Snake Bites

Australian teenager bitten by most venomous snake

The Inland Taipan has the most potent venom of all snakes

Police in Australia are investigating how a teenager near Sydney came to be bitten by the world's most venomous snake.

The 17-year-old boy was bitten on the hand by an Inland Taipan snake, which usually lives in desert areas.

The boy is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being given anti-venom.

A drop of Inland Taipan venom is enough to kill 100 people and causes paralysis.

The snake is also more commonly known as the fierce snake, because of the venom's strength rather than the reptile's temperament.

"Police are now attempting to establish how the youth came to be bitten, and hope to speak to the young man once he is considered well enough," New South Wales police said in a statement.

Officials at Mater hospital in Newcastle City, where the boy is being treated, said that the anti-venom was crucial to his survival.

"We had anti-venom in stock, we keep what's called polyvalent anti-venom and that covers all of our snakes," toxicologist Geoff Isbister told ABC News.

The Inland Taipan, described as shy and reclusive, can grow up to two metres long.

It is usually found in Australia's Northern Territory and Queensland, hundreds of miles away from the town of Kurri Kurri, on the coast to the north of Sydney, where the incident happened on Wednesday.

The police do not believe that the incident was related to a break-in at the nearby Hunter Valley Zoo on Sunday that saw the theft of four pythons and two alligators, the police statement added.

Judith Martin, from Hunter Reptile Rescue service, which handled the snake, told the BBC that it would be sent to a reptile breeding programme.

Diary of a snakebite death ..

He was bitten by a deadly snake in the late 50's, the only anti venom was on another continent ..

Instead doing what anyone else would do like crying or panicking, he went home made some supper and recorded the diary of his last hours of life read out in this video .. the handwriting is strangely tidy for a man at deaths door, it makes me think someone re-wrote it in tidier hand writing after his death.

This snake lost out.

The mother of a 17 month-old boy was shocked and scared when her son ran home with blood in his mouth and on his hands and a dead snake whose venom easily kills. It turned out that the toddler managed to kill the deadly viper with a bite while he was playing in the garden.

The incident took place in the town of Mostardas in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil on Sunday.

I didn't know the bite of a brown snake could be so bad.
My friend told me about her friend who was bitten by one in a remote area. He had to drive himself to hospital.
The venom has affected his blood and he has been in and out of hospital and lost parts of his bowel.
I had never heard of side effects like that.

A man has been bitten by a python after trying to take a selfie with the creature.

It happened in India's northwestern Rajasthan state after forest department officials removed the snake from a school.

They were holding the python and posing for pictures after successfully capturing it.

A man then moved in closer for a selfie and was attacked by the snake, which lunged forward and bit him on the shoulder.

The snake was then taken away, and the man only suffered minor injuries, according to India Today.

Image captionRattlesnakes can continue to bite hours after dying
A Texan required 26 doses of anti-venom after he was bitten by the severed head of a rattlesnake he had killed.

Jennifer Sutcliffe told local station KIII-TV that her husband was working in the garden when he saw the four-foot (1.25m) rattlesnake and decapitated it.

When he picked up the snake's remains to dispose of them, the head bit him.

A snake's bite reflex can be triggered up to several hours after it has died. Ms Sutcliffe told KIII-TV her husband immediately began to have seizures.

Reptiles because of their metabolism have low blood pressures and low oxygen levels, meaning their nervous tissue is very tough. So a decapitated snake can live for up to an hour after decapitation fully aware of what's happened :(

I think this film review fits here.

Them That Follow: A bleak story set in Appalachia among adherents of a snake-handling Pentecostal Church. Mara (Alice Englert) is the pastor's (Walter Goggins) daughter, she retains her faith but is being pressured into marrying a loyal member of the congregation, Garrett. She is secretly pregnant by Auggie who has drifted away from the church. The members of the sect are literally dirt poor and steeped in ignorance and prejudice. It is an insular society with people watching each other's behaviour and being judgmental. The outside world intrudes when a boy dies after being bitten by a snake. The police arrest Auggie. Mara faces a dilemma regarding the choices facing her.

Not the most original of plots but the faith of the congregation is vividly portrayed as they worship in their corrugated iron roofed assembly hall or in an open air natural amphitheatre in the woods. The snakes seem peaceful as they entwine together in their nests among the forest rocks but we see how deadly they can become. Handling the snakes is an article of faith and the church members believe that bites can be cured through prayer. Indeed the pastor casts out all sorts of ailments. Some great acting by Englert, Olivia Coleman as Auggie's devout mother and Kaitlyn Dever as Daisy, Mara's friend who may be overly pious or just might have a streak of Iago in her. Goggins looks and acts as if he is channeling Jack Nicholson from the wider scenes of The Shining. In some ways reminiscent of Winter Bone but in this case the locals are high on religion rather than hillbilly heroin. Written and Directed by Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage. 7/10.

Isn't Appalachia the are where they do that strange dance. Rather like they were trying to avoid snakes.

A fatal encounter.

A man has died in Tasmania after being bitten several times by a tiger snake.

Winston Fish, 79, was bitten “at least five times on his leg and on his hand” while mustering sheep on his farm at Oatlands, north of Hobart, his brother, Brian Fish, told the ABC. A friend went to look for Fish when he was late coming home and found him with the reptile still wound around his arm.

“The only thing we can surmise is that he fell on the snake and got tangled up from that,” his brother said. “But there was no one there who can tell us what happened. Once [his friend] got the snake off [him] the doctor was there,” his brother said, but there was “no antivenom at the hospital in Oatlands”.

