Jumping Off the Face of the Earth (World Jump Day Campaign)

I'm sure this was mentioned in a Mythchasers a while back.

It seems some people weren't reading too closely - as this site here illustrates.

(Link to World Jump Day site now leads to Asian porn site.)

The idea is a mass organised simultaneous jump in order to affect the Earth's trajectory and thus save us all from extinction. Or something.

Honestly...

That is sooo cool!!

However...I do have to question the effects. Can the climate change be guaranteed to be a positive one?? And will it definitely stop global warming??...and how does it do this??

What happens if too many people jump?? Do we end up a larger orbit than planned and how does that effect us??

This is a very tempting plan if possible!!...but what of the consequences??

Wow, think about the changes that could happen in world climate if all these people registered to jump would actually do useful things like recycling and reducing emissions and planting trees, etc.

The earth in comparison to a soccer ball filled with dirt, the mass of all humans combined surely cant be too much larger than a small marble. Lets say you get organized for 1/10'th the population to jump at once (if they could), its not going to move too far. hehe

I believe last year's big tsunami was caused by a plate movement sufficent to alter the earth's rotation or orbit a little bit; think of the forces involved in creating even that tiny bit of wobble.

Reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's story, "Love that Universe!" which suggests that billions of people simultaneously thinking about love could send out enough psychic energy to get the attention of beings in other solar systems. :D

And that reminds me of the Asimov story where a being (thought of as god) comes to earth and gives out 'vibes' of love. Yet when disaster threatens it can't do anything...it just wants love. Thus man dies.

Watashi (moi)? a cynic :D...I'd go with jaded meself.

Wasn't Julian May's concept of unity and 'galactic' intervention based on some form of higher human evolution (psi abilities) and goodness of spirit?

arrrggg...yeah I think so...it's been years since I've read Intervention... Preferred the Exiles series...getting a bit OT now tho, so I'll stop.

All right (I agree with the exiles saga :D ) and back onto Earth movements. I recall the old chestnut about the chinese supposedly contemplating getting a vast percentage of the population to jump in order to do...well..whatever. Trying to work the weight (of human biomass) out logically etc I assume that even a massive co-ordinated jump would need to be, in reality, jumpS plural...and then, the most likely scenario (allowing that this idea has any reality) would be damage to faultlines under the country in question.
