This was a Christmas tradition on the Snopes forums, and now that they're gone and may never return this seemed like the place to revive it.

The premise is simple: take the lyrics to a Christmas song, run them through Google Translate or something similar, then do it again in a different language, and repeat until it comes out again in badly mangled English. Sometimes the results are astounding.

To start us off, here is "Jingle Bells" via Polish, Afrikaans, Thai, Swahili, and Irish. (And no, I don't know where all the "\ t" came from.)

Quickly through the snow
He opened one horse in a soft hand
Go to the branch where we are going
Lira all the way
The clock goes to Bob's tail ring.
Make the spirit clear
Is it pleasant to sing and sing?
Ride tonight!

Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!
Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!

A day or two earlier
I think I'll go
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
I sit beside me
Horse and light leather
Nausea involves their participation.
He fell on the couch and on the roof.
And then we have a good agreement

Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!
Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!

A day or two earlier
Story I need to tell
I came out in the snow
And I fell on my back;
A person who runs
In thin and horse
He laughed when I spoke there.
But it ran quickly

Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!
Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!

The world is now white.
Go young
Take the girls tonight
And singing, keeping your hand
Just take the caudate bay
Forty-two liked it.
Ask her to defer the release.
And crack! You will be a leader

Ringtones, ringtones, \ t
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!
Call the alarm to listen to the alarm
Jingle to the end
Oops, the pleasure of climbing
In the narrow horse only!

Come on, folks - join in! It's easy!

Here's "O Holy Night" (the original English version) after a ride through Somali, Albanian, Norwegian, Bulgarian, Welsh, Esperanto, Dutch, and Hawaiian.

Holy show! The stars will please.
It is the birthday of our Lord.
In a world full of guilt and guilt.
If he does not show up and think.
The benefits are happy, enjoying the painful world.
For a new morning has come.

Get on your knees! Listen to the voices of angels!
Tonight is the night to be born of Christ;
Holy day, night, night.

Guided by the light of faith,
We stand with her loving heart on her bed.
Guided by a clear star.
These are the leaves of the east.
Thus saith the king of kings.
Our whole experiment was born out of a friend of ours.

He knows our righteousness, and our lawlessness, and our foreigners;
This is your king! I do.
Look to your king and worship him.

He taught us to truly love one another;
Love is his law and his gospel is peace.
He makes your servant's chain even to our brother.
He shall be called by his name.
We sang a sweet and beautiful song,
We will all praise his holy name.

God is God! Praise his name continually;
His power and glory are forever and ever.
His power and glory are forever and ever.

Via Hungarian, Welsh, Portugese, Swedish and Chinese:

When shepherds look at their flock at night,
Everyone is sitting on the floor
Jehovah's Angel Comes Down
Glory radiates everywhere.
"Don't be afraid," he said in surprise.
He caused her agitation.
"I'm glad I'm really glad For you and all humanity.

"In the city of David today
He was born in the David Dynasty
Saviour, Christ the Lord, This will be a sign:
The strong girl you met there
For the human scene shown
Everything is wrapped with a drawstring,
On the crib.
That was what Seraphim said right away.
Clear breathing They do it in angels who praise God Receptionist's happy song:
"All glory goes to God. And on earth. from now on Never start and end."

We should do it and have people work out what it is! This via Icelandic and Bosnian

Holly and Ivy,
Garegar þeir eru báðir fullvaxnir,
If you got a trjánum sem eru í skóginum,
Holly ber kórónu.
Upprisa sólarinnar
Og gangi dádýranna,
And he was spying on an organ watching,
Ljúfur söngur í kórnum.

