Orang Pendek / Orang Dalam / Sedapa [South-East Asia]

This all seems to have gone very quiet for the orang pendek which is a shame and with Horizon throwing some doubt on the hobbit in flores it seems that Cryptozoology is losing its two main talking points. Poo :?

(The motto of Horizon seems to be "for every expert there is an equal and opposite expert")

There was one 'expert' on horizon who was claiming that Hflo couldn't possibly be anything but a deseased Hsap because there were tools associated with Hsap found at the grave site. "No small brained creature could have made these tools!" he exclaimed hautilly presenting what he thought was the killer argument. Except it's not because some of the natives have spoken about how occasionally the little people from the mountains would come to their villages on the rob. If thease tales did have a grain of truth then a logical eplanation of there being advanced tools there is that the Hflo tribes might have nicked them from any Hsap tribes that might have been using them locally. There is no evidence of the Hflo actully useing the tools that had been found with them, they would have looked desireable to a not very clever bunch of robbers because the Hsap would have probably tryed to stop the Hflo nicking them because it takes quite a bit of skilled craftsmanship to make a good tool.

So perhaps not such a killer argument had the 'expert' bothered to take into account other possibilitys rather than rushing in headlong hoping to get fame and fortune as the man who disproved Hflo's species claim. Of course other theorys as to why there may have been tools asoicied with where the first Hflo bones were found were not even mentioned in passing on the horizon program

Hi there folks,

As you may or may not be aware, we've now run two expeditions to search for Orang Pendek, in '01 and '04. The '01 expedition hit the headlines all over the world, with the '04 expedition doing the same, both producing substantial evidence for Orang Pendek. Our website is at www.extreme-expeditions.net and we've just posted the results of the hair and footprint analysis that has been ongoing for the past three years at this link:

Hope you visit it and you find it informative, as ever, all comments welcome.

Best regards.

I see two main problems with this argument.

One: Chimpanzees use tools, and the H. Flo. brain is a similar size.

Two: Some species of bird make and use tools, and they have brains that are much smaller and less complicated than ours.

Of course, none of them make anything as complicated as the tools found with H. Flor., but then again H. Flor. is a hominid, and may, as Oll points out, have had access to tools made by H. Sap. When you consider that monkeys and chimpanzees can learn how to perform reasonably complicated tasks through mimicry, the idea of H. Flor. having and using tools seems less ludicrous.

'Bigfoot' hunt begins after Malaysian jungle sighting

AUTHORITIES began searching the jungles of southern Malaysia yesterday for the mythical "Bigfoot", following a reported sighting of three giant human-like beasts, officials said.

Wildlife authorities said that they may set up cameras in the 309sq mile Endau Rompin National Park in Johor state to see if the creatures exist.

Hashim Yusof, the park's director, ventured into the jungle yesterday to survey the site where three fish-farm workers reportedly saw the beasts - two adults and a younger creature - last month, his secretary said.

The fish-farm workers were in the jungle to clear an area for a fish pond. They alerted their employer who photographed what appeared to be footprints measuring up to 45cm in length, said Lim Teong Kheng, the chairman of the Malaysian Nature Society in Johor.

He said brown hair reeking of body odour was also reportedly retrieved nearby, and a broken tree branch at the site appeared to indicate the creatures were some three metres (10ft) tall.

On Thursday, the New Straits Times newspaper reprinted one of the photographs, showing what appears to be a triangular depression in the undergrowth.

Read about this in the newspaper today. Any word if if that hair sample will be tested? Can't belong to a yak this time, surely?

Closing in on Bigfoot, foreign media set to descend on Johor

It could be the biggest spoof of the year, but not everyone is scoffing at reported sightings of "Bigfoot" in the dense jungles of Kota Tinggi.

Television stations and journalists from around the world are expected to descend on Johor over the next few weeks to track the elusive creature.

It is learnt that BBC London has made preliminary enquiries, while several international magazines have also contacted tour agents here and in Singapore to cover the story.

The Johor National Parks Corporation (JNPC) has also been inundated with calls by journalists from around the world.

"Telephone calls and emails from media organisations have been pouring in ever since news of Bigfoot was published," said JNPC director Mohamed Hashim Yusoff.

