A dog stolen during a home invasion 8 years ago has been reunited with his original owners.
Family reunited with dog 8 years after home invasion

An Ohio family whose dog was taken during a 2012 home invasion was reunited with their beloved pet eight years later.

Julia Nemeth of Barberton said she never stopped searching for her beloved dog, Junior, after he was taken in 2012, but there were no solid leads until mid-December of this year, when she spotted a dog on the Humane Society of Summit County's website that strongly resembled her long-lost pet. ...

The dog, dubbed Buddy by rescuers, had come to the HSSC as a surrender in July 2018. Staff said he had been adopted three times since he came to the shelter, but was returned each time.

Shelter officials compared Buddy to Nemeth's photos of Junior and agreed that he might be the same dog. Nemeth visited the shelter and the dog immediately reacted to his former owner, licking her face and complying with the hand signals she had taught him as a puppy. ...

A friend of mine had her dog stolen in a burglary about 6 years ago, and then it was taken into a vets up near Oldham for treatment for something 18 months ago, and the vet did a scan of the embedded microchip which alerted a system that the dog was stolen!
She was reunited with the dog a couple of weeks later.
The dog went absolutely bonkers upon seeing her again!

You have to wonder about the dog. A friend was broken into years ago and lost his stereo, computer, etc. He had a wonderful husky. The thief was caught and in his statement said that the dog was lovely and if he could have pointed to the computer he would have done it.

Ring found on Australian beach 13 years after being lost in ocean

An Australian man's custom-made gold ring was found by a metal detector hobbyist 13 years after it was accidentally thrown into the ocean.

Justin Ocenasek, a firefighter with the Metropolitan Fire Service in Adelaide, South Australia, said he was throwing a ball with friends at Henley Beach in 2007 when his hand-forged gold graduation ring flew off his finger and into the ocean. ...

"The odds of me finding this ring were even less than winning the lottery," Ocenasek told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. "In no way did I think I was ever going to find it. I couldn't imagine a scenario where it would be found." ...

Ocenasek was shocked to receive an email from Bruce Phillips, who said he found the ring while using his metal detector in the sand at Henley Beach. ...

Phillips visited Ocenasek's fire station to return the ring in person. ...

Ocenasek said the ring will be kept in a safe from now on so the precious item won't end up lost again. ...

New Hampshire couple reunited with lost cat after 7 years

A New Hampshire couple whose cat went missing in 2013 were reunited with their pet seven years later when he was brought to an animal shelter.

Nancy and Dave Bryant, of Rochester, said the feline, Benny, came into their home in 2011 when a friend's daughter had to find a new home for her cat because she was serving in the military. ...

The couple said Benny was an affectionate cat, but he wandered outside one day in 2013 and never returned. ...

Benny was found by a member of the public earlier in December and brought to a veterinarian in Portsmouth as a stray. The veterinarian determined the cat to be in good health and sent him to the New Hampshire SPCA's shelter in Stratham.

The shelter scanned Benny for a microchip, but the information on the chip was that of his original owner, who is still in the military. Shelter staff made a few phone calls and eventually ended up in touch with the Bryants, who visited the SPCA for a reunion. ...

The couple said they don't know if Benny was on the loose for seven years or if he spent time at another home. They said he is now setting in at home -- with a new name.

"He's not Benny anymore. We just looked at him and said he's St. Nick, he's our little Christmas miracle, especially after 2020," Dave Bryant said.

The eagle-eyed and persistent owner of a stolen 1969 Chevy Camaro finally found and recovered his car 17 years after it was stolen. It was in better operational condition than it had been at the time of the theft, but he couldn't abide the new paint job.
Virginia man finds stolen 1969 Camaro after 17 years

A Virginia man whose 1969 Camaro was stolen 17 years ago was reunited with the vehicle after spotting it in a garage while helping a friend buy another vehicle.

Tommy Cook said the Hugger Orange Camaro was stolen from his auto repair lot in Woodbridge in 2003, and after reporting it stolen he kept renewing the vehicle's missing status with Prince William County police through the mail in the ensuing years. ...

Cook said he had no leads until 17 years later, when a friend considering the purchase of a 1968 Camaro asked him to take a look at a vehicle listed for sale online by a Maryland man near La Plata.

Cook said he arrived at the auto shop to look at the 1968 Camaro, but his attention was grabbed by a hoodless 1969 Camaro in the corner of the garage.

The man told Cook the green car had originally been painted Hugger Orange, the color of his stolen car. Cook said he took a look at the dashboard VIN and thought it seemed suspicious, so he checked the VIN in another spot under the hood -- and it matched his missing car. ...

Cook said the car has received some upgrades since he last owned it -- including an engine being installed in the formerly-engineless vehicle. He said the car had apparently changed hands four times since it was stolen in 2003.

