to 2 inches long.

No one before is known to have survived after intentionally firing so many foreign objects into the head, according to the report, written by Dr. G. Alexander West, the neurosurgeon who oversaw the treatment of the patient.

The man at first told doctors he had had a nail gun accident, but later admitted it was a suicide attempt.

The nails came close to major blood vessels and the brain stem but did not pierce them. The patient was in remarkably good condition when he was transferred to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where the nails were removed.

The patient was later transferred to psychiatric care and stayed under court order for nearly a month before leaving against doctors' orders.

Man Fghts to Keep Bullet In Head

Man fights to keep bullet in head

th_90122__42380739_joshua_122_436lo.jpg

A search warrant has been issued in the US for a potentially vital clue to a violent crime - a bullet lodged in a teenager's head.

Texan prosecutors want the bullet, embedded under the skin in 17-year-old Joshua Bush's forehead, to be removed.

They say it could help convict Mr Bush of the attempted murder of a used-car salesman in a row following a robbery.

The case has raised privacy concerns, with Mr Bush's lawyers fighting to have the bullet remain in his head.

In a case seemingly straight out of US television crime series CSI, prosecutors say the 9mm bullet became lodged in the soft fatty tissue in Mr Bush's forehead in a shootout with the car salesman.

Police say Alan Olive returned fire after Mr Bush tried to shoot him.

They say Mr Bush was part of a gang that had tried to take cars from the forecourt.

Identified to police by other gang members, Mr Bush was interviewed.

Mr Olive, a competitive pistol shooter, said a man returned after the police had investigated, threatening to kill him if he gave evidence. The shootout followed.

"I just can't believe I missed him at that distance," Mr Olive says in court papers.

Prosecutor Ramon Rodriguez told Associated Press news agency that Mr Bush "looked like hell. He had a big old knot on his forehead".

Mr Rodriguez said Mr Bush later said he was hit by a stray bullet while on his couch in his flat.

A judge issued a warrant for the bullet's removal in October but a doctor said he did not have the proper tools.

A second operation was ordered for last week at a hospital but that was postponed for unspecified reasons.

Now Mr Bush's lawyers say the removal would be a denial of his civil rights, although the surgery would not be life threatening.

The lawyers base their case on the constitution's protection against unreasonable searches.

Rife Kimler, Mr Bush's lawyer, told AP: "When the medical profession divorces itself from its own responsibility and makes itself an arm of the state, it's a dangerous path."

Woman Has Pencil In Head Removed After 55 Years

Woman has pencil in head removed after 55 years

Mon Aug 6, 2007 10:40AM BST

BERLIN (Reuters) - A 59-year-old German woman has had most of a pencil removed from inside her head after suffering nearly her whole life with the headaches and nosebleeds it caused, Bild newspaper reported on Monday.

Margret Wegner fell over carrying the pencil in her hand when she was four.

"The pencil went right through my skin -- and disappeared into my head," Wegner told the newspaper.

It narrowly missed vital parts of her brain.

At the time no one dared operate, but now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.

The majority of the pencil, some 8 cm (3.1 inches) long, was taken out in an operation at a private Berlin clinic, but the 2 cm tip had grown in so firmly that it was impossible to remove.

X-ray shows knife stuck in skull

A 17-year-old youth has been found guilty of attempted murder after stabbing a boy in the head with a kitchen knife.

The 16-year-old boy was critically injured during a failed street robbery near a bus stop in Walworth, south London, Inner London Crown Court heard.

He was taken to hospital with the knife still stuck in his forehead. Police released an X-ray image of the injury.

The defendant, who denied the charge, will be sentenced later this month.

He had targeted the boy outside Tesco on Old Kent Road last November when friends of the boy tried to stop him.

DNA traces

Three of the intended victim's friends stepped in and were stabbed. One suffered a chest wound and another minor injuries to his shoulder. Both have recovered.

