Olympics Oddness

Tom has already asked if, at the next Olympics, they can introduce 'speed knitting' as a new sport.

I wonder why he knitted a very tiny woman on top of his right shoulder.

I believe he's an architect and his bite is worse than his B.Arch.

An Olympic gold medallist will be given a new medal after the mayor of her hometown chomped on the first.

Takashi Kawamura, mayor of Japanese city Nagoya, sparked fury online when he lowered his mask and bit on softball athlete Miu Goto's medal at an event. He was accused of ignoring Covid-19 restrictions and "lacking respect".

Now, Olympic officials say they will swap Ms Goto's medal for an untarnished one, after the mayor apologised and said he would pay for a replacement.

The mayor faced a backlash after putting the medal between his teeth at a ceremony last week to celebrate Japan's victory over the USA in the women's softball final. Social media users said the act was unhygienic and impolite towards the athlete.

The mayor is trying to make amends.

The mayor of Nagoya, Japan is sorry for biting softball pitcher Miu Goto's Olympic gold medal, and will forego $13,000 of his pay as a form of self-punishment.

From Insider:

According to Kyodo News, Kawamura was also accused of sexually harassing Goto, making remarks at the time such as: "Are you prohibited from having romantic relationships?"
The Nagoya government has received more than 7000 complaints about Kawamura's behaviour, while Toyota, the Japanese car manufacturer which owns the softball team Goto plays for, also called his acts "inappropriate" and "extremely regrettable."

Was he framed?

The only person held legally responsible for the team of basketball cheats who faked their way to Paralympic gold at Sydney 2000 now denies he knew anything about it. Speaking for the first time since his conviction in 2013, he says the accusations against him were "absurd and unfounded".

It's described by some as the worst example of cheating in sporting history. After Spain's intellectual disability basketball team won gold at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, it emerged that just two out of the squad of 12 players genuinely had a disability.

The scandal led to a total ban on athletes with an intellectual disability from the 2004 and 2008 Paralympics, destroying the careers of thousands of sportspeople around the world.

The man found by a Spanish court to have "devised and executed" the plot to recruit talented young non-disabled basketball players was Fernando Martín Vicente, then president of the Spanish Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disability (Feddi) and vice-president of the Spanish Paralympic Committee.

When he accepted responsibility for the fraud and a fine of 5,400 euros (£4,600), charges were dropped against 18 other defendants, including the 10 fake Paralympians.

A mere autograph wasn't enough for American tourist Carla de Vries at the 1936 Olympics - so she leant over a barrier to give Hitler a kiss.

Although Der Führer appeared to laugh it off at the time, the rumour is that his security guards were either demoted or sacked after the incident.

Are you sure she tried to kiss Hitler, or kill him? If only she'd done the latter...
