Living history: The man who lives in 1946

Ben Sansum is 35. But he lives in 1946.
His clothes, his house, the music he listens to - all come from an era before he was even born.

He has always been interested the 1940s, but it is an interest that has grown over the years. He's gone from buying reproduction furniture for his house to tracking down the real thing. His 70-year-old carpet is his latest pride and joy.

BBC News went to meet Ben at home in Cambridgeshire.

I love his suit and hat! :D

She added that her way of living hasn't affected her social life: 'Even though I live in "1939", I still have a good social life and enjoy a beer or a glass of whiskey while listening to Al Boley, Glenn Miller, Max Miller, George Formby etc..

I know someone nearly that obsessed but he's very happily married to his own wartime woman.

I thought wartime woman was more of a "What happens in the trenches, stays in the trenches" kind of thing.

I have no idea at all why someone would deliberately choose that lifestyle.
I suppose the only upside would be saving money by not buying appliances and other modern luxuries.

Some people just feel comfortable living in other eras. People who marry their furniture or make love to walls do it I suspect for the attention.

This British couple has gone to great lengths to conduct their married domestic life in a 1930s manner. Immersive historical re-enactment? Full-time cosplay? You decide!
Young couple prefers to live in the past — with a 1930s lifestyle

One young couple has taken vintage shopping to an extreme.

British couple Ruth Shelley, 28, and her partner, Robert Oestmann, 27, have sworn off modern-day amenities. Well, most of them, anyway.

The young couple has reverted back to 1930s pastimes, technology and fashion. Shelley and Oestmann own a vintage car and wear vintage clothing and decorated their home to match their 1930s aesthetic. They also do not watch TV and instead listen to wartime music on a gramophone.

Their favorite recipe: A depression-era meatloaf made with tomato soup.

The couple has credited their lifestyle to benefitting their relationship, allowing the two to be “present in the moment as opposed to glued to Netflix or on our phones” they told Caters News Agency. ...

This 23-year-old UK fellow has gone to great lengths to turn his home into a 1990s time capsule.
'I live like it's the 90s - home is a time warp and I use cassette tapes and Nokia phone'

Jack Walters, 23, lives in a 90s time capsule as an ode to his favourite decade - and he doesn't mind if people think his way of life is weird ...

A lad who is so obsessed with the 90s that he's transformed his home into a time warp says people think he's "mad" for not living in present-day.

Jack Walters, 23, hunts around charity shops for bargains that fit in with his 90s style - donning high waisted Levi jeans and and Sweater Shop jumpers.

Overall, Jack reckons he's spent £5,000 decking out his house with old Ikea furniture, VHS players, and telephone alarm clocks.

Jack's love of the 90s comes from his aim of recreating the "cosiness" of his mum and dad's house from when he was a kid. ...

Jack admits he has to have a few modern appliances in the house, which he shares with his mum and dad, and partner Matthew, 28.

"[Mum] has a modern television. We also have a modern dishwasher and washing machine, but I'd say that's about it." ...

Hmm, he doesn't remember the 90's very well, never saw any man wearing high waisted Jean's, 501's with turn-ups were the fashion I remember most, CDs were very common, sonys 'discman' came out in 1984, hoodies were first big in the 90's and black ash furniture was still popular, by the look of the decor in his house it looks more 50's
Edited to add, if he is 23, he would have been born in 1998 and as a child growing up his folks house would be in the 2000's surely

Wasn't there an episode of South Park where a man from 1995 was discovered after being in suspended animation for 5 years ? He went on chat shows where people laughed at his taste in music and slightly bigger cell phone. I think he was eventually released in Des Moines where he could blend in.

Hmm, he doesn't remember the 90's very well, never saw any man wearing high waisted Jean's,
His jeans look more like those worn by the band Bros in 1987?

But I agree with these words of his:

"In the 1990s, we had enough technology to keep us entertained, but not enough to feel like an overload. Now we have so many different media outlets that it can get a little overwhelming. It's nice to have an escape from that."

I used to be a professional landscaper. On "off" days (where there was machinery work to do that I wasn't qualified for as I was a grunt) the boss would have me go to his mother's house and do some general landscaping which meant mowing the lawn especially around her award winning garden.

This woman was the "grandmother of the neighborhood". The type that would bake cookies for every kid on the block, just because she could. I'm sure on any hot day, she'd be outside with fresh made lemonade for anyone who wanted some. I'd been inside her house and I can honestly say that nothing had changed since the 1950's. Specifically her kitchen. It really was like taking a trip back through time anytime I found myself in there.

In fact, it's the same elderly woman I mentioned in this post: https://forums.forteana.org/index.php?threads/wasps.35714/post-1532145

Edit: And, apparently I told the same story here: https://forums.forteana.org/index.p...-have-considered-but-didnt.67508/post-2005243

I haven't got a 'man cave' but I do have a retro corner in our large(ish) dining room dedicated to the 80's and a little bit of 90's so I've got an analogue TV set that I can only use to work my Playstation 1 and VHS player, loads of games for that and a couple of hundred ex rental tapes (mostly 80's horror), posters, a few Star Wars vintage toys, vintage film posters .. that sort of stuff.

This woman has assembled a wardrobe of Victorian-style clothing which she wears, and she intends to transform any home she eventually owns into a Victorian simulacrum.
Woman who dresses as real-life Victorian is mistaken for a princess by strangers

Alessandra Casiraghi, 33, from Watford, has been dressing like she lives in the Victorian era for more than five years, prompting passers-by to ask her if she's a real life "princess"

An 1800s-obsessed woman who even dresses like a true Victorian says people have asked her if she's a real-life "princess".

Alessandra Casiraghi, 33, first discovered her passion for the old-fashioned when she was a teenager in high school.

But the photographer and marketing agency researcher only fully converted to dressing like she lives in the Victorian era when she moved to the UK from Italy five years ago.

Now Alessandra, who lives in Watford, Hertfordshire, has 30 gowns true to the period and a wardrobe of countless other garments which she makes herself in order to look more authentic. ...

With her entire wardrobe inspired by 19th century fashion, Alessandra goes to the shops, cinema and even work dressed as a Victorian, but says her boyfriend still dresses in normal clothes.

Over the years, Alessandra has collected a number of antique items from the time and eventually hopes to convert her first house into a completely authentic Victorian-style home, when she purchases.

As well as her day job, the passionate period style-icon does historical re-enactments for museums and events where she tells people about the positives and negatives of life back then. ...