A Singapore-based paranormal activity group had contacted JNPC to help track down the creature.

Researchers and trackers are also excited about the latest alleged sightings.

"They all want to know if Bigfoot is for real," said Hashim, adding that the TV crews and reporters were keen to venture into the forests of Johor to interview the Orang Asli who had reported seeing the ape-like animal.

As some of the sightings were in gazetted national parks, the State Government will scrutinise all applications before media teams are allowed to enter the protected areas.

The whole thing will probably turn out to be a publicity stunt to attract the tourists.

I hope not though.

Sort of a Loch Ness tourism thing you mean? I wonder if they have the T-shirts printed up already?

I was in Malaysia, but sadly didn't go to Endau Rompin, but only another national park. As far as I know Endau Rompin is not all that big though, not really big enough for something like this to be undiscovered for long. Perhaps in the Borneo part of Malaysia, but can't imagine it in the peninsula part.

"Bigfoot" Excitement Mounting In Malaysia

Excitement is mounting in Malaysia over claims of "Bigfoots" lurking in its southern jungles, with wildlife experts on the hunt for the mythical beast and a telephone hotline set up to report sightings.
Bigfoot fever erupted last month when some fish farm workers claimed to have spotted three of the beasts -- two adults and a youngster -- on the edge of a forest reserve in southern Johor state.

Their improbable tale was lent some authority soon after when an Orang Asli -- an indigenous ethnic group known for their expertise in the jungle -- also said he had stumbled across one of the legendary ape-men.

"He saw the creature which was hairy and brownish in colour, it was about 12 feet (four metres) tall," said Johor National Parks director Hashim Yusoff. "It was not aggressive, but the Orang Asli was startled by the creature and ran away.

"My personal feeling is that there is a possibility it could be what we call in Malaysia the 'mawas' ... more of a primate," he said. "But we don't deny the sightings," he added, insisting that the Orang Asli "do not lie."

"We've got to prove it and we've got to do it scientifically."

Wildlife authorities have embarked on a quest to verify the claims, and are considering mounting camera traps to capture images of anything roaming the jungles.

After a month of fruitless searching and interviews with people living near the forests, a telephone hotline has now been set up for members of the public who claim to have seen the beast to relate their stories, Hashim said.

"Our main aim is to identify the information source, whether it is credible or not," he told AFP.

The Malaysian press has given prominent coverage to reports of sightings, including some which date back decades, and printed photographs of supposed footprints -- vague impressions in the mud and leaves on the jungle floor.

Johor is home to large tracts of jungle, including its famed Endau-Rompin National Park, and unconfirmed sightings of large creatures surface periodically there.

Former zoologist Amlir Ayat said this week that he had come close to finding proof of the existence of Bigfoot five years ago after villagers claimed to have shot a huge hairy creature in the jungles of neighbouring Pahang state.

"The creature fell to the ground with a great thud and the villagers took to their heels. Later, when they returned to check if it was dead, they found the body still lying there," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

Amlir said he was only told of the shooting a year later. He and the villagers mounted a search for the remains of the creature but found none.

"By then, loggers had moved into the site and cleared the ground," he said. "The evidence was gone."

Vincent Chow, an advisor to Johor's Malaysian Nature Society who has been lobbying the government to look into the claims, dismissed the sceptics who insist the "sightings" have been manufactured to lure tourists to Johor.

"There's a lot of excitement, a lot of people are coming in with their own stories," he said.

Sightings of mythical ape-like creatures have been reported in wilderness areas all over the world. They are known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch in the United States and Canada, and yetis in the Himalayas.

For what it is worth, during my time in Malaysia I got the impression malaysians are very honest people. And it has a lot to recommend tourists, making up stories like this shouldn't be necessary.

Hey I know alot of good people out that way around Roswell. 70 year old desert dwellers are a world apart from the 30 year old guys in the tourist shops on main street.

Bigfoot near Gunung Panti?

JOHOR BARU, Mon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The discovery of several huge footprints by a villager in Panti has caused a flurry of excitement among Bigfoot believers.

The 50cm-long footprints (inset, picture above) caused by a single creature that had apparently walked out of a muddy stretch of the jungle area, were found on a recently-tarred road leading to smallholdings located at the foot of Gunung Panti.

