Oh, The Irony

I used to review science fiction books for SFX magazine from the late 1990s for a decade or so, and the number of typos rose steadily over that period.

One magazine I worked for printed 'Britian' in very large letters on the cover rather than Britain. I hasten to say that this was after I left... as was 'prostrate cancer', which also made the cover.

Reminds me of a classic exchange between Tim and his girlfriend Sophie in Spaced (from memory):

Sophie: “l have to go in to work, it’s an emergency; there’s been a spelling mistake in the title of one of our magazines.”

Tim (suspicious): “Which one?”

Sophie: “Total Cult.”

Perhaps they are going to form the 'what not to do' committee?

It's a conundrum innit. These countries have poor human rights records so you'd think they'd be either unwelcome or not interested.

Why do they want to join? They might be strong enough to outvote more progressive members and wreck what progress has been made.
Hoping they toe the line and stop abusing the human rights of their own populations is a little optimistic.

Bit baffling how that happened. The author would have most likely sent a word processor file and the publisher should have used proof readers and an editor. But they don't seem to spend money on such fripperies these days.
I started my career as a proofreader and a type spec'er in 1980. All sorts of composition shops and publishers used us. But as it's cheaper to not pay for the frippery, I was out of a job by 2013.

That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. Curse the publishing industry and their stupidity!
Sorry to hear that GerdaWordyer.

Texas man records himself drinking behind wheel minutes before fatal crash

A Texas man posted a video of himself drinking behind the wheel on Facebook live just minutes before crashing his car — killing all three of his passengers.

Camilo Morejon, 47, could be seen swigging a bottle of beer while traveling in a silver Honda with his girlfriend and two others in Jersey Village on Sunday.

In the video, Morejon, speaking in Spanish, boasted that he drives better when he drinks, KPRC-TV reported, citing prosecutors.

Less than ten minutes later, Morejon then crashed into a black pickup truck, killing his passengers, the report said.

Morejon and the driver of the pickup truck suffered serious injuries.

The crash was caught on camera, according to the report, and shows Morejon speeding before the collision.

Morejon was charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.

So that must be a mirror image film then, cos otherwise he's in a RHD car.

Reversed, if you look at the writing on his shirt you can see it’s a mirror image. Som ephone cams do this when you’re shooting with them.

Especially when your thought process is a$$ backwards.

There is at least one video, which went viral, in which an Eastern-European? Thelma & Louise-type pair, take live videos of their vodka-swilling, as they speed along. Horns sound, brakes shriek, collision avoided, car overturns. Phone goes on recording the ominous dripping in the otherwise-silent, inverted car for several minutes, as witnesses gather - bravely - to enquire into the wellbeing of the pair inside. Both deceased. :(

I saw it first on LiveLeak but I think I have also encountered it in some ghoulish compilation on Youtube.

At least they took no one with them, iirc.

Latex gloves are among the personal protective equipment (PPE) used to help contain the spread of COVID-19. The world's largest maker of these gloves is shutting down because of the prevalence of COVID-19 infections among its workforce.
Major PPE Maker Shuts Factories After Nearly 2,500 Workers Test Positive For Covid-19

Top Glove, the world’s largest manufacturer of latex gloves, will shut down more than half its factories after nearly 2,500 of its workers tested positive for Covid-19 amidst a surge in demand for its gloves, a key part of personal protective gear.

Of the nearly 5,800 workers the Malaysian company has tested so far, 2,453 have tested positive for Covid-19, the BBC reported, citing the company.

In an official statement, the company said it has temporarily stopped production in 16 of its facilities in the badly hit Meru region, while its remaining 12 facilities in the area have been operating at “reduced capacities.

The company plans to close down 28 of its 41 plants in Malaysia in phases as it attempts to curb the spread of the virus among its workforce, the BBC report added.

On Monday, the Malaysian health ministry reported a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in the region where Top Glove’s factories and worker dormitories are located. ...

They're still constructing it and will probably add drainage channels to the land at some point.
One would hope so. However such measures have often been overlooked in the past.
Like building on flood plains: who'd have thought the houses would get flooded? The image, though, is certainly ironic.

Channel 4 news have been following this company recently & have broadcast video from inside. Conditions there for workers are grim, they sleep in extremely overcrowded dormitories with bunk beds, hardly any space between them, queue up for food in canteen with no distancing whatsoever, rubbish piled up outside living quarters, work all the hours possible, for a pittance.

Years ago Universities and Research labs moved away from powdered gloves (corn starch) to powder-free and then from latex gloves to nitrile ones due to increasing cases of sensitivity and allergies. The final push for my Department came after 2004 when a hospital nurse won £350,000 compensation for a latex glove allergy*. Ironically the only people I've heard now using latex routinely are Surgeons and the NHS.

A leading United States Catholic church figure, who has slammed the Irish government's Deputy Leader Leo Varadkar for being gay, attacked Irish clergy as weak, and dismissed decades of sex abuse scandals in Ireland's Catholic Church as "peripheral", is being investigated for sexual assault, after a church worker allegedly filmed him watching gay pornography.

Father George Rutler had made the comments about Fine Gael's Leo Varadkar, in March 2019, on EWTN, the global Catholic network, and slammed Ireland’s then-leader for “publicly living in perverse contempt for the sacrament of holy matrimony.”

The accusation comes from Ashley Gonzalez, a 22-year-old security guard who had just been hired as an overnight security guard by Rutler. She alleges that on Nov 4, at around 1.20 am, Rutler forcibly groped her, after she had filmed him late at night watching hardcore homosexual pornography on an office computer in the church rectory. The incident took place during Gonzalez’s second night on the job. ...