The defendant was seen running away, but dropped his hat and mobile phone at the scene.

Forensic experts identified the attacker from DNA traces left inside the hat and he was arrested at home several days later.

The boy stabbed in the head has since recovered and although he requires regular hospital checks, it is believed he has started college.

"Anyone who carries a knife, risks a heavy jail sentence," said Det Con Scott Albert. "The defendant has affected four lives, including his own."

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also convicted of grievous bodily harm.

How some of them never knew about the objects inside them is a miracle.

Man shoots nail into brain without noticing

A suburban Chicago man accidentally shot a 3.25in (8.25cm) nail into his skull but is recovering after doctors successfully removed it from the centre of his brain.

Dante Autullo, 34, was in his workshop when a nail gun recoiled near his head.
But he had no idea the nail had entered his brain until the next day, when he began feeling nauseous.
Doctors told Mr Autullo that the nail came within millimetres of the area used for motor function.

His fiancee, Gail Glaenzer, told the Associated Press on Friday that he was in good spirits after the two-hour surgery to remove the nail at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois.
"He feels good. He moved all his limbs, he's talking normal, he remembers everything," she said. "It's amazing, a miracle."
Ms Glaenzer said she had no idea the nail had entered his skull when she cleaned a cut on his forehead.

She convinced him to go to the hospital after he felt nauseous for much of Wednesday.
Mr Autullo thought that the nail gun had simply hit his forehead, but realised later that when the gun came in contact with his head, the sensor recognised a flat surface and fired.
While there are pain-sensitive nerves on a person's skull, there are none within the brain itself.

Hospital spokesman Mike Maggio said the part of the skull that was removed for surgery had to be replaced with a titanium mesh amid worries that it might have been contaminated by the nail.

One wonders why the whole brain doesn't short out in such a case? It's supposedly full of densely packed organic electronics. A CPU most certainly would.

it isn't really electrical in precisely the same way, it's all membranes polarised by sodium ions rather than what we traditionally think of as wiring and current.

okay - I didn't know there were different kinds of electricity, I thought any electiricity would travel along a conductor such as a nail. I also thought these brain scans that 'allegedly' identify serial killers or whatever worked by detecting electrical activity in the brain in response to certain stimuli? Or are we really talking chemical activity?

Brain cells are electro-chemical in nature - details here:

Action Potential

I'm not sure it's technically chemical in the sense that there's no actual reaction, closer to mechanical on a very small scale, net movement of ions being the same for this purpose I guess as net movement of charge but not the same as free movement of electrons.

The actual movement of charge is across the membrane from the outside to the inside of the axon rather than along the length of it.

US teen survives spear through brain

A US teenager's survival after a spear was shot through his brain is a miracle, doctors say.

Yasser Lopez, 16, is recovering after he was accidentally hit with a spear gun by a friend during a Florida fishing trip this month.

Medics at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami said the 3ft (90cm) projectile entered his brain over his right eye and went out the back of his head.

He is now out of bed and speaking following a three-hour operation.

Medics said he was awake as he arrived at hospital, and became "agitated".

After sedating the teenager, part of the stainless steel spear had to be severed with a mechanical cutter so he could fit into the CT scanner.

Yasser Lopez's brain scan after surgery to remove the spear
Doctors said the teenager has no memory of the freak accident.

He was shot with the projectile as he swam in a lake near his Miami area home on 8 June when his friend set off the trigger of a spear gun he was loading.

While medics are not sure of the extent of the damage to his memory and other parts of the brain, they say his condition could have been much worse.

"It's a miracle the spear missed all the main blood vessels of the brain," neurosurgeon Ross Bullock told reporters.

Also helpful, doctors say, was the foreign object's trajectory into the right side of the brain, Mr Lopez's non-dominant lobe, missing the parts responsible for speech and other important functions.