Bio-dioversity researcher Vincent Chow, who yesterday led a team of eight Bigfoot enthusiasts, including a professional from England, to investigate the footprints, said there was a strong possibility they were made by a Bigfoot creature.

"We traced the footprints up a hill and found more footprints on the muddy floor of the jungle. However, recent heavy rains have smudged the outline of the footprints.

"From their depth, we can judge that the creature which made them could have been about four times a man’s weight."

Chow said the manner in which the creature had traversed the jungle was humanlike.

"Except for a few broken twigs, there was no damage to the plants as the creature seemed to have followed the jungle path carefully, even ducking below thorny creepers. Had an elephant passed through the area, there would have been extensive damage to the vegetation."

Chow said he interviewed a villager who stated he was convinced that some creature had been prowling around the Kampung Temenim Lama area in Panti.

The villager said he heard pots and pans being moved about in his kitchen at the back of the house one night.

He was too scared to check the disturbances then, but in the morning he found the pots turned upside down and the rice spilt.

Meanwhile, a 68-year-old tanker lorry driver claimed he had a close encounter with a Bigfoot family in the 1990s on the Masai-Kong Kong road.

P. Palaniandy said he had left for Kulai after filling up his tanker with crude palm oil at a depot in Kong Kong about 8.30am.

"Just as I was going up a slope, I saw the creatures crossing the road in single file.

"They were going from the Masai side of the jungle to the Kong Kong side."

He said the creatures were between five feet and seven feet tall and heavily built. The long arms of the biggest creature were as thick as a man’s thigh.

Palaniandy said he slowed down and was about five metres away from the creatures when they walked into the jungle.

He said they had thick foreheads, bushy raised eyebrows, large protruding jaws, big hair-covered ears, raised chests and large protruding buttocks. The creatures did not turn to look at him.

Known as the orang dalam to the indigenous people of Malaysia, legends of this mysterious creature in many ways seem to be almost identical to stories of Bigfoot in North America. Said to stand between six and eight feet tall and give off a pungent odor, encounters with this jungle inhabitant have occurred with some frequency over the last 200 years.

Intrigued by the stories of the orang dalam, author and explorer Harold Stephens mounted an expedition in search of the creature in the early 1970’s. As recounted in “Return to Adventure Southeast Asia,” Stephens journeyed deep into a mostly unexplored part of the Malay jungle near to an area the orang dalam was said to inhabit.

Upon reaching their destination, the expedition discovered a game trail used by a variety of animals. Among the tracks they documented was a long series of enormous footprints 19 inches long and 10 inches wide. The native guides confidently identified the prints as those of the orang dalam.
They appear to be four-toed. Are they the tracks of the unknown hairy hominoid, the Orang Dalam from Malaysia? Or something else?

Malaysian government to hunt for "ape man"

Johor to mount hunt for 'bigfoot'
By Jonathan Kent
BBC correspondent in Kuala Lumpur

The ape man is thought to be hiding in the jungle
The government of the Malaysian state of Johor says it is to organise an attempt to track down a legendary ape man reputed to roam its jungles.

After a spate of sightings, Johor's chief minister says he will launch an official search for the beast, dubbed Malaysia's Big Foot by local media.

Malaysians have a long-standing love affair with anything big.

The obsessions resulted in record-breaking buildings, bridges, even piles of food.

Now they have gone crazy for Big Foot, known in local legend as Hantu Jarang Gigi - ghosts with widely spaced teeth.

The country has been gripped since November when three fishery workers claimed to have seen a Big Foot family that left footprints up to 45cm long.

Conservationists say that damage to branches suggested that the creatures could have been up to 3m tall.

There were similar sightings by members of the local indigenous minority who said they had seen a 'King Kong' covered in black fur.

Now, the chief minister of Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman, says a proper scientific expedition will track Big Foot's big foot-prints.

He is setting up two teams, one of which will scour likely locations, including the densely forested Endau Rompin National Park.

Mr Abdul Ghani says Malaysia is the first country in the world to openly welcome such an attempt. However, he says it is important that the expedition should not harm or frighten the creatures.

"Thank 'eavens... for ghosts with widely spaced teeth..."

In local legend? When that first report came out, it sounded like nobody had ever seen anything similar there.

