I somehow missed this first time around, thanks for the nudge on t'other thread. Anyway, could you tell me more about roasting jackfruit seeds? Sounds intriguing, and I need healthier snacks...

I think the process is like cooking up giant peanuts - he dries them, coats them in oil and either cooks them slowly in the oven or in a pan on the open fire or stove, adding salt afterwards. A Bengali friend cooks them in a curry like giant beans :)

It'll make a massive mash.

New Zealand couple are waiting to hear if a mammoth potato they dug up has been recognised as the biggest in the world.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were weeding their garden at their small farm near Hamilton when his hoe struck something huge just beneath the soil’s surface. As the couple knelt down and began digging around the object, Mr Craig-Brown wondered if it was some kind of strange fungal growth like a giant puffball. But after prying it out with his garden fork, he scratched away a bit of the skin and tasted it.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Mrs Craig-Brown said. “It was just huge.”

When the couple lugged the mutant-looking potato into their garage and put it on an old set of scales, it weighed in at a remarkable 7.9kg. That is equal to a couple of sacks of regular potatoes or a small dog.

Possibly world's largest potato to receive DNA test in bid for Guinness record

A New Zealand couple who grew what they believe to be the world's largest potato said a sliver of the spud has been sent for DNA testing in their bid to have it declared a Guinness World Record.

The Craig-Browns said they have been in contact with Guinness World Records, but the organization keeps responding with requests for more evidence. ...

The couple submitted photos, video and a statement of verification from an agronomist, but Guinness has now requested a DNA test be performed to confirm Dug's species.

"They need to know what genus it is, what variety it is, you know, what his grandfather's name was," Colin Craig-Brown said.

The couple said a sliver from Dug is being sent to Lincoln University in Scotland for DNA analysis. ...

Update - World’s largest potato not a potato shocker

according to an email from Guinness World Records received by the couple on Sunday, the Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture/SASA found the DNA sample taken showed the specimen was not a potato.

Instead, the 7.9kg tuber is a type of gourd.

For that reason, the Craig-Brown’s application for the World Records was disqualified.

A UK gardener has been Guinness-certified for growing the world's longest cucumber.

World's longest cucumber grown in Britain

An amateur gardener broke a Guinness World Record by growing a massive cucumber measuring 3 feet and 8.6 inches long.

Guinness World Records said Sebastian Suski, who is from Poland and now lives in Southampton, England, earned the record for longest cucumber when his harvested vegetable was confirmed to be 2.5 inches longer than the previous record-holder. ...

"I'd grown big cucumbers but never quite long enough to beat the existing Guinness World Records title holder," Suski told Guinness World Records.

"Growing super-long cucumbers is a risky business," he said. "If you cut too soon, you're not going to have a record-breaker, but if you leave it too long, you get into the danger zone. You risk your cucumber rotting as it grows -- you don't want it exploding on you!"

Suski said he nearly missed out on the record when he had to be hospitalized while growing the big vegetable.

"Doctor found a leaking blood vessel in in my head and so I spent a week in hospital. But luckily my wife, Renata, was on hand to care for the cucumber and keep her well-watered and nourished. Without Renata, I wouldn't have this record" ...
