Pics from the new King Arthur movie available here, featuring some cool shots of what's in store. Oh, and Keira Knightley in a... ummm.... nipple strap. Almost forgot about that.
I still like Excalibur as a big, grunting over-the-top Arthur epic, so no idea whether this will come close....

Xena, Trinity and Buffy have a lot to answer for. :p

You can't get more realistic than Richard Harris wandering around singing 'Camelot'...:D

u cant beat Excaliber for me...that image of the knights rideing thro a blosoming orachard penants beating in the wind...

An Arthurian tale set in the post-Roman era? What will they think of next? ;)

If the script matches the pictures it could be quite impressive.

It'll take a lot to beat Exacalibur even though that was a more fantastical approach.

The final battle with Mordred's army in the black monstrous armour, and that twilight last battlefield, made me think at the time what John Borman would have done with LoTR if he had ever raised the finance.

Same goes for me, the imagery of that scene coupled with the music from Carmina Burana, made a huge impression on my 11 or 12 year old mind, the 1st time that I saw it. To this day, I still find it inspiring. One of my all time faves.

Looking good to me :) as long as the film makers don't set it in cornwal but do set it in the borderlands of south east wales (Caer leon is and always has been not far from Cardiff and has been inhabited continuously since arthurs time) then we will know that the film mackers actully did look at the known history of Arthur rather than rely on the English legend too much.

Interestingly Merlin was never a wizard in the oldest known documents (it is not even recorded that he met Arthur as he came from north wales) but he was presented more like a wise old testament profit type who prophesised henrey VII's concouring of England. It sounds like they might be useing that vertion of Merlin for the new film which should prove a much more interesting caractor than 'Dumbledore in battle armour'.

Well, I suppose he might have got to south wales on a trip south from Scotland ;)

Oliver Tobias and Michael Gothard in Arthur of the Britains were er... formative influences for me. So I was actually more used to the mud-and-wattle version than the high chivalric one.... until I met Monty Python and the Holy Grail of course!

Didn't know that about the prophet representation..... very interetsing.

Does anyone have a Handy List of Archetypes Included and the approximate date/order they turn up in?

Well monty python and the holy grail was the best king authur film I saw, the most historicly acurate too as it happens :)

historial acuracy isnt anything to do with anything... Excaliber wa visualy apealing and the twisted story well told. Great armour too al dog faces and spikes... and it wa sexy in a twised sort of how the hell does a knight in full armour do it then sort of way.

So there really was a Castle Anthrax?

Oh yes! 'Excalibur' had a great influence on my young mind too!
The glinting armour, gory battles, landscapes both bleak and beautiful, and a cool, mad, Merlin...
And the soundtrack.
I loved it.

Another 'remake' of the tale will have to be something pretty outstanding, for me.

Snap. I love it. Bought the DVD transfer a while back. Sumptious. Amazingly my good lady manged to sit throught the whole thing which is nothing short of amazing for her. When i expressed suprise at this she said she'd been admiring the horses and was impressed at how well trained they were. Err. ok, at least she watched it...

There's always something cleverer than yourself!

I don't remember ever seeing Excalibur! Right, I'm off down the video shop soon as I have the time to watch it!
What was that dire Arthur film with Sean Connery where everyone wore airforce blue polo necks?
I remember the Arthur of the Britons series when I was a kid that was supposed to be realistic- people living in rough villages in iron age style houses fighting in old Roman armour.
Best Arthur book(s) has to be the Crystal Cave books (not the tv series) by Mary Stewart, I've read all them more times than I could say and never get tired of them.

Its the sort of thing they always dub 'Epic' and 'lavish' and very much in the Mallory rather than historical probable vein. Hope you enjoy it. :)

The casting (rather unfairly) makes me grin sometimes, Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard) And the husband (Mr Bucket) from Keeping up appearances bith make appearances.

You put that thing back in its sheath , I'm not in the mood for anything that involves pulling and rocks! :D

First Knight.

The Python version was far more realistic - in every single respect!

qwerky would describe it...and Lancelot gets bright chrome armour too...

Excalibur had quite a few actors that went on to some fame, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, Helen Mirren, and Gabriel Byrne to name a few.

Did anybody listen to Boorman's commentary on the DVD? He says that he expected that the actor who played Arthur would go on to great things and that he was disappointed that he didn't achieve the fame and recognition that he(Boorman) thought he would. He also said that the entire film was shot 15 minutes from his home.

Boorman also dropped some good gossip about the actor that played Merlin(I forget his name) and Helen Mirren. Seems that they had had an affair while performing a play together the year before the movie was made and didn't like each other at all.

Excalibur: excellent film! Every year or two I watch the DVD, cringeing at some of the less-than-special effects, lusting after Helen Mirren and being bowled over by the scope and images of the movie.

The music! I rarely buy sound track CDs, but I have this one.

Flawed but compelling.

Puts on safety helmet.

I think Excalibur is hilarious.

I've never seen so much chrome in one place before. And the buckets of blood over the top gore are great as well.

I class this film as one to watch provided:

a. It's free

and

b. You've already had a couple of drinks (at least).

Some interesting takes on King Arthur, Mallory would have been mirtified by them though.

Five Films That Creatively Adapt Arthurian Legend

From classic comedies to existential journeys, these movies all put their own spin on the fabled knights of Camelot...

Arthurian legend is made up of a nebulous web of stories, making it ripe for creative adaptations. Retellings can sometimes struggle to find a balance between honoring the original story and doing something new, but that problem doesn’t weigh as heavily on Arthurian legend thanks to its lack of one definitive source.

Sure, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s medieval-era History of the Kings of Britain is the text that popularized much of the lore that we still tell today. But Geoffrey didn’t create all of the mythology surrounding Arthur and and a few iconic aspects of the legends—such as the quest for the Holy Grail—were added later. With that in mind, let’s explore five films in which Arthurian legend has been creatively retold and reimagined…
