I originally posted this in the urban legends section, but then realised that was for 'new and upcoming' legends, whereas this is almost ten years old now...

Has anyone ever come across the weird story of Mel's Hole, the seemingly bottomless pit situated on an obscure piece of land, which was supposedly confiscated by the government after the owner went on Art Bell's Coast to Coast paranormal radio show? I just spent over four hours listening to the entire tale on YouTube - and you can also read about it on Wikipedia. The story starts off as plausible and weird, before jumping the shark and going completely nuts in its final stages.

I just wondered if anyone else had heard of this story, and what their thoughts were.

Thank you - I did search but couldn't find anything for some reason!

I do agree, it's an unfortunate name!

As predicted by the OP, the sheep-lowering experiment has now been excised from Wikipedia.
I am unclear why and how lowering a crated live sheep would deliver more information about the nature of the hole.

I just listened to the very long Astonishing Legends episodes covering Mel's Hole, and I'd just like to say that some people will believe anything. Cool story, though.

Looks like this urban legend may have inspired the Outer Range sci-fi TV series:

It was obvious just from the previews that they definitely were inspired by Mel's hole and Skinwalker Ranch. I can't bring myself to watch the show.
Just finished it today. Delightfully bonkers
Definitely inspired by both as you suggest. Here's hoping for a season 2. There's a lot of questions left to be answered.

Really enjoyed the Mel's Hole episodes of Astonishing Legends. I agree with Scott, that it was an elaborate hoax that a lot of people fell for. There were too many things that couldn't be proven, that should have been easily proven for me. Fantastic story though. Made me smile.

If it comes up cooked then there is a dragon? :twothumbs:
