More Vivid Dreaming During The COVID-19 Pandemic

I was dreading going to sleep last night after the previous dream, but I got a melange of characters from It's a Sin and me looking up the Hanna-Barbera live action film CHOMPS online to find a picture of the titular dog's paw with a light shining from it, which seemed to represent great, cosmic wisdom.

Yes, I have dreams about looking up stuff on the internet. Though I did look up the film today and nobody thinks it represents great, cosmic wisdom.

Good article in the latest FT regarding nightmares during the current pandemic. It seems the reporting of nightmares is up by 35% and, in the English speaking world, they often centre around insects.
This is put down to the use of the word bug for both viruses and diseases in our language as well as insects etc. It appears from other studies in non English speaking countries the nightmares do not include the insects.

I dreamed the other night that I was on a bus, going through 'the Bronx' (a place I have no intention ever of going). I looked out of the bus window and could see the Statue of Liberty and a bridge, which I knew the name of in the dream. Then the bus driver started going faster and faster and it all became shades of The Simpsons, with the driver flipping the doors open outwards whenever we passed people walking, to knock them over. I remember we flipped over a load of nuns.

Is dog your co-pilot?

I had a dream in which I could levitate & travel aloft by holding my arms in an 'eighteen minutes past eight' position. Don't remember too much else about it but it was unusual in as much as I've never had a flying/levitating dream before.

I've mentioned reading before in dreams, but last night's was even more clear.

I was reading a local tabloid paper, going through the small ads. The right-hand page of a spread was filled entirely with death notices but the left-hand page was the usual small ads, and I particularly remember one selling film and TV-related stuff, X-Flies, James Bond, Star Trek, Doctor Who, 'everything from 1968 guaranteed collectable condition'...

The only other things I can remember: walking along a short road or cut-de-sac with shops on the left. There was an empty barber's shop that served customers up to 79 and 12 months! At the end was a small cafe where football was on TV. It was near the end of the game and there was a goal that was described as being a great goal, so I turned to watch the replay, and it was a rubbish goal! A scuffed pass and a header from just in front of goal. And there was a very, very, very old man in the corner of the cafe.

No idea what it all means...

I had two dreams last night where I'd just given birth. In the first I was being accommodated somewhere, just post birth. I'd had twins and was being asked if I wanted the 'cabin with the shower'. I thought 'I've just pushed two babies out, damn right I want a shower'. It was very dark and semi-primitive, like one of these zero waste, eco-friendly camping holidays, with lots of other people around.

The second one was...weird. I woke up in a big house. Remembered I'd had a baby and left it in its car seat behind the sofa. Feel horribly guilty and went and fetched the baby, who was an odd purple colour, but smiled at me when I fetched him. I was briefly disconcerted because I know very new babies don't smile. Anyway, I was running a bath and telling the baby that we could both have a bath together, when my mother in law (which I don't have in real life) turned up at the bathroom door with two sisters in law, one pushing another baby in a buggy. We were, apparently, going out somewhere and they were waiting for me. One of the sisters in law got my baby out of his car seat, at which point he ran off. I said 'you've got to watch him, he's a bit of a bugger', and got in the bath without closing the door, figuring that if they were going to stand there, they could watch me have a bath. Then I got out and started drying myself with a green bathtowel which had very long fibres, like those silky scarves you get that always get in your mouth when you're talking. I noticed I had blue and white paint up the side of my arm and tried to rub it off with the towel.

The phone woke me up at this point.

The In House GP reported that he was dreaming at about 5 am, that we had gone into Exeter together but gone our separate ways to collect different things. Wherever he was going, he spotted one of his disabled patients who was obviously struggling, so he felt obliged to walk home with them. Suddenly Exeter became Liverpool, and once he had left the patient at home, he said he was very aware of being nearly 300 miles away with no phone and no money (he's like the Queen, he lets me carry the cash!). He was wondering how he was going to get back when he woke up. BUT then he went back to sleep and plunged straight back into the same dream, where he was trying to rationalise his next move to get home.

