The Nine men's morris is not just a game: it is a very common symbol that can be found engraved in ancient monuments and almost always vertically, on a wall. When it is horizontal you might think it was used to play, but vertically no!
On this page http://www.piloton.it/forteana/3cinta/3cinta.html (use right mouse button to translate) I talk about a book in Italian that deals very well with the subject: in the first half it analyses the symbol and the possible explanations and in the second there is a very limited list of where to find this symbol in ancient Italian monuments.
The first (perhaps) to talk about it were Paul Le cour and René Guénon, analysing what could be an esoteric interpretation, but also a reference to Atlantis (based on the descriptions of Plato's Critias) or to the celestial Jerusalem.
To find a much more complete list you can go to the site https://www.centro-studi-triplice-cinta.com/galleria-fotografica/ there are all the photographs and places.
For lovers of the Templars, two of these symbols are also found in the engravings of the castle of Chinon attributed to the grand master Jacques De Molay.
