Efforts to save the whale continue.

French officials desperately trying to rescue a beluga whale trapped in the River Seine have come up with a new strategy - a vitamin cocktail.

According to AFP, rescuers hope it will help the lost whale regain its appetite and the energy needed to return to sea. The visibly malnourished mammal was first spotted in the river on Tuesday, around 70km (44 miles) north of Paris.

After failed attempts to encourage it to swim out, the animal remains stuck and scientists worry for its health. So far rescuers have offered up frozen herring and live trout for the four-metre whale to eat, but a local official in Eure, Isabelle Dorliat-Pouzet, said the animal did not appear to have accepted either.

"It's quite emaciated and seems to be having trouble eating," AFP quoted her as saying on Saturday.

Authorities hope that injecting the stranded animal with vitamins will stimulate its appetite and help it to make the long 160km (100 mile) return journey back up the river and out to the English Channel, where it can swim back to its Arctic habitat.

Another option being considered is to remove the whale from the river entirely, but this would require the mammal having enough strength to survive an even riskier journey.

Sadly the whale has died,

A beluga whale that became stranded in France's Seine river had to be put down, ending a dramatic rescue mission that captivated world audiences.

Officials say vets took the decision as the four-metre (13ft) mammal was being moved in a refrigerated truck. Overnight, rescuers spent nearly six hours lifting the 800kg (1,763lb) whale from the river using a crane and nets. They had planned to release the animal in the sea but its health deteriorated after failing to eat.

"It is with heavy hearts we announce that the beluga did not survive," Sea Shepherd France conservation group wrote in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

"We are devastated by this tragic outcome that we knew was very likely," it added.

Meanwhile, Florence Ollivet-Courtois, a vet for the local emergency services, was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that "the animal was not getting enough air and [was] suffering visibly. We therefore decided that it made no sense to set it free and proceeded to euthanasia," the vet added.

Experts are still puzzled as to how the whale - who had been trapped more than 100km (62 miles) inland - managed to stray so far south, away from its natural habitat.

(Warning - lazy national stereotype used for comedic effect, coming up - apologies to my French friends)

And from there, on to a Parisian abattoir, and then onto the plates of French diners.
"Hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw...it eez how eee would have wanteed to go" said one French chef.

Greenland shark found off coast of Belize

A shark normally found deep within the icy waters of the Arctic was spotted swimming 4,000 miles away in the warm Caribbean, much to scientists' disbelief.
One seemingly lost Greenland shark turned up off the coast of Belize in Central America while a team of researchers were out on a boat catching and tagging tiger sharks.

"I knew it was something unusual and so did the fishers, who hadn’t ever seen anything quite like it in all their combined years of fishing.”

Kasana took a photo of the enigmatic animal and sent it to her advisor, who said it appeared to be a Greenland shark, which was soon confirmed by experts on the specific species.

Didn't know if this belonged in the alien big cat thread or here. This animal is certainly out of place in Michigan. A mountain lion would not be extraordinary but a black one would be. This is a very good photo.

This photograph should be circulated around Britain as a reference for how an actual large, exotic cat unexpectedly seen at a distance should appear. Perhaps we'll get fewer moggie pics.

To be fair, without something to use for reference it is very difficult to judge the size of all sorts of things at a distance.
Cats should be forced to carry a 1 metre steel rule around with them everywhere.

That might help, although I fear they'll just use it to knock ornaments off the mantlepiece and prod us to get their food.

But it's not just the size. Although I've often noted how similar almost all felids are in form and mannerisms, there is actually quite a difference between the outline and movement of big cats and household moggies.

'content not available in this region'' unfortunately.

I suspect a certain amount of pareidolia is coming into effect if this is the only pic available though.

Not a happy ending for this story, unfortunately.

Sad end for seal spotted in paddock with cows at Simpson dairy farm in south-west Victoria

An elderly fur seal that was discovered on a dairy farm about 35 kilometres from the nearest beach has been euthanased.

The seal was first spotted on a property at Simpson, in south-west Victoria, on Sunday in the middle of a cow paddock.

Melbourne Zoo's Marine Response Unit was sent to the scene today as the Australian fur seal continued to travel across farmland away from the ocean.

Melbourne Zoo head veterinarian Michael Lynch said the plan had been to determine the next steps to appropriately care for the animal.

"Today's intervention was required after the seal failed to find a way back to the open ocean along the same path it used to arrive at the farm," Dr Lynch said.

Maybe he mistook the police station for a club.

A seal that made its home in a US pond has appeared outside a Massachusetts police station – a day after firefighters and wildlife experts spent hours trying to catch the animal.

The grey seal appeared earlier this month in Shoe Pond in the city of Beverly, north east of Boston. The mammal is believed to have travelled to the pond from the sea via a river and drainage pipes. The seal quickly became a local attraction and was even named “Shoebert” after its chosen pond.

Firefighters and wildlife experts used boats and giant nets in an effort to capture the wily animal on Thursday but gave up after several fruitless hours.

Early on Friday morning, however, Shoebert left the pond, crossed a car park and appeared outside the side door of the local police station looking, according to a police statement, “for some help”.

The seal was quickly corralled by a team of wildlife experts, firefighters and the police department’s “entire midnight shift”, according to a Facebook post from the Beverly Police Department.

Update.

Gateshead wallaby captured

Volunteers from Blyth Wildlife Rescue, BeastWatch UK (BWUK) and The Lost Dog Trapping Team freed the animal from a dog trap set up to catch it, and treated it for a severe injury to its face.

After a 12-hour mission Chopwell’s mystery visitor has been appropriately named ‘Choppy’.
Once sedated, the wallaby was checked for life-threatening injuries and deemed fit for transport to the veterinary practice in Birtley.

Choppy received a full assessment including X-rays, which fortunately showed no fractures.

But the animal had sustained swelling and bruising to its head, with bone exposed on its nose.

The wound was cleaned and successfully sutured under general anaesthetic.

Choppy was then transported to Northumberland College Zoo at Kirkley Hall, where teams will monitor it closely before integrating it with the two resident females already on site.
