Oops! The Silly Mistakes Thread

I'd rather have a pony myself.

BMWs are the ones manufactured without indicators.
They only seem that way, darling GNC, because the people who drive BMWs are often idiots who wouldn't think of using indicators.
When I was young, people (in America) who drove Volvos had the reputation of being very bad and stupid drivers. From what I saw of BMW drivers at that time, they were the fancy version of the stereotypical Volvo driver. You either dodged a bullet, Escargot, or things are very different in the UK.

Pfft, if anyone who know me saw me driving such a car they'd call the police because I'd've obviously been kidnapped and brainwashed.

It used to be Volvos in the UK too - then it was BMW drivers, now it's Audi drivers who get the most stick I think.

Not sure if we even have many Audis over here. We are behind the times.

I'll just leave this here...

A mis-identified gorilla in Barrow:
"Witnesses to the incident claimed that the gorilla was conducting lewd behaviour in the road."
I would think that being dressed in a gorilla suit would make it difficult to do anything that could be mistaken as lewd.

Fortunately, this mistake didn't lead to a conflagration ... According to the story at the 2nd link below, he'd pumped circa 30 gallons of gasoline onto the boat before realizing his error.

Florida man mistakenly pumps gas onto the deck of his boat

Mistakenly inserting a fuel nozzle into a fishing pole slot, a Florida man pumped $60 worth of gasoline onto the deck of his boat and the ground of a gas station, fire rescue officials said.

The incident happened Monday in the Orlando area, Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said on Twitter.

The gas flowed from the fishing pole hole and onto the deck of the 24-foot (7.3 meters) boat. The 31-year-old man realized his mistake and quit pumping.

As he tried to clean up the mess, the gasoline began leaking from the boat onto the ground at the 7-Eleven store. He told personnel and then called the fire department’s non-emergency number, Jachles said.

A technical rescue team siphoned the gas from the boat and cleaned up. The situation was described as a “level 3 hazmat,” meaning the potential of hazard was high, Jachles said.

It's bad enough to have a creditor send you a "pay up" letter. It's really bad when the creditor issues 55,000 copies of the letter all at once ...
Family gets 55,000 duplicate letters from loan company

An Ohio man is pondering what to do with the 55,000 duplicate statements addressed to his home by a student loan company.

Dan Cain said he was suspicious when a postal worker in Twinsburg, Ohio, told him recently that his mail wouldn’t fit through the front door of the office. When Cain drove his truck around to the back of the building, he found a postal worker wheeling out two large bins of letters, WOIO-TV reported.

It turned out that there were a total of 79 bins of the letters, and it took Cain two trips to deliver them to the garage of his family’s home in the city roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland.

Officials from College Ave Student Loans said in an email Monday that it apologized for the error in its mailing system and was putting corrective measures in place to prevent it from happening in the future.

“We are working with Dan directly on a remedy, including picking up the mail from him if possible and a statement credit for the inconvenience,” the company’s chief operating officer, Tim Staley, said.

“I just hope it doesn’t happen again,” Cain said. “I might just have to return to sender.”

The duplicate statements were for a loan Cain and his wife had taken out for college tuition, Cain said. He also indicated that the statement was wrong and believed the company used the wrong interest rate to calculate the payment. ...

How is that possible? I know robots are supposed to be taking over all our jobs nowadays but is there really no human input in printing out, putting into envelopes and posting off all those letters? Or did some underpaid worker sit there doing 55, 000 identical envelopes without saying a word to their supervisor?

There may not have been any envelope stuffing involved, and yes - the letter production process can be fully automated.

It's now common (at least in the USA) for notices and bills to be printed out on a single sheet of paper. One side has the printed content. The other side has the sender's address and postage markings, onto which the recipient's address is printed. These are printed in a continuous feed. Each sheet has adhesive (either pre-installed or added after printing) and perforations along both sides. Once the double-sided printing is done, the sheet is cut off individually, then folded and sealed to make a workable / post-able "letter." The recipient simply tears off the sealed ends at the perforations and opens up the letter.

I note, in the 'what's new' list we have..

'Did Mr Belvedere sit on his testicles'

Followed by

'Folk horror'

Followed by ..

'Bright flashers of light'.

A sort of logical progression.

And definitely worthy of being a 'silly mistake'.

Fife couple forced to flee home as attempt to unblock toilet leaves dog coughing
February 10 2020, 8.37am

A Fife couple had to flee their home when two cleaning products used to unblock their loo reacted and caused a chemical incident.

Specialist firefighters wearing hazmat suits were drafted in after Iain Smith tried to fix the toilet in the Glenrothes house he shares with wife Shareem using bleach then drain cleaner.
The toxic combination produced such a noxious gas he and Shareem had to leave the house in Bilsland Path North with their two dogs, one of which had started coughing.
Iain was later taken to Victoria Hospital, in Kirkcaldy, for checks but released with a clean bill of health.
Shareem said: “We’ll get the plumber out next time.”

Credit extended to all OAPs accompanied by their grandparents.

A 101-year-old Italian man who has been in London since 1966 was asked to get his parents to confirm his identity by the Home Office after he applied to stay in the country post-Brexit.

In what appears to be a computer glitch the Home Office thought he was a one-year-old child. Giovanni Palmiero was told that he needed the presence of his mother and father when he made his application for the EU settlement scheme at an advice centre in Islington, north London. When the volunteer who helped Palmiero, a great-grandfather, scanned his passport into the EU settled status app to share the biometric data with the Home Office, the system misinterpreted his birth year as 2019 instead of 1919.

WHOA! Huge trailer stands straight up in unusual crash

Police in Indiana shared a peculiar photo of a truck trailer that ended standing straight up and causing an accident.

A semitruck driver accidentally activated controls for a dump trailer he was carrying Wednesday night, which caused it to stand upright, according to the Indiana State Police.

The empty dump trailer then struck an overpass and disconnected. It ended up in the middle of a highway in Crown Point, Indiana, about 50 miles southeast of Chicago.

The roadway stayed closed for roughly three hours for cleanup and bridge inspection.

The driver was not hurt.

Unusual grooming style led people in Spain to report this dog as a lion wandering around town ...
Reported loose lion was unusually groomed dog in Spain

Police said the dog was microchipped and they contacted its owner for a reunion with the escaped pet.
