British sex bomb of the 70s. Killed herself at 33 as the police were looking at a prison term for tax evasion and shop lifting. She slept with a lot of powerful people including allegedly Harold Wilson! Some think she would have never have drunk the vodka with the pills as she found alcohol revolting.Others have said she did occasionally drink but i cant verify that.

Anyhow a recent very good deco is avaiable Respectable http://www.marymillington.co.uk/?tag=respectable-film
This women certainly had the "it" factor

It is a good doc, but it is very depressing, she was horribly exploited by some dodgy geezers posing as funseekers and prudes who set out to destroy her as the epitome of the permissive society they hated, she was caught in the middle.

Maybe the only person ever to have alleged to have had sex with Harold Wilson and Jimmy Hill, though not at the same time. But she was incredibly depressed at the time of her death, so I have no doubt she killed herself. I think the last person she called before she did the deed pretty much told her to eff off and pull herself together. With friends like those...

Her spirit, energy and charisma shone through and I'm not talking about her porn roles. It makes the end even sadder, you are right her "friends" had multiple chances to step in and didn't.

It sort of reminds me of a bit of Sandy Denny or Janice Joplin - surrounded by people who didn't step in to say enough is enough.

Chinny! :D

Sorry.

Millington was a minor celebrity in the '70s. She was a leading porn model and starred in a filllum and the story went that she might've been a real star if she hadn't been quite short in stature. She certainly had stunning looks.

However, I've seen Come Play With Me, the actual sex-comedy feature that she was in (with Arthur English among others, no less!) and she was no Glenda Jackson.

I had boyfriends who would read the mags she was in and pass them round their mates so I looked at them too. They were a bit like the Jackie, except with stories of farfetched sexual encounters instead of Saturday jobs and eyeliner dilemmas. There were very few magazines for men back then apart from porn and technical and vehicle publications.

Back then soft porn was seen as liberating, in the sense that it was a way of bringing sex out into the open. Millington believed that she was indeed, as has been mentioned, 'the epitome of the permissive society' and that sex was wholesome and joyful. Not everyone agreed.

Her death was a shock. At the time celebrity deaths from overdoses and drug abuse were not exactly unusual so I thought she probably did kill herself, or it was an accident. I certainly didn't suspect murder. I'm wondering now, though.

Come Play With Me is one of the most successful British films of all time - just try and find people who have admitted to seeing it, though. Mary's only in one scene, a massage parlour bit. Her boyfriend, porn baron David Sullivan (who is still around, plying his trade) then put her in films where she actually starred. They were, like Come Play, all absolutely dreadful, but since she's such a cult figure, continue to make a lot of money for the rights owners.

I been watching Mary's film legacy in the recent box set remastering of her films. She had a real presence, and seemed sweet as could be, but not an actress yet. I bet she could have been good one given just little training though!

As far as the suicide, the piece that I've heard about people wondering if it makes sense, is that she did not like the taste of alcohol. Are there other instances of people who hate booze using it for their suicide?

probably a bit off at a tangent, and she is still alive so I won't say much, but Joni Mitchell seems to have been another one whose friends weren't her friends, if you see what I mean.

If you have decided to kill yourself I doubt whether disliking the taste of alcohol would put you off.

I'm watching the Netflix documentary on Denis Nilsen (absolutely great, among the best of the genre I've seen) which features a segment showing the attractions of Soho at the time, in the early 1980s.

Look what's on at the Moulin!