"Some people had put money into it," Cook said. "It was better than it was when it was stolen, but it's still an ugly green." ...

Some drunk guys stole the sword from a Massachusetts town's commemorative statue 40 years ago. The one who kept the sword has returned it and apologized.
Remorseful man returns statue’s stolen sword after 40 years

A veteran returned a sword he stole from a statue of a Revolutionary War general 40 years ago, telling the head of the Massachusetts town’s historical commission that he regretted taking it.

Cindy P. Gaylord, the chair of Westfield’s Historical Commission, said a man contacted the city hall saying he had the sword stolen from the town’s statue of Gen. William Shepard in 1980 ...

Gaylord agreed to give the man anonymity if he returned the bronze sword and arranged for him and his wife to drop it off at her home, she said.

“He had a great deal of shame and remorse,” Gaylord told the newspaper. “ ... He wants the story printed to remind people that something you do in your youth could haunt you for the rest of your life.” ...

The man, who Gaylord described as a “great big bear of a guy,” told her he had worked at a bar in the town while he was enrolled as a student at Westfield State University. After a night of drinking, he and a group of friends went to steal the sword, which he said he wrenched loose with just his own strength. When they realized what they had done the next morning, they were not sure how to return the sword without facing consequences. ...

A cat presumed dead for 3 years has turned up again ...
Missing cat turns up 3 years after California disaster

A pet cat believed killed along with her owner in a huge mudslide has been found three years later.

The Animal Shelter Assistance Program in Santa Barbara County says the calico named Patches was brought in as a stray last month and a microchip scan revealed her identity.

Patches had been missing since Jan. 9, 2018, when a rainstorm on the vast burn scar of the Thomas Fire sent a debris-laden torrent crashing down through hillside neighborhoods of Montecito, northwest of Los Angeles.

Twenty-three people were killed, including cat owner Josie Gower. The devastation of the debris flow was so terrible that the bodies of two victims were never found. ...

The ASAP shelter says Patches was found less than a quarter-mile from where her Montecito home stood.

She was reunited with Gower’s partner, Norm Borgatello, on New Year’s Eve. ...

Cat reunited with Ontario family after 10 years

An Ontario family was reunited with their long-lost cat 10 years after the feline wandered away from their home and never returned.

Julie Jackson Sinclair said her family never expected to see Cuddly the cat again after he vanished from their Elmira-area home about 10 years ago. ...

"When you're on a farm, you never know when they're indoor/outdoor cats whether the coyotes were around or whether he had gotten run over," Sinclair told the Waterloo Chronicle. "So we just assumed he was gone and never returned."

Sinclair said she was initially confused when the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth contacted her to say they had her cat, as the family had since gotten another cat and she knew the animal's location.

The Humane Society sent her a photo of the cat bearing the microchip with her information and she was shocked to see it was Cuddly. ...

Lost (or at least misdirected): This Minnesota woman's cherished wedding dress.
Found: Some other bride's dress.
Complicating Factor: The Minnesota woman worked at the company that supposedly preserved her dress back in 2006. I wonder if we'll ever know whether she was the one who caused this mix-up.
Woman discovers 14 years after wedding that she has the wrong dress

A Minnesota woman who had her wedding dress packaged for preservation 14 years ago said she opened up the box to show it to her daughter -- and discovered it was the wrong gown.

Wendie Taylor said she was watching a wedding episode of TV series Gilmore Girls with her 12-year-old daughter, McKayla, when she started telling the girl about her own wedding dress. ...

"After the episode, McKayla and I were talking and said, 'You've never actually seen my dress.' And she said, 'No, I haven't I've just seen pictures'" ...

Taylor said she opened the box that she received after taking her dress to Evans Garment Restoration, where she worked at the time in 2006, but was shocked to see the dress inside was not her own.

"It's a beautiful dress. It's not my dress," she said.

Evans Garment Restoration has since changed ownership and installed a new software system, so employees have not yet been able to find the records that might lead to the other person involved in the dress mix-up.

Taylor posted a photo of the mystery dress, as well as photos of her own dress from her wedding, to Facebook in the hopes of finding the dress' owner -- and hopefully getting her own garment back.

Tip: Double-check the pockets in clothing you're donating ...
$10,140 found in donated clothes returned to owner

A city worker sorting through donated clothes in Taiwan came across about $10,140 cash that had been stored in red envelopes and placed in the pockets of a clothing item.

The Taichung Nantung District Environmental Protection Bureau said Huang Chi-lung, 28, a member of the bureau's Cleanup Team, was sorting through bags of donated clothes at a collection site in the city when he found the cash and notified his supervisor. ...

Officials took the bag that contained the money to a local police station, where officers found receipts and other documents that identified the owner.

The owner, a 72-year-old woman, said her husband had gathered the clothes to be donated without realizing one of the items contained the envelopes of money she had been saving for retirement and a wedding gift for her daughter.