I think he may then have been woken by the alarm as there was no description of his return to Devon!

This morning I was dreaming about being some kind of trainee detective or FBI agent working a murder-suicide case with a bunch of other trainees - one of whom looked like Margaret Thatcher. The strange thing was that within the dream, I was aware of having been through this scenario before but in a slightly different way; some of our decisions and viewpoints were changed from the previous time. Now I'm not one for repetitive dreaming, mine all tend to be one-off productions, so why the deja vu? Had I perhaps been dreaming this same dream earlier in the night and fell back into it after waking, the same way that the In House GP did yesterday?

As for the Thatcher lookalike, I've tracked that back to the news showing an image of Gillian Anderson playing that role in The Crown, for which she won a Golden Globe; the image was obviously drifting round my head!

The last two nights have woken from nightmares.
Both were different, but contained me facing things which torment me during waking hours....a fear of being trapped in a toxic relationship, and the after-effects of the break up of my "friendship" with a narcissist which happened to me about 4 years ago.

In my dream confronted the ex-friend, and had a bitter verbal exchange.

It put this down to being tired and depressed from my job, even though I do not want to be and there are millions far far worse off.

Last week I had a dream about hell and being judged. I was in a line of people who were moving slowly forward. There was a lot of tension in the air. When a couple of people in front of me got to the front of the line, I observed them being laid down side by side by some humanoid creature which I could not make out it’s features. The humanoid thing spoke English to the two people and although I could not make out what was being said I knew it was not good and had something to do with sins they had committed in their lives. I watched as the two people were dragged off screaming whilst things were probed into them, and as this was happening I was led firmly to an alter and made to lay on top of it. I then saw images of a party I was at where all sorts of sins where being committed but that I was not directly involved. A voice then asked me to explain myself which I found I couldn’t do. I was then told I would have to wait for further judgement and told to get up where I then had to walk past more humanoids whilst I was saying I had not done anything wrong and in which one of the humanoids that was female saying ”yes we know you haven’t“. I then found myself laying amongst other people all waiting for something. It was very frightenin.

Last year I had a very vivid dream of Reincarnation. I voice spoke telling me to open my eyes as it was my time. I then found myself floating up and as i did I turned over in mid air and saw 3 men laying side-by-side and all wearing world war 1 British uniforms. I instinctively knew one of the bodies was mine. I then found myself standing in a bright lit room. The same voice as before told me to choose one to be my mother. I then saw many women standing in a semicircle. All the women where heavily pregnant and all very beautiful and of different ethnicities. I found I had no preference for any skin colour or height, and just went to the one I was attracted to. I don’t remember anything after that but I had this very string feeling that the woman i choose was my real life mother.

Are you stressed about getting a covid19 vaccination?

Here's last nights metaphorical covid anxiety dream: I trapped a wasp nest in a towel, chucked it in the washing machine and put it on a cycle so that the water and heat would kill them but was then too scared to get the towel out in case the wasps were still alive and would get me.

The other nights dream was full of weird details.
i dreamt me and my other half , left my nans house and walked to the bus stop at the top of her street. Oddly though we walked to the bus stop where I would normally get off the bus if going to my nans. I have never got on the bus there because at the next stop is the the terminus and the bus turns round to come back. The bus stop home is the other side of the road. I haven't gotten the bus to my nans for about 25 years.

Then we were magically in my house but I was trying to pack my suitcase to go away with the girls. I was trying to pack my casio keyboard (From childhood) in the case. I was concerned I couldn't manage the case, a bottle of squash and the dog, the dog was my previous one, and he was getting tangled up. I rang a bloke from work for help and explained the situation but he just laughed. I then decided to leave the squash with my other half even though he would have 2 bottles.

I was then at the railway station with the girls and we were on our way home from the trip. We pulled up on the street around the corner from my house and my friend said she would bring my case round later. My current dog ran up to see me and he looked like he did before the last disastrous groom he had (he was almost bald and looked like a rat-its slowly growing back) .