Paramedics tried to treat Fish at the scene before flying him to Royal Hobart hospital by helicopter. He remained in hospital for two days before passing away on Thursday.

“It’s something you see in a horror movie,” his brother said. “It just doesn’t happen.”

Snakes are fascinating. Been bitten by numerous non-venomous snakes and pissed on as well. Our local northeastern water snake is a heavy bodied snake, growing > 5'. By far and away the biggest snake in NYS. They give a nasty bite if improperly handled. Had one take out a chunk of skin years ago.

Good: You go backpacking in the Grand Canyon.
Bad: You get bit by a rattlesnake.
Good: You get airlifted to safety and get a shot of antivenom.
Bad: The antivenom is created from a horse and you're allergic to horses

/ Good: The horse contains no potassium benzoate

l remember reading years ago that in Britain, more people died from allergic reactions to antivenin than did from the adder bite itself. Accordingly, treatment today is observation and rest rather than shots.

Without quoting the entire article, here is the relevant part:

"All anti-venoms are made from antibodies from animals. There are several different types. Redmond took the anti-venom that's created from a horse, which is what she's allergic to. "To get really sick on this is almost unheard of," said Dr. Frank LoVecchio, a toxicologist who works in the Valley.

Dr. LoVecchio said this is so rare because all hospital-use anti-venoms usually don't have a trace of the animal it came from. "In an ideal world, the amount of animal proteins you get is extremely small almost negligible," sad Dr. LoVecchio. "But when you have bad allergies or potential allergic reactions then these things can happen."

Redmond was rushed to Phoenix after she went into anaphylactic shock, and it could have been deadly. She recovered in three days after she said she received a different anti-venom, this one came from a sheep.

Thank you! It's a very interesting story. Luckily there was another treatment available or she'd have died.

Another snake in a loo story, this time in Malaysia (also could be a Fortean Headline):

10ft snake pulled from toilet after biting man’s bum

snake.png

A ten-foot snake was removed from a toilet by firefighters after it proved to be a pain in the bottom.

The slinky creature was making himself right at home in a toilet in Malaysia before the fire department was beckoned to come to take it away. Seven firefighters were sent to the home in Gelang Patah, an outskirt of Iskandar Puteri.

The huge slider was only discovered after he had bitten the resident of the house on the bum, a rather rude way to enter someone’s house, if you ask our opinion.

Snake bites man. Man bites snake in retaliation. This gives snake the opportunity to bite man many more times. Man dies.
Drunk Man Dies After Biting Venomous Baby Snake in Apparent Revenge Attack

According to the Times of India, Rama Mahto, 65, captured and bit a baby viper in retaliation for an earlier attack outside his home in the village of Madhodeh in the Nalanda district of Bihar.

Mahto, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, was sitting out the front of his house on Sunday when the baby snake reportedly bit him on the leg.

He eventually managed to capture the viper and, in a surprising twist, decided to enact his own unique form of vengeance on the animal, reported India TV.

In a statement issued to police and reported by the news outlet, Mahto's family said he was "bitten more than 10 times" on the face while chewing the snake.

He eventually discarded the reptile in a nearby tree.

Despite his family urging him to go to the hospital and seek treatment, "he refused and went to sleep" believing the snake's bite carried no venom due to its age.

Mahto went to bed and was found dead on Monday morning. The official cause of death has not yet been recorded. ...

Snake bites man, man bites wife

Patna: A man bitten by a venomous snake in Bihar bit his wife in the wrist as his last wish was to die together.

The woman was saved by a doctor although the man died.

The incident took place in Samastipur district, some 90km north of Patna, on Saturday.

As per reports, Shankar Rai, a resident of Birsingpur village in the district, was asleep in his home on Saturday night when a deadly snake bit him. When he woke up in the morning, he found his condition worsening and suddenly turned emotional.

Apparently realising that he won’t survive for long, he came rushing to his wife Amiri Devi and bit her hands saying he loved her very much and wanted to die together. Both fell unconscious soon, witnesses said.

Immediately they were rushed to a local government hospital where the man died soon after being admitted there. However, the woman was saved by the doctors due to timely medication.

“The woman could be saved as her treatment began on time. She is safe now,” a local medical practitioner Dr Jaykant told the local media on Monday.

According to the victim’s wife, her husband sank his teeth into her wrist wishing to die together and remain united even in death but his last wish remained unfulfilled.

“He told me he loved me too much and want to die together before grabbing my wrist and sinking his teeth into it. I allowed him to do so,” the woman told the media. ...

Here's a similar item from Turkey. A snake bit a 2-year-old girl, and the girl retaliated by biting the snake to death.
Toddler Bites Snake to Death after It Sunk Its Fangs into Her Lip

A 2-year-old girl responded to a snake biting her on the lip by biting it back in return, killing the reptile.

The toddler, who is from the village of Kantar, near Bingol, Turkey, was bitten on August 10. According to media reports, her neighbors heard her screaming as the snake attacked her in her backyard.

When they reached her, they found her with a bite mark on her lip, and a 20-inch snake between her teeth. The snake later died from the toddler's revenge bite, while the 2-year-old was taken to Bingol Maternity and Children's Hospital to treat her injuries. After 24 hours under observation, she was recovering well. ...

The species of snake involved in the incident is unknown. Of the 45 species of snake found in Turkey, 12 are venomous. However, as the little girl isn't seriously unwell, it's likely that she was luckily bitten by a non-venomous species. ...