The Environmental Protection Bureau said {... the woman ...} brought the Cleanup Team a basket of apples to show her gratitude for the return of her money.

This class ring lost and found story also involves a coincidence - once the finders located the ring's owner they were surprised to realize they'd been acquainted with him years before.
Lost and found class ring reconnects old friends across the country

A California couple's discovery of a New Hampshire class ring on a beach led to their unexpectedly reconnecting with an old friend who turned out to be the ring's owner.

Karen Brazas of Channel Islands Beach, Calif., said her husband, Joe, found the Portsmouth High School Class of 1962 ring while using his metal detector on a beach. ...

The initials inscribed in the ring, "B.W.S.," led to Wanda Fontaine, of Eliot, Maine, becoming involved in the search. She initially believed it may have belonged to her late mother, but after discovering it could not have been her ring, she decided to help the Brazas couple in their search.

Fontaine looked through her parents' records of their high school years and identified a classmate, Bruce Wesley Singleton, as the possible owner of the ring.

Singleton, 76, said he knew his ring was missing, but he didn't know when or where it was lost. The story became even more incredible when Karen and Joe Brazas realized they already knew Singleton -- their children used to attend school together in California, and Karen Brazas served in the PTA with Singleton's wife.

"It stretches the imagination, but there's no doubt in my mind that that's my ring," Singleton told Seacoastonline.com. ...

This may be the month's weirdest Lost & Found story ... A 91-year-old California man was reunited with the wallet he'd lost ...

San Diego man reunited with wallet lost in Antarctica 53 years ago

Navy meteorologist Paul Grisham, 91, spent a year monitoring weather conditions on the frigid continent he calls ‘The Ice’

... In October 1967, Navy meteorologist Paul Grisham shipped out to Antarctica, where he worked as a weather forecaster for a science station and airport on Ross Island. Thirteen months later, he returned to his family in sunny California, but his wallet never left.

On Saturday, the now 91-year-old Grisham was reunited with his long-lost billfold, which was found behind a locker during the demolition of a building at McMurdo Station, the southernmost town on Earth.

Inside the recovered wallet was Grisham’s Navy ID, his driver’s license, a tax withholding statement, a recipe for homemade Kahlua and several items other so-called “ice rats” who worked at the station might recognize. There was a beer ration punch card, receipts for money orders sent to his wife for his poker winnings at the station, and a pocket reference card with instructions for what to do in the event of an atomic, biological or chemical weapons attack. There was never any cash, as there was nothing to buy at the station. ...

18th century Gibbet cage found in Honington in 1926 .. Normal For Norfolk

agibbet001.jpg

'
During the building of D Hangar, construction workers found the remains of an old gibbet complete with the skeleton of a murderer!
It was discovered that the old squadron nine site was previously the home of ‘Gibbet Covert’ – a place where executions took place in the 18th century.
The remains belonged to John Nichols, 59, still wearing his boots! He and son Nathan,19, had been convicted of the murder of John’s daughter (Nathan’s sister) and both were hanged in 1794. John’s corpse was displayed in the gibbet as both evidence that justice had been done, and as a grisly deterrent to others.
Their victim had been bludgeoned with a hedge-stake and strangled in the nearby village of Fakenham Magna.
No-one knows what prompted the murder, but father and son went to the gallows accusing each other.
You can see the gibbet cage today (minus the skeleton) hanging in Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St. Edmunds.'

It took almost 50 years, but this woman will have her original wedding ring back in time for Valentine's Day.
Long-lost wedding ring headed back to owner's finger after 48 years

A woman who lost her wedding ring nearly 50 years ago in Chicago will soon be reunited with the long-lost item thanks to the story of a person who more recently lost his ring.

Karen Autenrieth said she lost her wedding ring in the snow in 1973, while she was helping her three kids, ages 2, 3 and 4, get into the car. ...

"It was very cold and the snow plows had plowed the snow up onto the curbs," Autenrieth told the Chicago Tribune. "I had parked my car in front of my grandmother's house and I was climbing over mounds of snow, helping each kid get into the car. My hands were cold -- I didn't have mittens on -- and my ring just flew into the snow."

Autenrieth eventually gave up the search, but the ring was found eight years ago by a woman who was gardening at her home ...

The woman who found the ring detailed the discovery recently in the comments under a Chicago man's Facebook post about his own wedding ring ...

The comment thread came to the attention of the Ridge Historical Society, which offered to help the woman find the owner of the ring.

The researchers used the ring's inscription, "RA to K.B. 4-16-66," to begin their search, and they were eventually able to find Autenrieth's maiden name -- Karen Berk ...

Carol Flynn, a researcher at Ridge Historical Society, found Autenrieth on Facebook and sent her a message.

