Murderers: How Many Have You Met?

Three. One of them is a good friends Dad. He was a notorious criminal in his day but now in his seventies and deeply regretful about his past life.
The second was a local in the pub I used to drink in. He killed his wife. A very unpredictable character.
The third is a very good friend of mine . Stabbed a man to death in the 1970s. I’ve known him since the 1980s and go out with him regularly.

Murderers - two. Both men who killed their significant others.
Murder victims- four. Two were the victims of the above, one was my cousins friend, abducted and murdered aged seven, and one was a lad I was at school with. Killed by his wife and her boyfriend, and buried under the patio. Oh, actually five. There was an old guy when I was in my teens who used to wander round the village talking to himself. Killed by a bunch of lads who broke in to his house one night. I didn’t “know” him per se, but he was a local character we saw most days.

One that I recall who killed his wife whilst working in a Civil service department (I was the one working in the Civil Service department i hasten to add).

A mate of mine reckoned that he nattered to Charles Ng in the Railway pub in Preston. It was feasible but I personally doubt his story.

I have a third.... woman I used to work with stabbed her husband. She was done for man slaughter.

When I was a tween, the minister of music at my church was murdered after picking up a stranger during a secret life visit to a porn theater. A few years later, a good friend in high school dated a guy who was a neighbor of the murderer. He said the guy aspired to murder, even as a kid.

Yup, it's feasible. In the mid-70s Ng had been living in Yorkshire and if he went south, could have been between trains at Preston.

I know a 20 year old who works for a large company an offshoot of which is involved in offender rehabilitation. Although he's not involved in the rehab work, he often has to deal face to face with people who have been inside for murder. He finds it quite unsettling.

A friend had an old car with the registration **** NG. It was often commented on. Edit - The car was a nightmare actually. My mate had a close call with it when it suddenly put itself into reverse whilst he was standing beside it with the door open. He was knocked over as the car slammed into the garage door. During his ownership it was run into the back of twice, every time being rebuilt. He sold it on to another friend and again it nearly killed him when it did the reversing thing without warning. In his ownership it was run into the back of again. He sold it on locally and it was written off by a white van (in Preston of all places), the car being smashed to pieces. About 3 years ago it appeared on Ebay, apparently having been completely rebuilt. Being sold by the owners brother because the owner was in prison serving a long sentence. A car to steer well clear of.

I have lived in the Middle East and I once saw a man extra-judiciously stoned to death for apostacy in Yemen by about 50 people, of whom I knew 3 at the time. So... does lynching count as murder? The police were in on it btw. Charming business.

Automatic gearbox and a Renault, by any chance?

I would say that, morally speaking, it is a case of murder. But standards are different in the Middle East, I guess.

Auto box obviously but a late 50's british car, albeit extensively modified professionally. I feel sorry for anyone buying this car. Unfortunately the NG registration was none transferable, but I'd be getting a different reg for it if it was mine. Strange that it's last attempt at self destruction was in Preston.

Yup, it's murder. By the standard of any society that requires a trial before punishment, anyway.
An important aspect of a process of public stoning is that the blame is distributed among everyone present and even among the who witness it but don't take an active part. So everyone is equally guilty and nobody is more guilty than anyone else.

A little like the law of affray in England, where anyone who's present during a pub brawl is likely to be arrested whether they were involved or not.

How come?

It's a very common surname here, usually pronounced something like the 'mm' in 'mm-hmm'.

Firstly because it's a very early and unusual car registration number combination for the UK. Secondly because it does represent a name, albeit rare in the UK and thirdly because the name had connotations mentioned previously in this thread.

Found out last Saturday (flicking through Facebook) that somebody I attended art college with 25 years ago killing his girlfriend. Now serving life for the rather brutal murder (still, what murder isn't brutal?). I can't quite marry up the person I knew from college and the person who did this. He seemed quiet, intelligent - almost gentle - certainly nothing that I thought of as being that disquieting. He was into robots, comics, science fiction... Also a very good artist as well. We had a jam session a few times with the aim of forming a band - he actually played in a few bands back then. I remember on a week long art trip to Wales with the college, we headed off into some woods for the day - felt like we were involved in some quest culminating in finding a huge tree that we left an offering too (of a few coins if I remember rightly. We talked about leaving a lighter, but were hesitant in case the fire / tree symbolism thing might be seen as harmful). We left college and went our separate ways. He was somebody I liked but wouldn't say we were close friends (a bit like having a work colleague you get on well with). I find it hard to marry up my memories of the person I went to college with with the person who ended up committing murder. It was easy enough to find information about the case - there was even a video of him being arrested that was released by the police - that was uneasy viewing, I can tell you.

Actually, my wife met a man who had killed his wife with a hammer. The details obviously will remain anonymous.

One that I know of. She was a colleague of my ex and she was still a wanted woman in Germany. She'd been on holiday with a friend and they were invited onto some rich bloke's yacht. Anyway, he turned out to be a psychopath/ rapist and they had to fight to save themselves. They ended up killing him. There's even a movie about the event though I can't remember the name of it, but I did see it once.

Now this has got me thinking - my Dad met a few murderers during the time he was re-wiring Dartmoor Prison and fitting new lights. He accidentally let known the date the new lights were being connected up and there was a big escape during the time the electricity was off. That's what he told me anyway - the bloke who got away was an IRA murderer.

But I remember him telling me some of their stories - the one that sticks in my memory is the guy who chopped his wife up and kept her in a suitcase.

I also knew a gang of trouble makers when i was at school - more in the role of victim than friend. They attacked me one day and it was reported to the police. Anyway a year or so later one of them was in court and me and my friend being beaten up came up as an extra crime he wanted to be taken into consideration. I got compensation for it, half of which i had to give to my sister for some reason.

The main crime he was up for was an extremely serious assault on a nurse where she had quite nasty head injuries where he'd struck her with a blunt object. I reckon this guy was a murderer in the making. I hope they got him locked up before he did kill though.

Eek. I don't want to "like" this, but thanks for sharing it. At the risk of concentrating on the most trivial point, the detail about the prison break during the power outage is priceless.
