Medical Mysteries, Bizarre Cases

Castration Goes Wrong, Amateur Surgeon Arrested:

Considering castration?

If so, perhaps you should trust this delicate medical procedure to someone other than a 74-year-old fetishist you met online.

Responding to a Florida residence late Sunday night following a 911 hang-up call, police encountered homeowner Gary Van Ryswyk at the front door. The retiree explained that he “had that evening performed a castration to a male subject within the residence.”

"Just a little prick with a needle..."

Police then located the patient in the guest bedroom, where the man “was holding a bloody towel to his groin region.” On a table next to the bed was a jar containing the man’s testicles, according to an arrest report.

Since he was bleeding uncontrollably, the patient was flown to a Tampa hospital for “life saving measures.”

Van Ryswyk told cops that he met the patient through a web site for those interested in the eunuch lifestyle.

Van Ryswyk, who has no medical training, told police that when he was “younger and living on a farm,” he would have to “perform castrations on animals to include bulls and such.” Noting that “castration was a fetish of his as well,” Van Ryswyk added that he had “removed his own right testicle during the year 2012.”

A search of Van Ryswyk’s home in Sebring located a room that was “set up as a make shift surgical room,” complete with “cutting implements, gauzes, substances to clot blood, needles, and clamps used to restrict the blood flow to the testicles.”

Van Ryswyk, cops reported, said that during the botched castration he used “pain killer medication he bought from England through the internet.”

Argh! In the early days of the internet, a certain message-board was often featured in jump-lists of crazy things one had to see.

Pictures took a while to download in those days, which is probably just as well. I have never forgotten the sequence of shots in which a man took out one of his testicles, skinned it and replaced it in his scrote! Not all the operations involved the spilling of blood. Would-be eunuchs were advised on how to obtain the powerful clamps, used for animal-castration.

There were plenty of active participants in the discussions and "cutters" who offered their services to "cuttees." There are plenty more Van Ryswyks out there! :jugg:

Edit: Footnote added with link 5 pm:

As a footnote, the following video is just one of many on Youtube which seem designed to celebrate the extreme cruelty of pig castration in India and the Philippines. Something you may well prefer not to see. It belongs in the Animal Cruelty thread but may not merit a separate post. I cannot find the original video I saw of this practice but it was even more horrible: the screaming piglet being tied upside-down to a post.
For some crazy reason, castration of piglets is often called "pig-circumcision" online.

"Water" or something akin to it obstructing causing sensations within your ear canal: Bad.

Learning there's actually a spider in there: Really Bad + Embarrassing.

Learning it's a famously venomous brown recluse spider: OMFG!!
Missouri woman's ear discomfort caused by brown recluse spider

A woman who went to a Missouri doctor complaining of water in her ear was shocked to be told it was actually a highly venomous brown recluse spider.

Susie Torres said she thought the discomfort in her left ear was being caused by some water, but she went to a clinic in Kansas City to have it checked out and began to worry when the medical assistant expressed concern.

"She ran out and said I'm going to get a couple more people," Torres told KSHB-TV. "She then said, 'I think you have an insect in there.'"

Torres said she was even more surprised a few minutes later.

"She came back in and told me it was a spider," Torres said. "They had a few tools and worked their magic and got it out."

Doctors told Torres it was a brown recluse spider -- a highly venomous species -- but it hadn't bitten the inside of her ear.

"I never thought they would crawl in your ear or any part of your body," Torres said.

Torres said she is taking some precautions while sleeping.

"I went and put some cotton balls in my ear last night, because I did not have any ear plugs," said Torres. "I'm pretty terrified of spiders."

A doctor in Vietnam recently helped a patient who came in with a similar complaint in June. Dr. Thuoc looked into the patient's ear at the clinic in Hai Duong and found a spider nesting inside.

Thuoc was able to use a light to lure the spider out of the woman's ear.

Med School Cadaver's Heart Was In the Right Place (But Her Other Organs Weren't)

When students at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland dissected the cadaver of the 99-year-old woman, they found that her liver and abdominal organs were transposed — as if flipped across a vertical axis — though her heart was oriented normally

This is known as "situs inversus with levocardia," and it affects about 1 in 22,000 births, according to OHSU. But unlike most who have this rare condition, the woman experienced no ill effects during her lifetime — in fact, she was completely unaware that some of her organs weren't where they were supposed to be, her family told OHSU.

The donated remains belonged to Rose Marie Bentley, who died in October 2017. Her unusual case was presented today (April 8) in a poster at the 2019 American Association of Anatomists Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology, in Orlando, Florida.

The instructors had never seen this type of organ inversion in an anatomy lab before, "and it's so rare, I'm not sure I'll ever see another one," co-author Cameron Walker, an assistant professor of anatomy in the OHSU Anatomical Services Center, told Live Science.

"The real enlightenment came when we got to the abdominal cavity," Walker said. "When that was opened, we could see that her organs had been transposed." The liver, instead of being on the body's right side, was situated along the midline, with a larger left lobe. The stomach and the spleen, typically on the left, were on the right.

Information provided by the donor and her family suggested that Bentley experienced "robust health" well into her 90s, according to the authors. Over the years, she had undergone several surgeries: doctors removed her appendix, her gallbladder and her uterus. Indeed, the surgeon who performed the appendectomy told her at the time that the organ was on her left side, instead of on the right.

But the other two surgeons did not mention any anomalies in Bentley's anatomy, and her family said that neither she nor any of her relatives suspected that anything was amiss, the researchers said in the presentation.

Aside from the organs' flipped positions, they "did not appear unusual in any way, and she enjoyed normal function," the scientists said.