The Holly & the Ivy, but the above converted into Latin (and firstly deconverted back into English)

Sunt enim tam mature,
Si autem arbor silvis
Ilex portat coronam.
Resurrectio sole
Et factum est cum currit de venatione cervorum
Et factum est organum exploratores provinciae jejuniis multis,
Dulce in choro canticum

(I now feel a bit of a Gaudete coming on....must be at least a year since I last posted this 8-/ )

Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Tempus adest gratiae, hoc quod optabamus
Carmina laetitiae devote redamus
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Deus homo factus est natura mirante
Mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Ezechielis porta clausa per transitur
Unde lux est orta salus invenitur
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria Virgine, Gaudete

I've had this on my Christmas tunes car cd for years (being a particular favourite of my mums), and I've been making the words up to it for decades. Nice to finally see them, and realise my decades old intro Latin wasnt too off track! Thanks

I attempted a multi-translation shredding of "Little Drummer Boy", but all the "pa rum-pum-pum-pum's" played havoc with Google Translate.

(Seriously; no joke .... )
Well, it might let some of them drop (the Irish seem to think Tamil speakers "rum-pum" all the time and it usually means nothing) but still...

English>Hungarian>Tamil>Irish>English
After I say, the donkey drops
Look at a newborn king
Our best gifts are Bum Bum Bum Bum
If you lie in front of the king,
Bumper

So it is his crush, his ass,
When we come.

Small child, margin
I am a poor boy too
No gift will be given to me
It belongs to the king;
Bumper

I can play for you,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, was all the time
The bull and lamb were placed at the right time
I played a drum for him
I did my best to that, Ba Rum Bum Bum Bum,
Bumper

Then he laughed at me, he was victorious
I am also the drummer.

We should do it and have people work out what it is! This via Icelandic and Bosnian

Holly and Ivy,
Garegar þeir eru báðir fullvaxnir,
If you got a trjánum sem eru í skóginum,
Holly ber kórónu.
Upprisa sólarinnar
Og gangi dádýranna,
And he was spying on an organ watching,
Ljúfur söngur í kórnum.
Why does your Icelandic have so much English in it? When I do English>Bosnian>Icelandic I get:
Holly og Ivy,
Þegar þeir báðir voru fullorðnir,
Af öllum trjánum sem eru í skóginum
Holly klæðist kórónu:
Ó, sólarupprás,
Og hlaupandi dádýr
Að spila á gleðilegt orgel,
Ljúfur söngur í kórnum.

Which translates as:
Holly and Ivy,
When they were both adults,
Of all the trees that are in the forest
Holly wears a crown:
Oh, sunrise,
And running deer
Playing a happy organ,
Sweet song in the choir.

But add Xhosa, Uzbek, and French to the mix and the message changes a bit:
Holly and Ivy,
When they were both adults.
Of all the trees of the forest
Holly crowned:
O sunrise,
And a deer who works
To play a happy member,
It's a beautiful song in the choir.

Anyway, are you saying we shouldn't translate back to English, and then let people guess? That's perverse. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) I do like the idea of not saying what the original song is, though (unless it's very obscure):

English>Japanese>Thai>English>Scots Gaelic>English
Santa's baby black sleigh under the tree
I became a very good boy
Beloved Santa and hurry to the chimney tonight

Santa Baby, '54 Convertible, too light blue
I love U
Santa ran to the chimney tonight.

Imagine the fun I missed.
Losing all the blowjobs I didn't kiss
Probably next year
If you take a look at my baptismal list

Santa, I need a yacht. Not many.
I am an angel all year long.
Santa ran to the chimney tonight.

Santa, which I really want to do
Go to the platinum mine
Santa ran to the chimney tonight.

Fill up the cuteness of Santa and my socks with a double sided print and study.
"X" signal cable
Santa Kawai hurried to the chimney tonight.

Come and set up my baptismal tree
With decorations purchased at Tiffany's
I really believe you
We'll see if you believe me

Don't forget to talk about Santa who likes little things. Circle
Not a phone
Beloved Santa and hurry to the chimney tonight
Hurry to the chimney tonight
Hurry tonight

This is addictive, once you get into it!

