MIAMI -- As the victim of a gruesome attack in Miami continued to fight for his life late Sunday, horrific details emerged of the scene that confronted police a day earlier as they arrived to find one naked man eating another's face.

Saturday's daylight attack beside a Miami freeway led to police shooting dead the suspect, who continued to bite at his victim's face even after he was wounded by officers, The Miami Herald reported.

The victim is in critical condition in the hospital and neither man has been identified.

A witness told Sunday of yelling for the attacker to get off his victim, before police arrived and repeated the demand.

As an officer drew his gun and called for an end to the disgusting attack, "the guy just stood ... with pieces of flesh in his mouth and he growled," Larry Vega told WSVN-TV.

He said the scene after the assailant was shot several times and fell alongside his disfigured victim was "one of the most gruesome things I've ever seen in my life."

It remains unclear why the attacker pounced on his victim, who police theorized might have been homeless and laying down when the crazed man began the assault.

It was also unclear how both men came to be naked, but police said the attacker might have been suffering from "cocaine psychosis," a drug-induced craze that makes a person very hot, according to the Herald.

The incident happened around 2:00pm local time on the side of the MacArthur Causeway off-ramp, near Biscayne Boulevard and just south of The Miami Herald building, the newspaper reported.

According to police sources, a road ranger saw a naked man chewing and biting another man's face and shouted on his loud speaker for the attacker to back away.

The man refused police orders, which led an officer to fire one shot. When the naked man continued his gruesome attack after being wounded, the officer shot and killed him. A witnesses said as many as six shots were fired. Police requested surveillance video from the Herald's building, the newspaper reported.

Javier Ortiz, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police in Miami, said the officer who fired the fatal shots was "a hero."

The incident came as thousands of people descended on South Beach for the annual Urban Beach Week hip-hop festival.

I must admit, that was what sprung to mind, when I read the details. A horrible situation. Can't help but wonder if the zombie scenario was running through the cops mind when he shot the attacker, rather than tasering him, or beating him off with his night-stick.

Probably just too much angel-dust, or crystal meth. Hopefully.

I couldn't help but think zombie apocalypse as well, though perhaps it is something else equally supernatural. Ever heard of windigo psychosis? Yes, it is pretty much exclusive to the Algonquin Indians way up North, but the idea of cannibal spirits is fairly widespread. Maybe theres some sort of analogous phenomena at work here. Whatever triggered it caused him to... well... eat someone else's face.

Rudy Eugene Identified As Naked Miami Man Who Chewed Victim's Face (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The naked man who was fatally shot by Miami Police Saturday as he chewed another man's face has been identified, according to Local 10.

Rudy Eugene, 31, of North Miami Beach was shot multiple times during the grisly assault on the Downtown exit ramp of the busy MacArthur Causeway. The Miami Herald reports he had been arrested 8 times since the age of 16, including a battery charge which was later dropped and 4 instances involving marijuana.

"I wouldn't say he had [a] mental problem but he always felt like people was against him type of attitude," ex-wife Jenny Ductant told Local 10, saying the marriage ended when Eugene became increasingly violent. "No one was for him, everyone was against him."

A neighbor said Eugene's former home had been foreclosed on in 2011, and homeless people living in the area of the attack said he was frequently spotted wandering the area, looking confused.

An eyewitness who was riding his bike on the causeway Saturday afternoon said he flagged down a police officer after coming across Eugene, stark naked, chewing another man's face.

"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Larry Vega told WSVN. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

But Vega said when the police officer yelled at Eugene to back away, the naked man merely raised his head "with pieces of flesh in his mouth," growled, and began chewing again.

The officer reportedly then shot Eugene once, but Eugene still continued to attack the man's face, prompting the officer to shoot multiple times until he was dead. The shooting and its aftermath were captured on surveillance video from the Miami Herald's parking garage, but police are still trying to piece together details and are asking witnesses to come forward.

The identity of Eugene's victim, believed to be a homeless man, has not been released. He is reportedly in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"Seventy-five to 80 percent of his face was missing," Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police Aguilar told NBC Miami. "He was actually swallowing pieces of the man's face."

Police say Eugene may have been suffering from a drug-induced psychosis which causes the body to heat up, prompting some users to remove their clothes in an effort to cool down, the Herald reported.

Aguilar says authorities have seen several such cases of delirium in which people have taken off their clothes, seemingly displayed superhuman strength, and have used their jaws as weapons. One such assault allegedly occurred after the Ultra Music Festival in March when a naked reveler Evan Oberfelder attacked a good samaritan and first responders after being hit by a taxi. 14 police officers were treated for blood exposure or injuries after managing to subdue Oberfelder.

