M. R. James

Speaking of William Hope Hodgson, in the 1970s there was an ITV series titled The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes and one of the stories was The Horse of the Invisible by William Hope Hodgson. I saw a repeat of it many years later while I was still a kid and that story scared the cr*p out of me. A few years ago I stumbled across it again but on DVD and wondered if it still held up. I'm pleased to say that it's still an effective story but it didn't scare me as an adult, it was though still a good production.

They just don't make them like that any more ......... everything these days is too bland, generic, 'designed by committee' and 'safe'.

But I digress, this is off topic for an M.R. James thread. :)

I've the two-DVD set of The Rivals ...
John Thaw as an Edwardian Danish cop, the great Donald Pleasence as Carnaki, Peter Vaughan as the untrustworthy Dorrington.
Sure - not all as paranormal as Carnaki ... but a corking good series!

Hodgson on the small screen?

Wow.

Says she who has limited experience with horror and doesnt rate it much.
