Josh Kirby Collection

If only I could win the lottery.

I've said elsewhere that there were three strands that got me started with reading fantasy and science fiction (and then into wargaming and roleplaying):
  • My teacher reading our class The Hobbit when I was 8 to 9-years-old: I was transported and painting miniatures (badly) within the year.
  • Choose-your-own-adventure books from the much-loved school book sales (not actually the Fighting Fantasy ones, strangely).
  • Spotting Josh Kirby's cover artwork for The Colour of Magic on my art teacher's desk at age 11 and being allowed to borrow the book.
I think part of the appeal of Kirby's work is that where some artists prefer to cleverly imply the world beyond the frame, he often seems determined to give you a direct taster of a good deal of it by making his pictures so gloriously bustling; that's part of the reason why they support repeated viewings--there are small pleasures to be found lurking under every flagstone.
