Lost & Found

This Liberian teenager found and returned $50,000 someone had lost alongside a road. He was rewarded for returning the money, but he was also mocked and even threatened for it, too.
Liberian teen hailed hero after finding, returning $50,000

A teenager in Liberia has become a national hero after finding $50,000 on the road and returning it to its rightful owner in the northeastern Nimba County.

Eighteen-year-old Emmanuel Tuloe told The Associated Press Thursday that he was driving his motorcycle taxi on a highway when he saw a bunch of money wrapped in a plastic bag that had dropped unnoticed.

When he saw the money on Tuesday, he said “I was afraid because it was plenty; and so I brought it home and gave it to my aunty to keep until the owner could ask for it.”

That day, Musu Yancy, the businesswoman who had lost the money, went on the radio “crying for her money and appealing to anyone finding it,” he said. So he took it to her.

Tuloe said that while many Liberians are praising his actions, others including some friends, are mocking him for doing what is unusual in the post-war country. ...

He had dropped out of school in the seventh grade to begin a taxi service with his motorcycle to make money, he said.

“Since my decision, when I have a breakdown on the highway and some of my rider friends see me, they don’t help; they say I acted stupid to find and return money. I should let the money help me,” he told the AP from his hometown of Gbolor Dialla on the border with Ivory Coast.

“They tell me I will never get rich in my lifetime; they say because I returned such an amount of money I will live and die poor.”

He said he’s also received threats for his actions. ...

Yancy rewarded the boy with cash and materials valuing about $1,500, he said.

A drawing by an 'old master', has been found in a attic.

"A drawing by a great Italian artist of the 18th Century is to go under the hammer after it was found in a loft.

The work by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was uncovered at Weston Hall, near Towcester, Northamptonshire, ahead of the manor house being put up for sale.

Henrietta Sitwell, whose family owned Weston for 300 years, said it was one of many "exciting discoveries".

Auctioneers Dreweatts said it was "probably the most important find" at the house and could fetch £250,000."

This actually attracted some discussion in an art forum I belong to. Hoi polloi that I am, I wrote in that the figures in the drawing looked like garden gnomes. They really do! Really!!!

Ring lost for 39 years found in Minnesota lake by 7-year-old

... The object turned out to be a 1982 class ring from McClusky High School in McClusky, N.D. The engravings on the ring indicated its owner was a basketball player.

The Rose family got in touch with Cheryl Helm, Kerry's widow, who told them her late husband had lost his ring during a graduation party by the lake 39 years earlier.

The head of an Italian marble statue stolen from a Canadian cemetery in the 1990s has mysteriously re-surfaced.
Cemetery statue's missing head returned after more than two decades

The head of an Italian marble statue in a New Brunswick cemetery was left next to the monument more than two decades after it was stolen.

Jennie Steeves died at age 15 in 1900, and her mother had an Italian marble statue erected in her honor at the family's plot in Gray's Island Cemetery in Hillsborough in 1930. ...

The statue was subject to numerous acts of vandalism in the ensuing decades, and in the 1990s, the head disappeared, family members said.

Kathleen Wallace, whose father was the nephew of Steeve's mother, said the statue had long been the subject of local superstitions.

"There were all kinds of stories told about the monument -- that it was haunted, that the eyes had rubies in them -- but none of that is true," Wallace told CBC News. "It was just put there for the family plot and especially in memory of Jennie." ...

Wallace said she was shocked when she saw a recent Facebook photo of the statue. ...

"It showed the statue with the head beside it, that the head had been returned," she said.

The cemetery's keeper brought the head to Wallace's home for safekeeping.

Wallace and her sister, Patricia, said a relative of the person who created the statue has offered to restore it to its original condition. ...

Officials said the book was returned anonymously, and the library does not have records of the Carnegie Library's check-out history available, so the tome's whereabouts for the past 110 years are likely to remain a mystery. ...

Found in a Candy Tin: One of the First Coins Struck in Colonial North America

A silver coin minted in colonial Boston in 1652 has sold for $351,912. The one shilling coin is one of just 40 of its kind known to survive today.

mortoneden_rare_shilling_coin_3.jpg

“I am not surprised at the amount of interest this exceptional coin attracted,” says James Morton, a coin specialist. “The price paid ... reflects its extraordinary historic significance and outstanding original state of preservation.”

Morton and Eden sold the coin on behalf of Wentworth “Wenty” Beaumont, a descendant of early New England settler William Wentworth. Beaumont’s father recently discovered the artifact in a candy tin containing hundreds of old coins at the family’s estate in Northumberland, England.

“I can only assume that the shilling was brought back from America years ago by one of my forebears,” says Beaumont.

Prior to 1652, New England settlers used coins from various European countries, along with wampum made from shells, as currency. Though English authorities had banned the creation of colonial coinage, the Massachusetts General Court defied this order by commissioning silversmith John Hull and his assistant Robert Sanderson to produce the first coins struck in North America in 1652.

Purchased by an anonymous bidder from the United States, the coin features a simple design with the initials NE (for New England) on one side and the Roman numeral XII (its value in pence) on the other. The newly discovered example is the only one of its kind certified as “mint state” by a coin grading service.

Stolen bronze goose that disappeared from St. Paul park is found

A metal recycling center saved the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department from a wild goose chase for a bronze bird statue stolen from a fountain in Cochran Park.

About 24 hours after one of the fountain's four goose castings was reported missing Sunday, a recycling center employee called St. Paul police saying someone attempted to turn the sculpture in as scrap metal.

The bird is back in the possession of the parks department. St. Paul police said Monday they have not arrested anybody in connection with the fowl play.

The quartet of metal geese — each 28 inches tall with a 19-inch wingspan — surround a bronze sculpture called "Indian Hunter and His Dog" created by famed St. Paul artist Paul Manship in 1926.

The city originally installed the sculpture in the Summit Avenue park but moved it to Como Park after it was vandalized, according to a parks department's website. A replica was built for Cochran Park.

But after vandalism problems continued, the city moved the original sculpture back to Cochran Park in 1996. ...

Sipocz estimated the book would have amassed about $3,800 in late fees at the 15-cents-per-day rate the library charged until the 1990s, but the fine would have been capped at the $5 cost of the book. He said the library would not attempt to claim any fines for the tome, as the facility is doing away with late fees on Jan. 1.

Sipocz said the book will likely be given a new barcode and go back into circulation.

Class ring lost in rental car in 2012 found by vehicle's new owner

A class ring lost in a rental car in 2012 was returned to its owner after the car's new owner found it between the seats of the vehicle.

Pennsylvania resident Katelyn Manigly said she was looking between the seats of her car for a missing key fob when she found a class of 1980 ring from the College of William & Mary ...

"My family bought the car many years ago, but I didn't find the ring until I dropped a fob and moved around all the seats in the car. It just tumbled out," Mangily said ...

Mangily said the ring sat on a shelf in her home for a few months before she examined it closely and was able to make out "Bruce W. P." engraved inside the band. ...

It turned out that Patterson, who traveled frequently for business in 2012, lost the ring in a Hertz rental car in the Southeast or Midwest. The car was later in a severe accident and ended up at a refurbishment company, where it was purchased by Manigly's aunt, before the older woman then sold the car to Manigly. ...