"I sent her this really enthusiastic, completely disjointed message at 2:30 in the morning," Flynn said. "I went to bed thinking, 'She's probably going to think some crazy lady is trolling her.'"

Karen responded that the ring was indeed hers, and she is still married to her husband, Robert -- the "RA" from the ring's inscription.

The ring is now on its way to San Antonio, Texas, where Autenrieth said her husband will place the ring back on her finger during a family gathering on Valentine's Day.

This missing goat led to a young Colorado woman recovering her high school letter jacket ...
High school letter jacket lost in 2013 flood returned to Colorado woman

A Colorado woman whose childhood home was lost in a 2013 flood was reunited with her high school letter jacket years later when it was found by a woman searching for her missing goat.

... Emily McMurtrey of Berthoud was wandering her rented property a few miles from Lyons in search of her runaway goat when she found the badly damaged Lyons Middle Senior High letter jacket. ...

McMurtrey, suspecting the jacket had been lost in the 2013 flood, turned the jacket over to the school district in the hopes of finding its owner.

District officials said the letters "a-i-m-e" were still visible on the jacket, and those combined with the pins and athletic track patches helped them identify the owner as Jaime Weber.

Weber said the jacket had been in her parents' home when the 2013 flood caused it to be swallowed by a creek.

The district said it is now planning to issue Weber a new jacket with all of the same patches and pins.

Runaway cat reunited with family after 14 years in Britain

A British family whose cat escaped through an open bathroom window have been reunited with their beloved pet 14 years later.

Mandy Prior, 51, said her family's cat, Taz, escaped through a bathroom window 14 years ago when her family lived in Parkstone, Dorset, England. ...

Prior said the family searched for Taz, and even continued to put up posters after moving to Branksome, Dorset, but eventually they lost hope of ever seeing Taz again. ...

Prior said she was shocked when she was cruising Facebook recently and spotted a familiar feline face on a page for lost and found pets.

"I noticed he had the same markings and something just told me that it was him," Prior said.

Prior learned that Taz had been found wandering the area near her family's old home, and neighbors said they had been putting food out for the stray cat for several years.

Resident Chris Ward noticed recently that the feline looked unwell and brought the cat to Hilary Ford, who works with Cats Protection and is friends with the owner of Paula's Cat Rescue.

Taz went into the care of Paula's Cat Rescue while receiving treatment for dehydration and a mouth infection from some rotten teeth. Ford posted a photo of Taz to Facebook, where it was seen by Prior.

Taz underwent surgery for the mouth infection and went home to live with Prior and her family this month. ...

Towards the end of the last century it was - I was gifted with a 1935-built South Bend machinist's lathe, complete but all in pieces, from a friend of a friend who had just bought himself a nice new Maximat. I cleaned about 20lbs of accumulated guck out of it - I think it had seen wartime service - re-assembled it and fired her up, and she ran as sweetly as a new lathe - but the drive from the countershaft to the headstock was by old-style flat leather belt, which was held together with a few twisted bits of copper wire.

Not good, I thought to myself - I really need proper leather belt joiners, but where on Earth am I going to find an item like that? - they probably haven't been manufactured in the last fifty or sixty years, so scarcely something I might find in even a well-stocked hardware store.

I was living on a small island off the Canadian west coast at the time, and garbage disposal was very much a do-it-yourself affair. A few days after I'd re-assembled the lathe, I was at the local landfill site to drop off a consignment of garbage, so I took a look around - I'd fairly often picked up useful odds and ends there - and there, right in front of my feet was - a box of leather belt joiners. Now, what are the odds of making a find like that? - someone had disposed of a rather exotic item, right when I needed it, and at the exact time I needed it, and in a place where I was virtually certain to find it . . . . It boggled my mind, I can tell you!

When my Dad was an apprentice pattern-maker just after WWII, he had to work on a massive lathe that was for turning up patterns for cannon barrels. The lathe was powered by huge leather belts that went up to the next floor. To change gear, he had to use a long pole to move the leather belt across from one spindle to another... all while it was running. He told me that on one occasion, the belt joiners gave way and the belt whipped about, narrowly missing him. They had to get in someone to fix it, as they had no spare leather onsite.

Dog found stuck down well in snow 43 days after he vanished from home 20 miles away

From Michigan.

The Springer Spaniel, named Milo, was reunited with his owners more than six weeks after he vanished in sub-zero temperatures

By the time he was found he had lost more than 2.5 stone and survived in the freezing cold for days.

At some point on his excursion the dog fell into the well at an old grain elevator, and got himself stuck.

neighbours heard him barking for several days, and eventually went to investigate.

Realising there was a trapped dog down the well, they called animal control officers from nearby Kent County Animal Shelter, who were able to fish him out.

A rope had to be looped around him by stunned rescuers to get him out.

Staff wrote: "We do know he survived frigid temps, snow storms, hunger and dehydration.
