Magpies are bad luck. See one and you must salute or spit or both and say Mornin' Captain! (Even if its afternoon?)

Ok.

Here's where I come unstuck:

1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for a girl, for a boy...etc,

When I see two magpies my brain implodes. If I do the magic ritual that dispels the bad luck am I cancelling out one magpie and leaving one, with its attendant sorrow?? And if I say it twice am I cancelling them both out and missing out on the joy I might otherwise have had if I'd kept my superstitious mouth shut?

These birds should come with a manual (as many a northern man has said in his time.)

Well; it's only one magpie that's bad luck (hence, 'one for sorrow'), so it's only if you see one on it's own you need to spit/salute/whatever :)