This is Slade's seminal Christmas hit via Scottish Gaelic and Hebrew:

"You hang a sock on the wall?
This is the time for every Santa to have a ball
Does he ride red moose?
Is there a tuna up her sleeve?
Do the fairies keep it festive for one day?
So here it is, Merry Christmas
Everyone has fun
Look to the future now
It's just getting started
Waiting for the family to arrive?
Are you sure you found the room to rest in?
Does your grandmother always tell him
That the best old songs?
Then she swings with the rest
So here's to Merry Christmas
Everyone has fun
Look to the future now
It's just getting started
What your father does
When he sees your mother kissing Santa Claus?
Ah-ha"

I'm spending too long on this, so here's my last one - one of the most annoying Christmas songs ever, via Indonesian, Basque and Hawaiian,
Can you guess what it is yet ?

"Hey, Mr. Churchill here and there
To say that we did very well
But get some ice here
Parties will come from the enemy
Oh, to say it's difficult, that's enough for me
Can you close the business?
I have to fight every night
Interest in the centuries
Then again, I mean that
Can you close the business?
Mary Bradley is waiting at home
In the field of nuclear engineering
Now I can dance
In the arms of the girl I love
I wish I was home at Christmas
Bang! That oak is in another town
While the lights were on, Jim took out the oil
When I get home, I sit down and tell the story
I will run for every president
If selected, I stand, I will stop the attack
I wish I was home at Christmas
Now I can dance
In the arms of the girl I love
Mary Bradley is waiting at home
She waited two years
I wish I was home at Christmas

Stop the Cavalry, one of my favourite Christmas songs.

One more from me. English>German>Lao>Igbo>Bengali>Chinese>English. (The title is translated correctly in one spot only.)

They call me the holy gate behind
I ride at dawn
They call me the holy gate behind
I ride at dawn
I make all the girls happy
Let the boys play

I don't like st nick
Once a month
I don't like st nick
Once a month
I ran away with a gift
Whenever you see me in love

My wallet changed when the baby was at home
I give them a few cents alone
When someone is drunk I leave the door
If there is no canal in the house, will the old Santa have problems?

They call me the holy gate behind
I ride at dawn
I make all the girls happy
Let the boys play

That's what they call me backdoor santa
That's what they call me
They call me the holy gate behind
All the girls are calling me

I give them a small gift
That's what they call me
They call me the holy gate behind
I want you to call me
They call me the holy gate behind
I like it, I like it

English --> Punjabi, Igbo, Yiddish, Indonesian, Somali --> English

I saw my mom kissing Santa Claus
Lights at night
She saw me screaming
Take the stairs from the mental hospital
He thought I was caught
In my room, I fell asleep
Then I saw Santa Claus's mother
White food under his chin
Oh, how strange that is
If only you could see it
My mother taught Santa Claus last night

Donkey, little horse on the way
You need to go ahead and import the essentials
Featuring long, short asses, and a night of winter
don't give up now, little ass,
Betlehems love
Put a bell tonight Bethlehem,
Bethlehem
Follow the stars tonight Bethlehem,
Bethlehem
The donkey, the donkey for the day
Donkey, bring Mary to peace
Donkey, donkey, the end of the walk is near
Experts are waiting for a signal to bring them here
Don't bother a donkey, the star is in front of you Little guide you.

English -> Urdu -> Japanese -> Gujarati -> SIndhi -> English

You know dancers, dancers, racists and vaccines
Comedian, conductor, donor and assistant
Will you then be mindful?
The most famous Reindeer when?

Rudolph's red sand
It was a very shiny nose
And if you have why
You say but it shines

Another reference
He smiled smilingly and called her name
They are not going to take Rudolph
Take part in the athlete's race

Then chill on Christmas
Santa was saying
"Rudolph, your nose is very light
Will you show me my sleep tonight? "

So how did he love her in the cold zone?
When they were happy
Rudolph's red sand
Will be history