“We have seen, already, three or four cases that are exactly like this where some people have admitted taking LSD and it’s no different than cocaine psychosis,” Aguilar told CBS.

This constant reference to 'LSD'? Maybe they're flashing back to the horror movie, Blue Sunshine? If it is 'bath salts', that would be something along the lines of a designer drug, like mephedrone, more like an amphetamine, or cocaine.

Police arrested Natasha Hubbard for aggravated assault after she allegedly snatched a baby boy from his stroller.
Police arrested a 36-year-old homeless woman for allegedly snatching a baby boy from his stroller and slamming him into a pole, then trying to break his arm off so she could eat it, authorities said Wednesday.

Adriana Miranda was walking with her sister in downtown Los Angeles during the July 21 incident, pushing her 4-month-old son down the street when Natasha Hubbard allegedly reached into the stroller, unbelted the baby and grabbed him by the leg, swinging him overhead before slamming him into a rail, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The boy’s mother and aunt tried to fight Hubbard off, and when Miranda was finally able to grab the baby back Hubbard scratched at her and kept trying to fight.

The baby received only minor injuries and was treated for bruises and scratches.

According to the Times, Hubbard ran away but witnesses helped identify her, leading to her arrest. She was charged with aggravated assault and her bail set at $30,000. She is currently on probation for both a narcotics case and a battery case, and has been arrested for aggravated assault before.

In an interview with detectives, Hubbard confirmed she tried to break the baby’s arm off in order to eat it.

The horrific face-eating arrest in Miami and several other seemingly subhuman acts has many people wondering what's behind this flesh-munching wave of terror.

A zombie apocalypse, however, is not what we should be worried about, at least according to the federal government.

Over the years the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a couple of tongue-in-cheek "zombie warnings," which really are just disaster-preparedness stunts. But on Thursday, the agency made it official: Zombies don't exist.

"CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms)," wrote agency spokesman David Daigle in an email to The Huffington Post.

Nevertheless, recent incidents in which humans reportedly ate human flesh have the Internet in a firestorm, with "zombie apocalypse" being Google's third most popular search term by Friday morning.

The zombie craze seemed to start with an attack in Miami on Saturday, when Rudy Eugene, 31, was killed by cops while in the process of eating almost the entirety of a homeless man's face off. The victim, Ronald Poppo, miraculously survived, but doctors are having a hard time figuring out how to put his face back together.

Then, on Tuesday, 21-year-old Alexander Kinyua of Maryland allegedly admitted to dismembering his roommate and then eating his heart and brain.

Cops in Canada are also searching for a low-budget porn actor who allegedly killed a young man with an ice pick, dismembered the body and then raped and ate flesh from the corpse. Luka Rocco Magnotta is being hunted after he allegedly mailed some of the body parts to Ottawa. He's also accused of killing cats on video and posting the footage online.

Gawker fingered a "mysterious rash" breakout at a high school in Hollywood and other parts of Florida -- which hazmat and disease control teams still can't explain -- as further proof that zombies are taking over.

Zombie-like characteristics have been confirmed in the animal kingdom, just not in humans. A newfound fungus in a Brazilian rain forest -- called Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani -- is known to infect an ant, take over its brain so as to move the body to a good location for growth, and then kill the insect.

Yet Daigle dismissed "fictional viruses" like Ataxic Neurodegenrative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome, noting that other triggers have been alleged to cause zombie-like symptoms.

"Films have included radiation as well as mutations of existing conditions such as prions, mad-cow disease, measles, and rabies," he said.

But recently, some have found truth stranger than fiction.

"Action must be taken now before an outbreak!" an anonymous reader told The Huffington Post. "Zombies may be subdued by destroying the brain or removing the head. It is now your responsibility to prevent the apocalypse."

A word of advice. when the riots happened last year, Amazon recorded a 500% increase in the sales of £15 baseball bats. This just goes to show how unprepared most people are for the forthcoming Zombie Apocalypse. Any hardware shop has pickaxe handles that are half the price but more importantly, have nearly twice the reach.
 
The thing is, the pickaxe handles break eventually. Metal baseball bats last forever, are easier to swing and much easier to clean.
Better than a cricket bat too, despite the weight differential.

Even better - a sharpened up ice hockey stick.

Bring on the zombie apocalypse! I know where the sports equipment store is... :)
 
But say you were backed up in an alley and the zombie hoardes are closing in. Propped against the wall, that long pick-axe handle could give you a boost to a ledge you wouldn't be able to reach with a bat.

A homeless man (65) who was the victim of a gruesome face-eating attack in Miami is temporarily blind but recovering well after suffering devastating injuries to nearly half of his face, doctors said.