ABC News actually ran a brief piece on this.... and it was every bit as snotty, condescending, and insulting as one would expect. During the short report, they indicated that the Patterson film had been "proven" to be a hoax. Then, when they went back to the "in studio" folks, they were all snickering and smirking, with one asking how "Bigfoot" could have gotten to Malaysia in the first place -- did he swim, take a plane, etc?

HO HO. Great stuff. What amazing wit!

Frankly, it is probably a GOOD thing that the "mainstream media" largely ignores cryptozoological stories...

Cool. Malaysia seems like a disproportionately fortean place.

Society Claims To Have Scientific Evidence Of Bigfoot Colony

JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- The Johor Wildlife Protection Society said it has "scientific evidence" to prove the existence of Bigfoot whose reported sightings recently in the Johor jungles have excited the world's media.

Not just one Bigfoot but a whole colony of the giant, hairy creatures which the society named "Orang Lenggor" (Lenggor People) as one was spotted in an area by that name, said the society's secretary Tay Teng Hwa.

"We will make public the evidence soon," he said today.

He said a member of the society had studied the creatures for six years and interacted directly with the colony.

"The adult creatures are between 10 and 12 feet tall while their children are 6 to 7 footers. Seventy per cent of the Orang Lenggor have a human appearance but the rest resemble apes," he said.

Tay declined to reveal the location of the Bigfoot colony or the type of "scientific evidence" in the possession of the society.

The claim by the society followed a statement by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman that he was convinced about the existence of Bigfoot based on information provided by Orang Asli.

Tay said the society decided to reveal its discovery because foreigners armed with sophisticated equipment were entering the Johor jungles to track down Bigfoot without the knowledge of the state government.

"We are worried these foreigners might find Bigfoot and then announce to the world as their discovery," he said.

Relating the background to the society's study of the creatures, he said a member of the society, who was a logger, came across Bigfoot when the creature encroached into the logging company's base camp to look for food.

Since that incident, the member began to study the creatures and went close to their colony.

Tay said the creatures, despite their size and rough appearance, were timid and showed no aggression to humans who approached them.

The "Orang Lenggor" had a covering of black hair on their bodies when they were young but the hair gradually turned brown as they grew older, he said.

"They like to eat fish and fruits they gather in the jungles, including durian. They also have a liking for river water that contains dissolved salt and would walk for miles to get it," he added.

Tay said the society would organise an expedition to the "Orang Lenggor" colony in either March or April.

Don't feel bad, Xanatico! I live in Malaysia and I have never gone to that park either!

I am skeptical about the whole Bigfoot story. Like the Orang Asli (native tribal people) in the area, I believe these "Bigfoot" are "hantus" - nature spirits. So nobody will find anything, neither our Wildlife Protection Societies nor those foreigners with their TV cameras and sophisticated equipment.

By the way, traditionally the Chinese call Bigfoot "San Shing" - literally, mountain spirits, and keep in mind the saying of Confucius - "pay spirits their due respect but give them a wide berth!"

hey go on over to the crytomundo site , check out the post showing the latest foot prints from that reality TV show that's out there with the researchers-they posted different foot prints and have some Ideas what they think it might be -Orang Pek (sp.?what ever) ., and rino...pretty interesting ...if it is a ape creature of some type , it is one big momma!!

Researcher finds ‘Bigfoot trail’

JOHOR BARU: A bio-researcher was startled to find two heaps of uprooted plants, 100m apart, in a secondary forest near Kampung Lukut China in Kota Tinggi.

Vincent Chow, on a personal expedition to find out if Bigfoot exists, said he came across the puzzling trail as he went some 200m into the secondary forest.

“The branches of saplings about 50cm above the ground were all broken,” he said, adding that he made sure he measured all his findings for research purposes.

“Then I looked up and saw the branches about 4m from the ground were also broken.”

Chow said the way they were broken showed they were done forcefully and intentionally.

Chow was further startled when he found a heap of uprooted plants, some with branches 2cm thick. He noted that it would have taken tremendous strength to do so.

“The question is why are they, whoever they are, clearing the forest? It would need a very strong person to uproot plants like that,” he said.

Chow said he believed the bizarre trail was made by the so-called Bigfoot, because the evidence indicated that it could not be made by humans.
