Nunanda?

This is something I remember from the Unexplained magazine back at the beginning of the 80s. There was an article about some type of ape that had been discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, I think, or maybe the late 19th century. The name that has been stuck in my head since I read about it is Nunanda, but obviously that's wrong as it doesn't show up on any google search, nor do any variations I can think of, Nanunda, Nannunda, etc.

I was about ten at the time so maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I remember the photo was of a dead ape being propped up with a stick or something to face the camera. It had large black eyes and the picture really freaked me out at the time for some reason. I think the jist of the story was that the photo was a hoax but I'm not sure.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? I'd like to see the picture again.

You're absolutely right. Thanks a million. I had a further look on google and came up with a link with the photo I remember

I don't know why that freaked me out so much, it's just a monkey.

I think it's the way the eyes follow you around the room...

The next question is where the hell did I get the name Nunanda from? I've always associated the name with that picture. Must be going senile.

Maybe it's another story you mixed it up with? Or simply a misremembering of Venezuela?

I wonder if you read about the ape in Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World?

In the same chapter there is a piece about a mystery big cat called something like the Nunanda (the spelling was different but it is similar to how it would have been pronounced). Is this what you are thinking of?

Edit: here we go, the Mngwa or Nunda:

Or possibly the Nandi Bear, which as hairy monsters go is actually quite feasible (obviously thought to be a bear and not an ape, nonetheless for years it tended to be lumped in with yetis, yowies and sasquatches in non-specialist articles about cryptids.)

Incidentally Nandi Bar would be a good name for a chocolate bar.

Yeah, maybe I'm mixing up a few things. Mysterious World was around the same time, early 80s, wasn't it?. I know I got the name from something cryptoid, could have sworn it was a monkey type thing though. But yeah, maybe I'm mixing up unexplained and mysterious world, it was a long time ago.

I too remember seeing this pic when I was a kid and it freaking me out! In fact, I think that it was maybe this pic that got me interested in Cryptozoology in the first place. For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it though, all I know was that it must have been in the mid-eighties in a book somewhere. Very interesting seeing this blast from the past anyway :D

You probably saw it in the same place as me then. Wherever it was, it was a full page picture. I think I even remember having nightmares about it.

I've still got a copy of that at home, and yes, the photo is definitely in there.

Great book, by the way, but there's one funny picture in there that I could never work out. It claims to be a photo taken underwater of some giant creature, but it's just murk and gloom, and however hard I stare at it, there's absolutely nothing to be seen. I always wondered if ACC was having a little joke at the readers' expense with that one!

Are you thinking ogf the Rines photo of 1972? Look at the top of the photo, the lighter area is the bodytwo stubs for flippers/feet, with the arch of a neck ending in a head (allegedly)

Perhaps you misrememberd the term "monogrande" ?
Referring to a large mystery ape, it is often used for this type of thing
in south america and other spanish speaking countries IIRC.

I could swear blind that the word I remember is Nunanda. I am 100% positive, which just goes to show that memory, no matter how clear it seems, can always play tricks on you. I wonder how much else I have misremembered and don't realise. Maybe I should start a new thread ;)
