Money From Out Of The Blue (Cash Found Or Unexpectedly Received)

I've always had an odd kind of luck with money. I never get richer and never get poorer.
I have this problem too.
Funnily, my finances right now (now that I'm unemployed) seem to be marginally better than they have been for a long while.

I have one of those large Bells Whiskey bottles at home. Every time I spot a coin on the floor (outdoors) it eventually ends up in the bottle. I been doing this for years and the bottles approx a quarter full now. Train stations act like a magnet for loose change on the floor and apart from money I once found a full packet of cigarettes there too.

True story: Sainsburys, one afternoon, buying myself a coffee and a snack. Fumbled my card at the checkout, dropped it on the floor at my feet, crouched down to retreive it and discovered a large lump of hashish (several ounces) wrapped in cling film immediately beside my card. I glanced left and right with Admiral Akbar screaming in my ears, reached out and...

...somehow, via an insalubrious intermediary, this anecdote ends in a way connected with finding money and results in my friends enjoying an unexpectedly pleasant evening in the pub - because I don't smoke.

Edit: Wrong supermarket.

I do the exact same thing but the found coins go into a plastic skull shaped pint glass .. I need to start thinking bigger!.

Top ten places for finding coins
1: Bus station
2: train station
3: outside shops - especially on friday, saturday nights
4: outside pub and clubs
5: college grounds
6: estates
7: left in the self service supermarket despensers.
8: inside buses
9: old clothing
10: down the back of your mates sofa.

11: Down the back of your mate's pants.

Just me, then.

I think I've met him! ....

We used to have a PE teacher at school who's famous trick at the rugby club bar was performing how much small change he could keep in his foreskin .. again, it was different times ...

We had a very nice looking music teacher - she was gorgeous. But she never did any tricks with cash :(

I found £30 (or maybe it was £40) when I was about 16/17 years old, so about 20 years ago. I went into a bank to use the cash machine. It was an old, floor standing machine that gave you a large receipt with your cash as it was dispensed. There were loads of old receipts just lying on the floor, on the high table next to the machine and on the machine itself. As I was waiting for the machine to dispense my cash, I started poking through the old receipts on the machine and found 2 notes - each one stuck with static electricity to the back of a receipt.

I didn't even think twice - both went into my pocket. I was a hard up student at the time with bills to pay. The money was spent on study materials*

*Porn and beer.

I drew 250 quid out of the cashpoint at work a couple of years ago, and it showed on my bank statement as withdrawing it and then immediately paying it back in.

The machine had no deposit facility, I told the bank, the company that owns the machine and the finance department at work and nobody knew what to do!

It's still sitting in a drawer at home....the minute I spend it someone will ask for it back....

"Bank error in your favour, collect £250." You'll be winning second prize in a beauty contest next. Oh yes, you will!

The only times I've found large amounts of money (that I can remember)

When I was about 5, I needed a wee so my Mum let me sneak around the back of a building in Sutton Coldfield (because she was out doing the shopping) ... I saw about 3 weeks of pocket money so ran back round, excited, and told my Mum .... I forgot to mention the turd next to the coins so I wasn't allowed to take the coins home.

When I was about 20 or so, I walked out of our front door and there were paper notes blowing around in the driveway ... I took them back into my Dad, went back out and found even more .. turns out, my Dad was too pissed to drive home so my Mum had .. and he'd dropped the money. He gave me a tenner as a reward. You don't rip your own Dad off, do you ..

A lad was walking with his girlfriend in front of us and dropped a tenner so I picked it up and handed it back to him .. the tosser didn't even say thank you ...

Another tenner found when I was working as a cook in a supermarket café .... there was absolutely no one anywhere near it so I pocketed it with no guilt at all ...

Very wise mate .....

...are we no veering off into the "Celebrity won second prize in a lookalike contest" we've heard told a hundred times about a hundred different celebrities..often from their own mouth?

Surpassed in popularity only by the soap actor who claims to have been bashed over the head with an umbrella by a little old lady in a supermarket who mistook him for his character. She gets around, that old lady.

23rd December, 2008: was coming back from a refreshing ale or ten with friends and passed through Reading town centre, which was largely deserted at that time of night. Just going into Queen Victoria Street from Broad Street, I spotted a great, fat fifty pound note on the floor. Picked it up - it was 100% genuine! I let out a little drunken whoop...

....and then saw the homeless guy crouched in the doorway nearby, looking at me with incredulity. How he hadn't seen it is anyone's guess.

I gave it to him and wished him a happy Christmas.

Well done! :)

I stood behind a guy at a cash machine outside ASDA, he took his card and receipt then walked off looking at them, but he left the big wad of cash in the machine, he thanked me profusely when i shouted him back

Found a wallet in the middle of the road today, husband spotted it and took care NOT to drive over it. Anyway, contained cards, £20 and some obviously cherished passport pics of a lady (taken in the 90's I'd say). Tried local post office to see if anyone knew the man on the bus pass, and looked in telephone directory with no luck. BUT there was a list of phone numbers in there, including "mine" which I rang but no answer. Then rang 'Jerry' off the list, who turned out to be a friend and tried to contact owner of wallet. No luck, so I asked for address and dropped it off about 5 miles from where I found wallet. By then I already knew pics were of his deceased wife, so it felt even more important to get wallet back. Owner was very very pleased and called me an angel. He wanted to give me a tenner from the wallet, after refusing twice, I told him to give it to charity and he said "I rather you gave it to charity yourself". Just done that, and have to admit, I feel really happy at having done a good deed today :).

Nice one LQ ..... now start making some Evil Dead fabric stuff as the cherry on the top (for me anyway) .. :)

Just goes to show though, no such thing as a truly altruistic act, as reuniting man with his wallet has made me feel really good :).

Did he turn out to be an eccentric millionaire testing to find a decent man at xmas? Not in a homoerotic way,in a Frank Capra way. Tsk.

Someone transferred about £250 into my account from somewhere in Yorkshire. My bank couldn't trace it back but said that it was definitely meant to be in my account. I waited until I had the letter confirming this then spent it.