Pencil pierced toddler's eye socket and entered brain

The pencil penetrated her right eye socket before lodging 1.5in (3.8cm) into the front lobe of her brain

A two-year-old girl from Bath has made a full recovery after falling on to a pencil that pierced her eye socket and entered her brain.

Wren Bowell was taken to hospital where surgeons operated for four hours to remove the pencil.

Ian Pople, the consultant neurosurgeon who operated on her, said people who suffered similar injuries had died or suffered permanent brain damage.

Surgeons at Frenchay Hospital said Wren had been "extremely lucky".

'Jammed in'
Wren, from Peasedown St John, was getting ready for bed at home when she fell over and landed on the pencil she was carrying.

It narrowly missed her eyeball, before lodging 1.5in (3.8cm) into the front lobe of her brain just a millimetre away from a major blood vessel.

"We had to open up the skull first of all to get inside and then we removed bits of fractured bone to be able to pull out the pencil from the brain," said Mr Bowell.

"The pencil had become jammed in by the fractured bits of bone.

"She is extremely lucky and we are very pleased that she has made such an excellent recovery."

The incident happened in March and Wren was released from hospital in April.

Brazil man survives steel rod through head

A Brazilian construction worker has survived after a 2m (six-foot) steel rod fell from above and pierced his head, doctors who treated him say.
Eduardo Leite was taken to a Rio de Janeiro hospital, where the rod was removed after five hours of surgery.
The doctors said he responded well to surgery, suffered no adverse consequences and has experienced little pain.
He narrowly escaped partial paralysis and loss of an eye, they added.

The rod is said to have fallen from the fifth floor of a building under construction.
It pierced Mr Leite's hard hat, then the back of his skull, before exiting between his eyes.

Luis Alexandre Essinger, chief of staff at the Miguel Couto hospital, said Mr Leite was conscious when he arrived there and explained what had happened to him.
"He was taken to the operating room, his skull was opened, they examined the brain and the surgeon decided to pull the metal bar out from the front in the same direction it entered the brain," he said.
Mr Leite had "few complaints" after the surgery, Mr Essinger added, saying "it really was a miracle" that he survived.

Neurosurgeon Ruy Monteiro told local TV that the bar had entered a part of the brain with no specific major known function.
The victim is expected to stay in hospital for another two weeks, and will be given antibiotics to avoid risk of infection.

Pencil extracted from Afghan man's head
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22699975

A scan revealed the pencil's location so that doctors could operate

German doctors say an Afghan man who for years suffered from headaches, a runny nose and eyesight problems was found to have a 10-centimetre (four-inch) pencil lodged in his head.

Surgeons at Aachen University Hospital removed the pencil and the 24-year-old is reported to be recovering.

The pencil had injured the man's sinuses and right eye socket.

When asked how the pencil had got there he recalled that as a boy he had once fallen and had a serious nosebleed.

The case was presented at a medical conference in Essen on Tuesday by Prof Frank Hoelzle of Aachen University.

The pencil was found only after a detailed medical examination using computer tomography - an image scanning technique, German media report.

'Miracle' recovery for boy after meat skewer goes through head
A 10-year-old boy in Missouri is recovering after he was attacked by wasps and fell from a tree house face-first on to a meat skewer.

The thin spike that went through Xavier Cunningham's head "miraculously" missed his eyes, brain, spinal cord and major blood vessels.

He fell down from a tree house when the freak accident occurred on Saturday.

Kansas University Hospital told local media he is expected to recover fully, although his voice may be affected.

A team of Kansas University doctors successfully removed the square rod - which made for a trickier surgery than a rounded skewer due to the sharp edges - over several hours.

Xavier was playing in a tree house at his home in Harrisonville, Missouri, when yellow jacket wasps began stinging him.

He fell from the tree house and landed directly on a foot-long (30cm) metal meat skewer. The skewer penetrated around six inches into the boys skull.

