Bad Medicine: Daffy Doctors & Medical Mishaps

A Russian doctor has lost his job after telling a girl bitten by a stray dog to go to church rather than receive a rabies vaccine, the Interfax news agency reported Wednesday.

The hospital, based in the city of Dalnegorsk in Russia’s Far East, had ran out of the life-saving medicine, Interfax reported.

Instead, the doctor told the child’s parents to “go to church and light a candle to pray that the dog was healthy."

"We have conducted a thorough check-up to ensure that rabies vaccines are available in every institution in the region,” said Pavel Serebryakov, vice governor for the Primorye region.

“The failure which occurred in Dalnegorsk hospital defies explanation,” he said.

The child was able to receive the vaccination, Serebryakov confirmed.

A TODDLER is thought to be the only person in the world to suffer from a mysterious condition, which means he can’t eat or drink anything – including water.

Two-year-old, Liam Denner has left medics baffled – unable to find an answer as to why the youngster’s body seems to attack itself when he eats or drinks.

Liam also has a depleted immune system which makes him prone to infections.

He has to be fed intravenously, through a process called parenteral nutrition (TPN).
....

“They went inside his bowel to investigate and they found these markings that they had never seen before.

“When he was fed things these markings open up for some reason.

“Then the specialist came from Amsterdam said he didn’t have a clue what was going on and they said at this moment in time there is nothing they can do to help him.”

A Malaysian Welder's Nut Adventure! :eek::eek::eek:[/URL]

But I think something more graphic may be called for:

Here you go!

I love the way this story involved the Fire Department, a Goldsmith, a "Gas-Cutter!" and a Welder. I think they just phoned all their mates!

" . . . a welding-shop fellow was brought by me and an opinion was taken regarding the management of hard nuts."

In the end, they put his penis on a big, rusty cog and took a hammer to it! Yes, that filthy great thing was part of the treatment. That'll learn him!

*I did once see someone raise weights with his organ. Exhibitionists are by definition the ones you never wanted to see!
I can't believe they did all that when there are special tools for the job.

Mexican governor: Cancer children given water instead of chemotherapy

Mexican authorities are to investigate allegations children battling cancer were given "distilled water" instead of chemotherapy.

An "in-depth investigation" will look into claims made by Veracruz governor Miguel Angel Yunes Linares on Monday, the Ministry of Health said.

He alleged fake medicine had been bought and used in state hospitals under his predecessor Javier Duarte.

Mr Duarte has been on the run from the authorities since October.

The former governor, who was elected in 2010, has not been seen since a week after he stepped down amid allegations of corruption.

He has been charged with organised crime and money laundering, but there are calls for the Attorney General's office to file criminal charges relating to the latest accusations. ...

Sheila Hynes died when surgeons inserted heart valve upside down

A woman died after surgeons inserted a heart valve upside down.
Sheila Hynes suffered massive internal bleeding during what should have been a routine operation at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The 71-year-old great-grandmother never came round from the operation after the mistake caused irreversible damage to her heart.
Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has admitted the error.
Mrs Hynes died a week after the operation, having never recovered consciousness.

The family have begun legal action. Their lawyer, Nicola Evans, said she believes Mrs Hynes' right to life under the Human Rights Act was breached.

Mrs Hynes' daughter, Jan Hopper, 55, from Haltwhistle in Northumberland, said: "My life has been destroyed by what happened to my mother.
"My mother was the picture of health that week and I can remember saying to her 'mum, you look absolutely stunning'."

An inquest into the April 2015 death has been scheduled for later this year.

Mrs Hynes, a widow with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, had undergone the surgery to try to improve her breathing, which was being hampered by inadequate blood flow.

Mrs Hopper said staff told her there had been a complication, but it was not until three days after the operation that the family were informed an error had been made.
She said: "We were told that putting the heart valve on the wrong way had caused her heart to balloon up and expand, and when it contracted the wall of her heart was pierced on an instrument.
"We still haven't come to terms with what happened. It has been traumatic."

The trust has admitted full breach of duty and that the error which caused Mrs Hynes' death was the insertion of the heart valve the wrong way.
A trust statement said: "Our thoughts are with Mrs Hynes' family at this difficult time and we would like again to offer our sincere condolences to them."

The trust said an investigation had been carried out but it could not comment further before the inquest.

married was he?

er, I mean poor bloke.

So I wonder what the story there was?

To get NF in the mood for talking, here's a slightly relevant anecdote from my hospital work days.

There were two side rooms on the ward. One housed an unfortunate gentleman with a hugely infected and swollen testicle.

As patients are known to staff by their conditions ('the Heart in Bed One' or 'the Leg in Bed Four' and so on) the testicle-suffering chap was wittily nicknamed The Goolie. A book was gleefully opened on who'd be the first to call him that to his face.

This wouldn't normally have been a problem as staff always remember to use patients' own names in interactions with them. Dammit, we're professionals!

However, the Spleen in the next room was a sweet elderly Scottish lady called... Mrs Goolie.