Hospital officials released two pictures of Ronald Poppo, who remains in the hospital in stable condition after the horrific Memorial Day weekend attack on the off-ramp of a bridge in downtown Miami.

One picture showed his face covered in scabs and missing most of his nose and both of his eyebrows and his eyes covered - one with gauze and the other with a skin flap. In a second picture, he is seen walking with help from hospital staff.

"He's had quite a bit of surgery," said Dr Nicholas Namias, a trauma surgeon at Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital. "He's feeling well. He's eating. He's walking around."

Police are investigating the attack that involved Rudy Eugene (31), who was found naked and chewing on Mr Poppo's face. Police shot and killed Eugene when he failed to respond to orders to stop attacking the man.

Police have speculated that Eugene may have been under the influence of a synthetic stimulant known as bath salts, which the US Drug Enforcement Administration has linked to side effects ranging from impaired perception of reality to agitation and delusional behaviour.

When Mr Poppo arrived at the hospital, "you couldn't really make out his identity or what his facial features were," said Dr Wrood Kassira, a University of Miami plastic surgeon on the medical team treating him. Even now, she said, "when he smiles, it's hard to see who he really is."

The attack has left Mr Poppo blind in at least one eye and facing the risk of losing his vision permanently, the doctors said. His "left eye was essentially destroyed and needed to be removed," said Dr Kassira. "We're hoping that in the future there may be some hope of some kind of vision but it's unclear if he'll recover any of it."

Mr Poppo also suffered a brain injury in the attack. It did not result in any permanent damage but suggested the brutal nature of the incident. "It's the sort of thing we see in car crashes usually," Dr Namias said.

Mr Poppo was treated for two puncture wounds in his chest that doctors said could have been from a bullet but were unable to determine what caused them. Since his arrival, the victim has undergone at least three surgeries and is expected to require more. In one operation, doctors removed skin from his forehead and scalp area to cover one of his eyes.

However, Dr Namias said Mr Poppo was coping well with his injuries and had only briefly brought up the attack in a nighttime conversation with nurses. "He's really just sort of living in the moment and wants to talk about routine things," he said. "He's very upbeat. He hasn't said one thing negative to me."

College-educated and a New York native, Mr Poppo has lived on the streets of Miami for years. No family members have visited him since he was hospitalised, Dr Namias added.

He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few more weeks. Where he is moved after his treatment will depend on his medical needs, the doctors said. A fund set up by the Jackson Memorial Foundation to help Mr Poppo with his medical costs has raised about $15,000 (€11,974). He is also expected to qualify for Medicaid and Medicare, hospital officials said.

Police were alerted after neighbours reported that Pamela McCarthy was punching and choking her son in a violent frenzy.

The police have said that McCarthy was 'violently combative' as they arrived at the scene, growling at them and attempting to bite one of the officers. After attempts to subdue her with pepper spray had no effect, the 35 year-old mother from Munnsville, New York, USA, was tasered and handcuffed. She went into cardiac arrest after being taken into custody and later died in hospital.

A further report confirmed she also attempted to strangle her own dog. An eyewitness told WSYR local news website: 'She was rolling around on the ground with her legs wrapped around it – she was strangling the dog.'

McCarthy's son was taken by ambulance to hospital in Syracuse to be treated for minor injuries. Jason Williams, McCarthy's boyfriend who rushed to the safety of the three-year-old later confirmed his partner had a history of drug abuse.

'Bath salts', a synthetic amphetamine are believed to be behind a recent outbreak of horrifying attacks across the USA. Last month, Rudy Eugene was shot dead by police in Miami after they found him eating the face of homeless man Ronald Poppo.

Elsewhere in Miami, a 21 year-old man allegedly tried to bite off a police officer's hand after he was arrested for disturbing customers in a restaurant. Further cases include an incident in Louisiana when a man was arrested after biting a chunk out ofhis neighbour's cheek.

Health professionals in America have expressed their concern at the rising number of cases involving bath salts. "These drugs perhaps in some way turn off the higher functioning areas of the brain and really reduce people to a very primal instinct," said Dr. Alexander Garrard of the Upstate Poison Control Centre. Statistic released by the centre show that in 2011, 118 cases were reported whilst in contrast 141 cases have been reported in the first five months of 2012 alone.

New forms of bath salts are emerging all the time as manufacturers and dealers seek to stay ahead of the authorities, preventing doctors from effectively keeping track of the drug's composition.

"We as public health care providers really don't know what to make of it. We have an idea how to manage it, but there is no anecdote for something like this. That's the scary part," Garrard said.

PALMETTO, Fla. - The latest in a string of “zombie” like attacks
happened in a Manatee County home Wednesday night after a
man under the influence went into a fit of rage and bit a piece of
someone’s arm off during a visit with his children.

