Large Snakes

Erk. I never thought of tree climbing snakes. Of course some do, but I prefer to forget that detail. I'm glad that I live where there are MUCH smaller snakes.
It makes me laugh, because the first time I seriously headed out into the Guatemalan jungle, I had heard about the poisonous snakes on the trail (although after a while I relaxed a bit, since about 2 villagers died every year from snake bite, and I figured if the villagers couldn't see them, what chance did I have?). It never occurred to me to look upwards and it was only after a week in the jungle and having got back to civilization that I found out that there were large boas in the forest that dropped down on animals from above.

I find it difficult to vision how the woman was caught by the snake. I am going under the assumption that she was away from home at the time because of the articles' wording and, therefore awake. I know snakes have squeezed people when the person has been sleeping, but how would a person be caught if awake? Is it possible?
Certainly possible, she was taking things to market to sell Strike.... Grab...... Throw a few coils around her and tighten.... Tighten..... Tighten...... The end.... Indonesian women are slim and petite normally.

Just had to look up drop bear. Initially I assumed they were real and wondered why I'd not heard of them lol. Mind you all the same I think I'll add them to my already long list of creatures to worry about should I ever get around to visiting Australia. :)

Me too! I love it.

The python strikes with lightning speed and bites the victim. The rows of needle sharp, backward pointing teeth grip the flesh. Then the python throws it's hugely powerful coils around the victim and tightens them cutting off blood flow to vital organs. The prey is swallowed whole after death.

I really didn't know that pythons strike:omg:. And them being such large snakes, I didn't think they would move that quickly. I knew they squeezed and devoured their prey whole.

New nightmare fodder.

Hmmm….. A lot of these historic newspaper stories have to be taken not with a pinch of salt but a large bucket. I’d put them in a similar bag to our current tabloids as regards sensationalism/factual accuracy.

A 69 foot ‘porpoise snake' made of ‘kegs with bungholes’ containing 588 gallons of oil? That’s 8½ gallons per foot.

It probably sold a few extra copies, which is the name of the game.

Obviously that sounds like something very sensational. Numerous newspapers used to publish these types of stories and even competed in the size of the "monsters" described. The post is for informational purposes and clearly does not imply that I accept these facts as true. In my opinion they only provide data to compare with other more credible stories.

Not many proplr would actively seek out and rescue a python i that manner.

A snake thought to be an escaped pet has been found by a member of the public at a reservoir in Nottinghamshire.

The royal python was first spotted at King's Mill Reservoir, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, at about 19:00 BST on Saturday.

Gemma Savage, who lives Kirkby-in-Ashfield, said she searched for the snake after seeing a post about it on social media and found it on Sunday afternoon. It was later taken to the Mansfield Aquatic, Reptile & Pet Centre, where it is now being cared for.

Ms Savage said: "I saw the post on Saturday and all I could think about was that the snake would not survive if it stayed outside, so I went to find it."

She added: "I was comparing the photo from social media while we walked around the reservoir to try and find the location. I looked in the grass and saw that it was curled up in a ball. We touched it with our foot to make sure it was still alive and to make sure it wasn’t nasty."

She said she then picked it up and it was later taken to the pet centre in Nursery Street, Mansfield.