You'd have to be Einstein not to mix those two up. Sadly, Einstein didn't work on that ward.

Did he require a wheelbarrow?

He’s a celebrated urologist, but authorities are probing his surgical practice
By Jonathan Saltzman and Jenn Abelson , Globe Staff March 12, 2017

NEW YORK — After months of getting up several times a night to visit the bathroom, Peter Nadler was elated when Dr. David B. Samadi agreed to do his prostate surgery.

Samadi is a rare breed in medicine: a celebrity urologist. A regular medical expert on Fox News, he attracts international patients and boldface names, such as “Today Show” host Matt Lauer. His employer, Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan’s wealthy Upper East Side, built a luxurious wing where his patients are served gourmet meals. All that has helped make Samadi one of the country’s highest-paid surgeons, earning $6.7 million in 2015 as a specialist in robotic prostate surgery.

“He’s God,” Nadler, a 67-year-old retired restaurateur, recalled thinking when he met the doctor.

But after his June 2015 surgery for an enlarged prostate, Nadler began to wonder whether someone other than his famous urologist did the operation. Nadler barely saw Samadi that day and mostly remembered the doctor’s young assistants, he said. His urinary problems didn’t improve. Worse, he said, his libido vanished. Finally, this January he confronted the surgeon in Samadi’s posh Madison Avenue office: Did you do the operation or did someone else? ...

3 Women in Florida Left Blind by Unproven Eye Treatment

Three women went blind after receiving an unproven stem cell treatment on their eyes at a Florida clinic, according to a new report of the cases.

The women, in their 70s and 80s, all had macular degeneration, a progressive eye disease that leads to damage of the retina, and can cause vision loss. They underwent the stem cell therapy in 2015, in the hopes that it would treat their disease.

However, there's no evidence that the stem cell treatment the women received can help restore vision in people with macular degeneration, wrote the authors of the new report. Several of the report's authors treated the women for complications after the stem cell treatment; none of the authors were involved in the original treatment.

In addition, there is a lack of information on the safety of this treatment, and some of the techniques used by the Florida clinic were unsafe, the report said. Shortly after the procedure, the women experienced a number of complications, including vision loss, detached retinas and bleeding. [7 Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe]

"There's a lot of hope for stem cells, and these types of clinics appeal to patients desperate for care, who hope that stem cells are going to be the answer," Dr. Thomas Albini, an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of Miami and a co-author of the report, said in a statement. "But in this case, these women participated in a clinical enterprise that was off-the-charts dangerous," Albini said. ...

Blinding three women by quackery is dreadful.

I am haunted by the story that Both Bach and Handel were blinded by the same 18th Century quack!

"Handel, who died 250 years ago this year*, lived with declining vision for the last decade of his life following failed cataract surgery by Taylor. Bach died a few months after his surgery for what was described as a painful eye condition, which Albert believes may have been cataracts and a detached retina. A post-operative infection likely killed Bach."

Mother died from flesh-eating disease after sex game injured her wrist, inquest hears
Martin Evans
23 July 2017 • 12:22pm

A young mother, who suffered a minor injury during a sex game, died from a rare flesh-eating disease when medics failed to spot the condition, an inquest has heard.
Care assistant, Katie Widdowson, 24, told doctors she had hurt her wrist after agreeing to be restrained by her boyfriend in the bedroom.

She was diagnosed with a simple strain and sent home, but had to be rushed back into hospital the following day when her condition worsened.
The mother of one, from Castle Vale in Birmingham, was actually suffering from the flesh eating bug, Necrotising Fasciitis and died from a bacterial infection shortly afterwards.
...

Assistant coroner Emma Brown explained that Miss Widdowson had attended Good Hope's A&E department just before midnight, complaining to a nurse that she was suffering extreme pain in her left wrist.
She explained she was unable to feel her fingers, and the pain was spreading up her arm.

The coroner said her temperature, heart and pulse rate were all abnormal and therefore she ought to have been observed every 30 minutes.
But despite seeing two doctors and having an x-ray, she was told she had a sprained wrist, and was discharged.

The coroner told the hearing that Miss Widdowson should have been kept in hospital and undergone major surgery.
As a result, there were "clear failures" on the part of both doctors, she said.
"They flagrantly ignored the policy that was there for the very situation Katie found herself in," said Ms Brown.
"Her early warning score was six and should have resulted in regular and ongoing observations and further investigations. These were not carried out. If Katie had remained in hospital, it is clear that her death would have been avoidable.
"These mistakes amounted to a gross failure to provide basic medical attention.

"Katie's death was due to Necrotising Fasciitis contributed to by neglect."

etc...

I don't believe a sprained wrist caused that.
More likely, she picked up the infection at work.

Whatever! But you'd have expected the doctors to investigate more carefully, instead a jumping to a simple but wrong conclusion!

It's entirely conceivable the bacterial point of entry was raw skin on the wrists (e.g., rubbed raw by the alleged restraints).

However, there's nothing I've seen to indicate the infection was associated with the wrist(s) or to rule out pre-existing wounds or other candidate entry points.