Much like the Miami face-eating attack, 26-year-old Charles Baker got naked, ate human flesh and wouldn’t go down
without a fight, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Authorities say Baker went to his girlfriend’s home on 25th St in Palmetto to visit his kids at 10:15 p.m. They say he
was high on an unknown substance when he knocked on the door, then barged in, began yelling and taking off his
clothes.

He was screaming and wouldn’t calm down, then began throwing furniture around the home. Jeffery Blake, who lives in
the home, attempted to restrain Baker, but the suspect bit him, taking a chunk of his flesh from his bicep. Blake, 48,
was able to get Baker to the ground and kept him there until two deputies arrived.

When law enforcement came inside, Blake released Baker. Baker got up, but would not respond to deputies orders. The
suspect instead faced the deputies, tensing his body, clenching his fists and screaming.

Baker, still naked, acted like he was going to rush the deputies, according to the report. Deputy Wildt deployed his an
electronic control device after giving a verbal warning.

Baker fell to the ground, and then tried to get back up, so Deputy Wildt deployed the device again. Baker pulled the
probes out, so deputy Blake deployed his electric shock device.

Those probes were also pulled out, and Deputy Wildt deployed a second cartridge. By this time, several other deputies had arrived on scene and were able to hold him down and handcuff him.

Baker was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for evaluation before being transported to the jail.

MIAMI, Fla. -- Miami-Dade commissioners gave the preliminary OK Tuesday to banning sales of bath salts, the synthetic drug that experts say can make users violent, reports the Miami Herald.

Earlier this month, the Miami Herald reports the same board gave approval to banning sales of synthetic marijuana.

On the street, bath salts are touted as fake cocaine, a potent hallucinogen not to be confused with synthetic marijuana.

Both are designer drugs, but fake pot is sold as herbal incense and promises — but does not always deliver — a marijuana-like high.
It's easy to tell the safe stuff from the bad stuff — by the price.

A 6-pound bag of Epsom salts sells for $5 at the grocery store. Bath salts that get you high sell for $40 a gram.

They are snorted, swallowed and sometimes smoked.

"It is very much like cocaine," said Dr. Morton Levitt, a pathologist and chairman of the Integrated Medical Science Department at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. "It creates a state of euphoria."

Users can also experience extreme paranoia, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, extremely high body temperature, sleep deprivation, vivid hallucinations, enhanced strength, hostility and aggression.

"[They] can hear voices, become paranoid," said Dr. Randy Katz, medical director of emergency services for Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. "They can endure pain that a typical person couldn't handle. It can make them stronger."

Bath salts became a headline issue after officers speculated that the drug may have fueled last month’s attack on the Miami MacArthur Causeway, in which Rudy Eugene chewed off parts of a homeless man named Ronald Poppo. Toxicology results in the case have not yet been released, according to the Miami Herald .

Emergency officials in Maine have taken part in a training exercise in preparation for a zombie apocalypse. This comes just weeks after the federal government publicly denied the existence of zombies.
Around 100 emergency responders from eight different counties participated in the event in the quiet city of Bangor.

The premise: an unknown virus originating from Jamaica has reached Maine, turning the infected into zombies. Once infected, the virus quickly spreads to the brain, and turns the host into a full-fledged zombie, who has only one thing on its mind: biting other people.

The officials were armed with two would-be vaccines – one to prevent the infection from reaching the brain, and one to bring the zombies back to life.
“We have identified in several states, particularly Texas, New York, Illinois outbreaks of these civil disturbances and biting,” one official said. “And in conjunction with that there are also widespread power outages.”
The event may have been a staged act, with locals playing zombies, but it gave emergency responders an opportunity to prepare for a real life epidemic.

“This gives us the opportunity to do something a little bit different, but it still has the same principles that would apply in a real situation,” Kathy Knight, director of the Northeastern Maine Regional Resource Center told the Bangor Daily News. Emergency workers "need to figure out what they need, how they’re going to respond and how they are going to share their resources to respond to the disaster. They need to know who to go to outside their community to find the resources they don’t have, so it’s a different twist.”

The training exercise comes just several weeks after the US Center for Disease Control publicly denied the existence of zombies.
Rumors of a “zombie apocalypse” have been on the rise after a series of disturbing incidents.

In Florida, police caught a naked man chewing on the face of another person. They eventually shot him dead after unsuccessfully trying to push him away from the victim.

In Maryland, an engineering student allegedly stabbed a man to death and ate his heart and brain.

In Canada, a porn actor was detained on charges that he had killed and dismembered his lover. He is alleged to have recorded a video of himself copulating with some of the body parts, and consuming others. He is also suspected of sending the limbs of the victim to the headquarters of political parties, as well as two schools in Vancouver.