Another daunting arthropod-in-one's-ear case - this one involving a large bee ...
Patient with severe ear pain had bee burrowing inside him

A doctor in Vietnam shared video of an unusual situation when a patient with ear pain had a large bee burrowing inside his head.

The doctor used a small camera to look inside the ear of a patient who came in complaining of severe ear pain and the cause turned out to be a large bee.

The doctor said the bee was burrowing in the man's ear canal.

The video shows the doctor was able to safely remove the bee.

Your mama was right to tell you never to stick something up your nose ...
This Man Had a Drug Parcel Stuck Inside His Nose For 18 Years

Prisoners can be rather creative when it comes to smuggling in contraband. One such individual in Australia filled a balloon with marijuana and hid it inside his nasal cavity, successfully eluding detection. Clever, right?

Unfortunately, he was a little too successful - the mass stayed up there for nearly two decades.

The 48-year-old man's medical journey began with headaches that eventually saw him getting scans to uncover the underlying cause. After a few probing questions, he admitted he'd experienced a stuffy nose on the right side for years, as well as recurrent infections.

Scans revealed a "firm grey mass" in the man's right nasal cavity, so ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists at Westmead Hospital in Sydney performed an endoscopy under general anaesthetic to remove it, revealing a "rubber capsule containing degenerate vegetable/plant matter".

Eventually, the medical staff heard the full story. When the patient was incarcerated at age 30, his girlfriend stopped by with a tiny gift. To get the small bag of marijuana past the guards, the inmate slipped the contraband up his right nostril.

Getting it inside was clearly easier than getting it out again. In trying to fish out the package, the man only pushed it further up his nose. At some point he became convinced the balloon had slipped back down his throat and was lost for good.

To be fair to the patient, losing track of a drug package is easy to do if you think you've accidentally swallowed it. But 18 years later, it gave his doctors a great 'world first' medical report to submit. ...

A nose out of joint: first reported case of prison-acquired marijuana-based rhinolith
Murray Smith, Eugene Wong, Navid Ahmadi and Narinder Pal Singh

Abstract
Rhinoliths are calcareous concretions of the nasal cavity formed around a nidus that may be endogenous (eg, dislodged tooth) or an exogenous foreign body (eg, plastic bead inserted by a child). Rhinoliths are often found incidentally on endoscopy or imaging to assess for other pathologies. The incidence is estimated to be 1 in 10 000 of all otolaryngology outpatient presentations, but this is likely to be an underestimate due to the often asymptomatic nature of this condition. We describe the unique case of a rhinolith that developed from a marijuana-filled balloon that the patient attempted to smuggle into a correctional facility. After inserting the package into his nostril, the patient then mistakenly believed it had been accidentally swallowed. Despite experiencing persistent symptoms of nasal obstruction and recurrent sinonasal infections, the marijuana package was only discovered 18 years after insertion following imaging for an unrelated indication

Here's how to free a child's tongue that's trapped inside a bottle's opening. Yes - it happens ...
A Child Got His Tongue Stuck in a Bottle. Doctors Freed It with This Ingenious Method

When a boy's tongue became stuck in the neck of a juice bottle, a doctor had a clever idea on how to get it unstuck that was inspired by his memory of opening a wine bottle without a corkscrew.

The simple solution — an injection of air into the bottle — worked to free the child's tongue without the need to cut the bottle or give the boy general anesthesia, according to a new report of the case published today (Oct. 31) in the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.

The use of this "positive-pressure" method "proved to be a simple, effective and safe technique for releasing a tongue entrapped in a bottle," study lead author Dr. Christoph Eich, of the Department of Anaesthesia at Auf der Bult Children's Hospital in Hannover, Germany, said in a statement. "We would suggest trying this method before more invasive procedures under general anesthesia are considered." ...

The 7-year-old boy had been licking the inside of the juice bottle to try to get the last drops of juice, the authors said. But suddenly, the boy's tongue became stuck. His mother tried to remove it by pulling and twisting the bottle, but to no avail. The boy was taken to the emergency room, where a pediatric surgeon also tried to pull the bottle loose, but the boy's tongue wouldn't budge.

So the hospital's anesthesia department was consulted. Doctors gave the boy a light sedative and inserted a thin tube, called a cannula, between the tongue and the bottleneck in an attempt to release the presumed vacuum in the bottle. But this had no effect.

That's when Eich had the idea to inject air into the bottle. Doctors connected the cannula to some IV tubing and a 20-milliliter (0.7 ounce) empty syringe. After a few pumps of air, the boy's tongue squeezed out of the bottle neck. ...

I see, from a story attached to the story above, that Gillette has made a new Ad about a transgenders first shave with his dad, suppose they are trying to make up that 8 biliion they lost.

Really? All I got was the bloke with tapeworms in his brain after eating a dodgy pork casserole.

(After being taught about the life cycles of parasites at school I've always been very careful indeed around meat, so I found the item interesting)

Ewwwww, i remember my husband was really ill, vomiting and really watery poo it was disgusting, i callled the doc and apparently he had food poisoning from a pork pie from a shop, in the poo bucket was these black things, bout inch maybe more long, they were some sort of a worm coming from him, it blocked the toilet can you imagine having to stick your, covered hand, down that, i was nearly puking.

I really need to hear more! Were they worms then? They don't usually give you food poisoning straight off from pork. Something much worse was going on there!

Perhaps trichinella or trichinella worms? They are usually removed before the slaughter is finished.

You should have potted some of them in acrylic. would have made great Christmas presents.

To be so long I suspect they may have been lurking (and enjoying a free lunch) for some time.
