Used to be a treat when going up to Skye - break the journey in ?Plockton and enjoy the scenery.
We had a family cottage very near there when I was growing up very near Plockton!

It was a village called Duirnish.

Fantastic and beautiful place. I miss it loads.

I don't normally call "silly mistake" on animals, but this seems to be a case justifying the call. :evillaugh:
Mountain lion crashes through window into California home

Authorities in Northern California said a mountain lion broke through a window and entered a home after apparently confusing some taxidermy heads for live prey.

The San Bruno Police Department said the cougar broke through a window of the San Bruno home about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday. ...

"It is believed that the mountain lion entered the residence because of several large game, taxidermy trophy heads, mounted on the interior walls of the residence," police said in a news release.

The homeowner scared the animal and it left through the same window. There were no injuries reported. ...

More Zoom shenanigans

Quebec MP William Amos identified himself on Twitter after screenshots of a naked man who appeared during a Question Period stream were leaked online

Whether he's also taking dick pics is uncertain.

William Amos appeared naked during the Zoom call
He's at it again:

Canadian politician caught on camera urinating during virtual Parliament session, just weeks after nudity incident

I'm assuming this was another Zoom incident.

William Amos said the incident occurred on Wednesday while he was "attending House of Commons proceedings virtually in a non-public setting."

"I urinated without realizing I was on camera," he said in a statement posted on Twitter, adding that he was "deeply embarrassed" by his actions.

"While accidental and not visible to the public, this was completely unacceptable, and I apologize unreservedly," Amos said.

"I will be stepping aside temporarily from my role as Parliamentary Secretary and from my committee duties so that I can seek assistance," Amos said.

He added that he would continue to serve as an MP.

An Argentinian news reader make an ass of themself, declaring William Shakespear, the bard, has just died, rather that Bill Shakespear, the first man to recieve the Pfizer vaccine.

"One man in his time really does play many parts, it seems, according to an Argentine newsreader who mixed up the author William Shakespeare with the first man to receive a Pfizer jab.

Canal 26 presenter Noelia Novillo announced that "one of the most important writers in the English language - for me the master" had died.

In fact it was his namesake, William "Bill" Shakespeare, 81, who died in a hospital in England earlier this week.

Shakespeare "The Bard" died in 1616."

A proper foxes paw.

A world-famous Irish fabric business inadvertently attracted the ire of online animal welfare activists on Sunday after they mistook an abbreviation of the store’s name on a product label — “Fox” — to mean that the item was made from fox fur.

The historic Foxford Woollen Mills shop and visitor centre in Mayo was bombarded with messages from activists after the Irish Party for Animal Welfare (IPAW) shared a post featuring a photograph of a woman’s stole or long scarf from the store.

Founded in Foxford, Co Mayo, in 1892, the company specialises in designing luxury hand-woven clothing and soft furnishings.
The photo posted on Facebook showed a product label reading “FOX PORM-POMS STOLE”, and was accompanied by the message: “Why does Foxford Woollen Mills have to sell a wrap with fox fur pompoms? ...

Fearing a drone above thier training ground was from rival football team Argentina, the Chilean national team downed the drone with one of their own.
Only it was from a Chilean energy company.

"As football rivalries go, the one between Chile and Argentina is up there among the fiercest.

So it should come as no surprise that when Chile's national team saw a drone hovering above a training session, it suspected its rival of spying ahead of Thursday's World Cup qualifier.

The team sent up its own drone which swiftly brought down the "spy-cam".

But rather than being a devious Argentine device, the drone turned out to be from a Chilean energy company."

A pool has been forced to close after blue paint came off on children.

"A paddling pool on the Isle of Wight has been forced to close just days after opening after its blue paint came off onto children's skin.

The pool, on East Cowes Esplanade, opened at the weekend following a revamp including repainting.

East Cowes Town Council has apologised to those affected and said the paint was "in no way harmful".

It added it could be removed from skin or clothing using soap and water and an exfoliating glove."

A round Britain walker had to be rescued, just 3 miles into her trek.

"A woman on a round-Britain coastal walk had to be rescued by lifeboat crews after getting cut off by the tide, just three miles into her trek.

The 28-year-old woman from Coventry set off on Tuesday and was rescued from a Somerset beach the same day.

She had strayed off the official cliff path for the South West Coast Path and was on a beach 800ft (243m) below it.

An RNLI spokesman, said: "She was carrying an enormous backpack, how she managed to get so far I have no idea.""

Well, here's another fine cock-up by a trusted media source ...

... Or was it really a cock-up at all? :thought:
‘Rise of fruit aliens’: NYT retracts article claiming watermelons were found on Mars, netizens react with memes

Amid immense interest in space explorations and presence of life beyond the Earth, people were left in a frenzy after a New York Times report claimed “Fields of Watermelons Found On Mars”. Although the American news organisation was quick to delete the article and calling it an error, it didn’t stop netizens from having a blast online.

On Tuesday afternoon, the article appeared on site attributing the claim to the police. “Authorities say rise of fruit aliens is to blame for glut of outer space watermelons,” read the story, which was deleted less than an hour later. However, it got indexed on Google News.

