Oops! The Silly Mistakes Thread

Lately UPI's 'Odd News' section has consisted of innocuous OOP animals stories. During the last few months there have been a lot of 'bear entering and trashing the family car' stories.

This one stands out from the rest ... The owner / driver is the one who inadvertently shut the bear up within her van. Somehow she didn't notice there was a bear inside. Hence my posting this in the Silly Mistakes thread ...

Bear ransacks van, raids kitchen in North Carolina
A North Carolina woman who unknowingly closed a bear inside her van said the bruin escaped through a window and raided a neighbor's kitchen.

Nicole Minkin Lissenden said she was visiting her parents' house in Asheville while they were out of town during the weekend.

Lissenden said the doors of her 2008 Honda Odyssey had been left unlocked and a friend who was passing by stopped to tell her the door was open and there was trash on the ground next to her vehicle.

The woman said it wasn't until after she had closed the door that she realized a bear was inside.

"I certainly didn't think it was in the car, so I closed the door at that point and went back inside," Lissenden told the Asheville Citizen Times. "About 30 minutes later, I went back out to get something out of the car, and I noticed all the windows were fogged up and there were paw prints on the windows." ...

An airline has had to send a plane back to the paint shop after the company's name was spelled incorrectly on it.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific painted its name as "Cathay Paciic" on the side of the jet.

Nearly $18m in cocaine found in boxes of bananas donated to Texas prison

The two pallets of bananas were donated because they were already ripe, the DCJ said, and arrived on Friday from Ports of America in Freeport.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (DCJ) outlined the find in a surprisingly jaunty Facebook post which began: “Sometimes, life gives you lemons. Sometimes, it gives you bananas. And sometimes, it gives you something you’d never expect!”

“One of the boxes felt different than the others,” the DCJ said. “[Officials] snipped the straps, pulled free the box, and opened it up.

“Inside, under a bundle of bananas … another bundle! Inside that? What appeared to be a white powdery substance. They immediately notified port authorities and awaited their instruction.”

The pallets turned out to contain “quite the cache”, the DCJ said: 540 packages of cocaine in 45 boxes of bananas, “with an estimated street value of $17,820,000” .

..But at least they're grammatically correct...

In which universe ?

Let's hope the manufacturer of these cushions doesn't publish atlases as a sideline:

A naive poltergeist(?) thought it would be helpful to change the alignment of the letters on the fabric pillows so they could be read (clockwise) to yield the only relevant message they could thus spell out - i.e., 'SEWN'.

I hadn't thought of that!

Assume this is from Asia. Not sure it's the up-to-date model.

If you type in the phrase 'only God can judge my mistakes and truths' into Google translate.

Convert it into Turkish, then back to English. you get.

..only Allah can judge my mistakes and facts..

Of course, that would not stop the clerics from stoning her to death.

'Just doing God's work'.

Doesn't anyone else think the tattoo - and hence the photo - looks a little too 'perfect', and therefore wonder whether this could be another attention-grabbing hoax like the Iranian woman Sahar Tabar who claimed deformity from plastic surgeries intended to make her look like Angelina Jolie?

Can't rule that out. (Posing with the begloved tattoo artist suggests it's fresh - doesn't tattooing make the skin red and inflamed?)

Yup, that's not a fresh tattoo. It'd be red round the edges. Also, it's a big job to be done in one sitting, so part would be red and part not. Hoax.

If you look really closely at that shapely thigh (with a magnifying glass), you will see that there is a very feint 'halo' around the letters.

It is a photo-shopped image.

Shopper’s shock as couple accidentally upload their sex photos in packed Doncaster supermarket

A couple were left red-faced – after accidentally uploading a stash of their explicit sex pictures to a computer in front of shocked shoppers at a Doncaster supermarket. The couple inadvertently shared more than a dozen raunchy snaps in the Bawtry Road branch of Asda yesterday afternoon – and were left frantically trying to delete the pictures as other shoppers looked on.

Stink bombs, not gas leaks.

Paisley’s town centre and train station were evacuated by emergency services responding to a gas scare that is now thought to have been caused by a stink bomb.

The pungent stench erupted in The Last Post, a JD Wetherspoon pub close to the Scottish town’s railway station, shortly after 8pm last night.

JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gorshon told BBC Scotland that the smell of a “gas substance” was noticed by a member of staff, who alerted the pub manager.

“The gas engineer arrived and he concluded that it was not a gas leak. The manager was told to keep everyone out of the building,” Gershon said.

“At around 21.30 the fire brigade and police arrived and begin to set up a cordon around the entire pub and shut Paisley Gilmour street train station.”

This is tragic

Man dies 8 years after swallowing garden slug as a dare at party

Mr Barker was taken to hospital after spells of dizziness and vomiting. He was found to have been infected with rat lungworm, a parasite normally found in rats but also sometimes in snails and slugs.

The teenager then contracted eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, a form of meningitis, and lapsed into a coma for 420 days before doctors revived him.

But when he woke he was diagnosed with a serious brain injury. Further complications from the original infection left him paralysed and in need of constant care.

“Sam was 19, and in a single night, his life had changed forever,”

“While doctors had managed to save him in time, he was now confined to a wheelchair, with limited communication skills, and needing 24 hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week care.”

“His friends have stuck by him ever since. On Friday, Sam passed away, surrounded by his family and loyal, loving mates.”