Xavier's mother Gabrielle Miller told Kansas City Star that she saw her son walk into the house, screaming, with the rod "just sticking out" of his head.

"I'm dying Mom, I can feel it," Mrs Miller recalled him telling her on the way to hospital. ...

His injury had no active bleeding and had avoided his eyes, brainstem, spinal cord and blood vessels, which enabled doctors to call in expert surgeons before attempting the removal surgery on Sunday morning. ...

Koji Ebersole, director of endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Health System, told the Star: "You couldn't draw it up any better. It was one in a million for it to pass 5 or 6 inches through the front of the face to the back and not have hit these things."

He said the biggest concern while removing the rod was the blood vessels in the boy's neck.

Dr Ebersole called the boy's recovery "miraculous".

"I have not seen anything passed to that depth in a situation that was survivable, let alone one where we think the recovery will be near complete if not complete," he told the Star.

Teen survives 10-inch knife lodged in face: 'It could have been the end of me'

When Dr. Koji Ebersole laid eyes on the boy whose face was impaled on a 10-inch knife, the neurosurgeon thought, "here we go again."

Eli Gregg, 15, of Bourbon County, Kansas, is recovering from the freak accident after going home from the hospital on Monday. In a rare occurrence, he's the second boy Ebersole has treated recently for a sharp object piercing the head. ...

The first was 10-year-old Xavier Cunningham. In 2018, he survived a penetrating injury to the head after falling from a treehouse ladder in Missouri and landing on a footlong metal meat skewer. He said he was being attacked by yellowjackets, a type of wasp, before he fell.

"When it happened to Xavier, as soon as we saw the X-ray, my colleague said, 'this is going to go viral,' " said Ebersole, a neurosurgeon at the University of Kansas Health System.

A medical team at the University of Kansas Health System then operated on Xavier and removed the skewer.

"I think going through Xavier's case helped us a lot for this one," Ebersole, who's also an associate professor at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, said of treating Eli.

"At the time of Xavier's case, nothing like that had been seen at our hospital amongst the personnel that were involved," he said. "This is supposed to be once in a career." ...

"Once it started moving, it was out in 10 seconds," Ebersole said.

He added that Eli "didn't suffer any brain injury. No injury to vision. No injury to the movement of the eyes. No strokes. No brain bleeding. Really, he's just got a small little cosmetic incision line, if you will, from the knife on his right cheek. You would never know that he went through all of this." ...

Medical miracle in Jerusalem: Surgery saves man with rod through head

Four weeks ago, Kamel Abdel Rahman, 46, went to visit the apartment he is building for his family. He turned the wrong way and fell from the second floor onto a iron rod that penetrated right through his head.

457544.jpeg

“I couldn’t move, so I called for help - I was shouting,” Rahman recalled. “I was conscious and I did not feel any pain at all. I do not know how to explain it.”

His family members who were with him instantly ran to him and saw what had happened.

“I saw the expression on their faces, the shock, and I heard them screaming,” Rahman continued. “I know the situation must be serious.”

Imaging tests showed that by luck the rod had entered between the two important arteries that supply blood to the brain and did not appear to damage them. The doctors, however, were concerned that there was a rupture they did not see because the rod was blocking it. If the rod was removed and the artery started bleeding it would mean sudden death.

“For many hours, we analyzed the wound, and we took the rod out of his head very carefully,” Dr. Samuel Moscovici said.

“You could certainly say he was the patient that every surgeon dreams about,” Moscovici continued.

457546

Last week, he was released from the hospital.

“I have no words,” Rahman said. “They saved my ability to speak and walk. They saved my life.”

Viral video shows calm man with knife sticking out of his head in Harlem

knife-head-1.jpg

... A Bronx man was stabbed on top of his skull with a cleaver during a brawl in Harlem on Tuesday — and walked it off.

“Sharp”-minded Roberto Perez seemed unfazed by the blade, which left him a bloody mess, according to a widely shared Instagram video of the gory aftermath. ...