I went to the house i was renting separate from my own but it was quite old fashioned. I went into the bathroom and it was a bit like an old pub ladies and the sink area had two sinks set in a a mable top and a huge mirror behind it. The bathroom suite was that yuky beige colour really old fashioned pubs had. Set round the corner was the loo and an old fashioned gas fire. I was really concerned this gas fire had been on the whole time I'd been away. The gas fire had a glass panel in front of it and it had a a depiction of the stick figures riding a roller coaster. As the glas got hot the roller coaster would go!

I just woke from a dream in which I looked in the mirror and had a completely different face!

I was being shown around his home with a group of my friends, by a big, bluff older man. The house was like a church, huge, cavernous and with little side rooms off, like chapels. Whilst he showed us around, there was a young man in one of the side rooms, typing furiously on a very steam punk style typewriter, like a huge old fashioned keyboard with lots of extra parts, and built up very high. I think he was meant to be typing the old man's life story. At one point I looked in a mirror and I had (quite unlike real life) a short, dark, very 'twenties' style bobbed hairstyle, long eyes and a small mouth - I looked in my late teens. I remember thinking 'that's not me', and touching my face, and being quite happy that I'd got a new 'look' that was a huge improvement!

As we looked around, the young man left the typewriter and I, curious, looked at what he was typing. It was something along the lines of a Will, and I could read that the old man was leaving everything to me. I was embarrassed and confused and then had to pretend that I couldn't see the document as I didn't want anyone to know that I'd already read it!

As to who I was, or who he was, I have no idea!

Yep ... On the rare occasions (within a dream) when I look into a mirror and see what's supposed to be my own image it never looks like my "real world" self.

I don't remember ever having seen my own face in a dream before. I've always thought that mirrors, like books and light switches, didn't 'work properly' in dreams.

Items you see in dreams that look like "Real World" items that operate in a certain manner don't necessarily operate the same way in dreams. They may be dream realm representations or surrogates for something only tangentially related - or even completely unrelated - to the object you see in the dream.

That's a common thing, where your reflection doesn't match.

Last night I dreamed about a typewriter like that. It was one of those tall black ones and I was looking down on it. At some point there was a technical drawing of it which I consulted.

I had a weird one last week , the strangest part being that people were waiting for The Pope to arrive ...for him to perform an abortion on some women.....just a very strange dream !

'Pope' and 'abortions'. Does not compute!

Last night I dreamed I was an 18th century man (I'm a woman IRL) about to escape two men who'd come to kill me. The closest one to me jumped at me, but he was suddenly dead, like I'd accidently killed him as he attacked me, and then somehow the second one was dead and I'd pinned their murders on the group they were working for.

Except, as I reflected on this while waking up, I thought that they'd probably really killed me, and as I died I'd only fantasized about having gotten away successfully . . .

Increased incidence of vivid and / or disturbing dreams is now a recognized medical issue. It even has its own name - "quaradreaming."
Are you having more nightmares? You might be 'quaradreaming'

(CNN)Are you waking up more often these days from an unpleasant dream, even a scary nightmare?

Blame a combination of pandemic-fueled sleep changes, laced with a year's worth of stress, sleep experts say.

"My patients have been coming in and telling me, 'I have vivid dreams, I remember my dreams, I have nightmares,'" said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. ...

The phenomenon started about a year ago, not long after lockdowns began around the world. Frontline workers were hard hit -- a June 2020 study of 100 Chinese nurses found 45% experienced nightmares, along with varying degrees of anxiety and depression.

But nightmares have continued as quarantines and lockdowns stretched on, experts say. One reason: an increase in "night owls." ...

"When you're getting more REM during stressful times, you get more REM nightmares. We're calling this phenomenon 'quaradreaming'" ...

Had my first vaccination last Thursday (M/UK/52). Had a vivid, colour almost movie-like dream that night in which I was part of a team attempting to liberate Chinese college kids from their alien enslavers. The aliens took the form of female humanoid robots with weaponised index fingers. You had to kill the brain of the aliens as they would regenerate otherwise. It was a highly entertaining dream and pleased to say we won :)
