Lightning Strikes

You would have thought that the lightning would have found a route with less resistance by going through the metal lamppost.

You would, I have seen a lamppost hit, it was in the middle of a big
square left a hole about 3 ft deep and started a fire. but you would
think they would be prime targets.

Pretty unlucky? I'd say it's about as unlucky as you can get.

3 siblings injured by lightning strike while taking a group selfie sheltering under a tree near Hampton Court.

"The family were told it was possible that a titanium plate in Isobel's arm following a cycling accident last year might have been what led to the lightning surging through their bodies."

Isobel sounds like she attracts bad luck!

A security camera caught the horrifying moment a lightning bolt killed a man and injured three others who had been hiding under a tree in India during a rainstorm.

The tragic strike occurred March 12 at the Signature Villas apartment complex in Gurgaon, a city in the northern Indian state of Haryana, where the four men were part of the horticulture staff, NDTV reported.

Footage shows them hunkered down by the tree right as the lightning strikes. Three of them collapse immediately, while the fourth, who is leaning against the tree, falls a second later.

One of the men was hospitalized with severe burns. The other two are reportedly out of danger, according to the news outlet.

Bizarre!

That's bad luck.

A British man has died after lightning reportedly struck while he was paddleboarding in the sea off Greece.

Scott Seddon, from Liverpool, was taking part in water sports off Agia Agathi on Rhodes when a strike hit on Tuesday, according to local reports. A Greek newspaper said his girlfriend was filming him from the beach at the time.

The Foreign Office said it was supporting his family and was in contact with local authorities.

It is not yet known if Mr Seddon was struck directly.

20th August 1975: 2 brothers grin with their hair standing on end… just moments before terrifying disaster strikes

Michael McQuilken, 18, and his little brother Sean, 12, would never have imagined what would happen next after noticing their hair had gone static.

The siblings were climbing Moro Rock In California’s Sequoia National Park and were completely unaware that they were about to be struck by lightning.

Michael recalled feeling the sensation of being lifted off the ground for several seconds, while Sean was knocked unconscious.

He suffered third degree burns and burns and had smoke coming off his back and elbows.

“I found myself on the ground with the others,” Michael recalled. “Sean was collapsed and huddled on his knees. Smoke was pouring from his back.”

Miraculously, both of the boys survived, but the same couldn't be said for a nearby hiker, Lawrence Brady, who was also struck.

Another man, nearer the top of the rock, was also hit. He lived but the camera he was trying to document the storm with was blown to pieces.

Serious question- once you feel your hair standing on end is there action you can take to avoid being struck, such as legging it ( can lightning hit a moving "target"?)

a) once you feel your hair standing on end is there action you can take to avoid being struck,

b) ( can lightning hit a moving "target"?)

a) Yes: The current advice is to lie prone, arms and legs extended, making yourself the smallest possible target.

b) Also yes.

In all cases, avoidance is the best option: Check the weather forecast.

Shocking news from Bangladesh.

On the day he thought he'd be celebrating his wedding, Mamun buried 16 of his relatives.

They had been killed by lightning on the way to the ceremony. Dressed in their finest saris and suits, his family members boarded a boat to join Mamun, when a heavy storm struck. As the rain lashed down the boat pulled over and they took shelter under a tin shed on the riverbank, when they were hit.

Bangladesh, which is blighted by extreme weather and heavy storms, suffers an average of 300 deaths by lightning every year, according to the UN. That's compared with fewer than 20 annually in the United States, which has almost double the population.

It's a heavy burden for the South Asian nation, and for many like Mamun, who is speaking for the first time about what happened on that day in August 2021. The 21-year-old was getting ready at his in-laws' home in the Shibganj area in the country's north-west, when he heard the crackle of thunder, minutes before he got the gut-wrenching news. ...