“The FBI declined to comment on reports of watermelons raining down, but confirmed that kiwis have been intercepted. This story is terribly boring,” the story read, according to screenshots going viral across social media platforms. “Watermelon taste good, police say,” the report added.

A former employ guessed that it might have been some backend error while testing out some new feature on the website and it might have got published by mistake. Turns out, he was right. ...

According to a report by Futurism, a spokesperson of the New York Times clarified it was meant for just testing purposes. “Earlier today, a mock article intended for a testing system was published on our site in error,” the spokesperson was quoted. “The article has since been removed,” she added. ...

Watermelons require a LOT of water, so I'm calling this one a bust.

Shooting yourself in the hand while cleaning your gun is a silly enough mistake to make. The even sillier (and more serious) mistake is lying (repeatedly!) to the police about where and how you got the gunshot wound.
Police investigate after Pownal man shoots himself in hand

A Pownal man faces charges after he shot himself in the hand and then lied about it to the police.

... John Wallner, 34, of Pownal, was treated at an Amsterdam, New York, hospital for a gunshot wound to his hand.

Wallner initially claimed he was shot in New York, but then said he was shot in Pownal, near Barber Pond. He also claimed he didn’t realize he was wounded, thinking it was possibly a bee sting. Police say Wallner lied several times about the incident before finally admitting he shot himself while cleaning his gun.

At this time, it’s believed the shooting did not occur in Vermont, but police continue to investigate. Wallner faces charges of giving false information to law enforcement.

To me as a Brit, this is rather incomprehensible.

People in America can generally own guns and there are accidents with them, some more serious than others.

I'm making two assumptions here: that gunshot wounds treated by medical professionals have to be reported to the police as is this the case in certain places*, and that the weapon is a handgun.

So the patient has a gunshot injury and the police are informed and arrive to question him, and in embarrassment he lies to them.
But he needn't lie about owning or shooting the gun as they are legal activities.

He is however in breach of the law for giving false information to law enforcement.
(One suspects this is because he has wasted police time.)

Here's the big difference: in the UK everything he did with that gun would be illegal because we are just not allowed them.
Brits can own sporting rifles and shotguns, subject to licensing, but not handguns.

*This is why the Mafia have their own 'Mob doctors' to call on, a custom used to humorous effect in The Sopranos where the best the Wise Guys can do when Furio suffers a potentially serious wound to the thigh is treatment by a urologist/erectile dysfunction specialist.

Patient (having bullet removed and wound stitched without anaesthetic) 'Aaarrgh! Is this prick a doctor?'
Erectile dysfunction specialist: (drily) 'Close, I'm a 'prick' doctor!'

Just out of curiosity - could any Americans reading this tell me what you think the law is regarding having guns of any sort here in the UK?
I only ask because quite often (not on the FTMB mind) I see comments from American citizens which give the impression that they think that here in the UK we are for some reason allowed to have handguns, or firearms in general, and/or that the police are all armed, similar to in the US.

There are thousands of metric shit-tons of mis- and dis-information believed by Murricans. A great deal of that claptrap is about gun laws in other countries, along with imaginary consequences of them. One does not have to look hard to find the sources of the bullshit. People here are so stupid and lazy when it comes to figuring out what to believe, it's depressing. Most just accept whatever spills out of their favorite channels of "information", often TV or Farcebook. Whatever agrees with, or even better reinforces, their established opinions is just accepted as true. This is, of course, the opposite of intelligence. Trying to reason with the dolts is like arguing with a flat Earther.

I'm going outside now, so I can think about something else.

95% correct.

Certain categories of ordinary people can own certain types of handgun, e.g.:

a) Black powder, muzzle-loading handguns can be owned on a Firearm Certificate.

b) Deer stalkers, for example, are legally allowed to own metallic cartridge handguns (the kind everyone here is thinking about) for humane destruction of injured deer, though few pursue this option.

c) Air pistols (muzzle energy up to 6ft-lbs.) are free for anyone over 18 to purchase. Over 6ft-lbs. you’d require an FAC (see above).

My son does target shooting at a club using real ammo - they have competitions down at Bisley.
He doesn't need a licence for the rifle that he uses but he does need to register it. And Ammo has to be stored separately in a locked enclosure, whether that be a designated room, or a case, and he is limited to only that which he will need for target shooting practices, and that usually appears to mean about 72 rounds. I'm not 100% cetrain on the rules and regs but as I recall that is fairly close to correct. But put me right if I'm way off there cos TBH I haven't taken much interest since I stopped taking him to the club which was about 7 years ago, cos he drives himself now.

You can't even own a water pistol or toy Colt 45 if you're going to 'open carry' them in case someone spots you with it, panics and calls the police. This has happened.

5his is why in the late 80's or early 90's toy manufacturers started making toy guns in bright colours rather than the traditional gun metal grey/nickle plate

Don’t Athletic Olympic shooters get to own handguns?

I'm an American and I do not comprehend the attitude toward gun laws here among people who believe it is unconstitutional to limit their access to military grade weapons. But then, I'm one of those "anarchist" "socialists" who wants to destroy the country by having universal health care.

Alas, this isn't enough to protect certain children from being shot and killed by some police officers.

Kudos to Britain for not needing to arm all their police officers or clad them in body armor like we do here. :(