The clip shows 36-year-old Perez talking calmly with horrified onlookers and strolling toward an FDNY ambulance as if he had just wandered off a movie set.

He appears not to be aware of his blood-drenched undershirt and the protruding knife.

“He looked like he didn’t even feel it,” said one witness.

Here's a new one ... A New Zealand woman started having significant pain in her nose following a COVID nasal swab test. She eventually had to undergo surgery to remove a tiddlywink that had been lodged in her nose for 37 years.
Tiddlywink stuck up Christchurch woman's nose for 37 years

For most of her life, hospital kitchen worker Mary McCarthy often had a pain on the right side of her nose.

Last year after an extremely painful Covid-19 test, her nasal problems deteriorated.

The reason became obvious on Thursday when a surgeon at Christchurch Hospital extracted a yellow tiddlywinks piece – 37 years after it was lodged in her upper nose as a child.

The surgeon also removed calcified material that had grown around the counter. ...

She said she remembered playing tiddlywinks with her seven brothers and sisters and as an 8-year-old took the game on a tangent by putting one piece up each nostril and “blowing them out to see how they would go”. ...

“One time I accidentally inhaled one instead of blowing it out, and I was a bit too scared to tell my mother, so I didn’t. I remember being terrified at the time, thinking ‘where it has gone’.”

Not one to complain, she put the accident at the back of her mind and carried on with life.

“I always had difficulties breathing through my nose over the years but never gave it much thought.” ...

After a Covid-19 nasal swab test in October she was in pain for days afterwards, and then started developing serious sinus problems. ...

She decided to go private and had booked an appointment to see an ear, nose and throat specialist in August.

But she needed help sooner. On Wednesday she finished work in a lot of pain and went to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department. ...

“Luckily the nurse and doctor believed it was more than sinus pain. They asked me if I had ever put anything up my nose and I told them about the tiddlywink, sort of laughing it off.” ...

A CT scan revealed an object in her upper nose, although it did not look like a tiddlywink. The doctor tried to remove it while she was awake, but it was too big and too painful. ...

In the operation the object was pushed through her nose and extracted through her mouth. The Covid test had dislodged the disc and caused an infection. ...

A Taiwanese woman was "attacked" with chopsticks and treated for her visible injuries. Later investigation led to the discovery of two pieces of broken-off chopsticks embedded in her sinuses. These fragments apparently entered her face and migrated to the sinuses, evading detection during her examination immediately following the attack.
Woman Ends Up With Chopstick Fragments Undetected in Her Sinuses For a Week

A woman in Taiwan unknowingly had two chopstick fragments lodged in her sinuses for a week after a violent fight with her sister, according to a new report.

The 29-year-old woman went to the emergency room after she was "attacked by her sister with plastic-wood chopsticks while at the dinner table," according to the report, published June 24 in The Journal of Emergency Medicine.

The woman said she had experienced a mild nosebleed and swelling in her left eye after the attack. Doctors saw that she had two small cuts under her eye and on her nose. But an X-ray did not show anything unusual. ...

However, one week later, the woman began to suspect that her injury was more serious than it appeared.

She noticed that "some parts of the chopsticks used in the attack were missing" ... And when she looked in the mirror, she thought she could see a gray object in her nose. ...

A doctor then examined the inside of her nose and saw pieces of chopstick penetrating her nasal septum, or the wall dividing the two nasal passages, the report said. A CT scan showed two chopstick pieces in her sinuses, with one embedded more deeply than the other.

The route that the chopsticks followed to enter the woman's skull was the same as the route doctors use when performing surgery on the ethmoid sinuses - which are located between the corner of your eye and the bridge of your nose - to treat sinus infections.

The woman needed surgery to remove the fragments, which were about 1.4 inches (3.5 centimeters) and 2 inches (5 cm) long, respectively, according to the report. She experienced no surgical complications. ...
