Unseen episodes of Monkey found

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3579129.stm

Thirteen unseen episodes of cult 1970s TV show Monkey have been uncovered and are being dubbed into English by the show's original voiceover actors.

Andrew Sachs, famous for his role as waiter Manuel in comedy Fawlty Towers, returns as Yu-Lung and David Collings reprises his role as Monkey.

The dubbed Japanese mythical fantasy show about the animal spirit Monkey was a popular children's show.

Sachs and Collings said they could barely remember making the early shows.

The pair had never actually met before being united on the BBC Breakfast show on Monday.

Difficult

The voiceovers were recorded separately in a studio in London's Soho.

"We had to put on cod Japanese accents... I thought it would be a bit strange but it seemed to work," he added.

The programme is one of many children's shows that have cornered the market in nostalgia with thirty-something adults.

"Kids from the 70s still remember it as their favourite programme," said Sachs.

David Collings' next project is a far cry from Monkey - he will be appearing at the National Theatre in London in two French plays including Cyrano de Bergerac.

Well there doesn't seem to a be a Monkey thread so I'll use this one.

"Aware of Vacuity, you say. Well, he looks a bit vacant."

Are we sure it's actually a remake, and not just another series based on The Journey to the West?

Oh, and I counted at least three factual errors in that story, suggesting that the reporter's understanding is somewhat limited.

It does sound like a remake - "A Chinese Tall Story" though is based on "The Journey to the West" (although one would wonder how they'd be able to avoi some Monkey influence - even if it is an anti-influence reaction against it ;) ).

HERE is the other thread that features Monkey quite a bit, but I don't know if it's really mergable...

Very loosely based, but there have been a number of other films of the story. (Actually, I thought the obvious influence in the Chinese Fairytale/Odyssey/Tall Story film/s was the clothing. Although I expect there are traditional costumes for the characters.)

Of course, there's also DragonBall the original version which is based on it. There are a number of other Manga that are directly or indirectly ripped off from it as well.

And of course, there's the Iron Monkey films. Although, technically speaking, it's not based on The Journey to the West but is about someone who plays Monkey in the Chinese Opera version.

As for the new version, here's hoping they get the original voice cast to do the dub. Or at least as many of them as are still alive. They could use the same people they used for the "lost" episodes of the original. Was that any good? I haven't got hold of it yet.

[EDIT] Just saw on the local news that they're filming some of the locations in Australia. As opposed to Ancient China, which has stricter requirements for filming permits.

We are possibly thinking of different films but the main Iron Monkey film is about a Robin Hood-style figure, Iron Monkey, and Wong Kei-Ying (Wong Fei-Hung's father - who appears as a child and later grew up to be a Chinese Robin Hood in real life):

There are other Iron Monkey films from the Seventies and early Eighties:

www.imdb.com/title/tt0165729/
www.imdb.com/title/tt0182724/

But these seem to be about the monkey style of kung fu and/or (in that last one) a girl raised by monkeys who happens to have superior monkey kung fu. I've not seen them though but that last one certianly has me intrigued :)

Also, The New Adventures of Monkey is available in the UK on Netflix. Two seasons of 11 episodes. I enjoyed it all but the final four episodes are particularly excellent.
