A New Zealand man who initially thought he had water trapped in his ear said the true cause of the blockage turned out to be something far more shocking -- a live cockroach.

Zane Wedding, 40, of Auckland, said he went swimming at a local pool Friday and later felt the sensation of blockage in his ear. ...

"I used some drops to clear it up and fell asleep on the couch later that night" ...

He said his ear still felt blocked the next day, so he went to see a doctor, who advised him to try using a hairdryer to dry up the water inside his ear canal.

Wedding said the feeling persisted, so he went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist on Monday.

He said the doctor expressed shock immediately upon looking inside his ear. ...

Wedding said it took the doctor about five minutes to extract the cockroach.

"Every time she touched it I just imagined her squishing a cockroach into my eardrum, so I wasn't the perfect patient," he said. ...

And then there's the hideous Guinea Worm, which gets into one from contaminated drinking water, then crawls around inside one eating whatever it eats, and growing, until it gets huge and can be seen beneath the skin. The only cure for it that I've read of is to make a nick in the victim's skin that the worm will stick its nasty little head out of. Then someone *else* needs to catch that end on a stick and then slowly, carefully pull the Guinea Worm out of the victim by winding it around the stick. With emphasis on the slowly and carefully part, because if part of the Guinea Worm breaks off in the sufferer, it will grow into a new one.
 
You don't just try to remove the entire worm all at once when it first shows itself. The worm's emergence takes weeks.

Oh, ick. I just went and read that whole entry on the Dracunculiasis organism and it's even worse than I thought it was. The Wikipedia article is truly the stuff of nightmares, and my skin just crawled right off my body while I was reading it.
 

Doctors Remove 150 Live Bugs From Florida Man's Nose​


Dozens and dozens of larvae were reportedly feeding on the man's nose and sinus cavity — some as big as the end of a pinkie.

The unidentified patient went to a hospital earlier this month after noticing that his whole face felt like it was on fire.

Although the man first started experiencing symptoms in October, it wasn’t until recently that they became serious.

“Over a couple hours my face just started swelling, my lips swelled, I could hardly talk,” the patient [said]. “I couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom without my nose starting to bleed.”

The man visited HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and consulted with Dr. David Carlson, an ear, nose and throat specialist who was on call.

Carlson was shocked when he looked inside the man’s nose with a camera. He saw dozens and dozens of bugs feeding on the nose and sinus cavity ― some as big as the end of his pinkie.

“I knew he was in big trouble, there was erosion that was occurring near the skull base in very close proximity to his eye and his brain,” Carlson said.

At first, the physician tried using suction to remove the insects, which were in the larval stage. But they were too large, so he had to extract them one by one from the man’s nose.

“They were right up against his skull base, right under the brain, had they gone through that it could have killed him,” Carlson said.

The bugs have since been sent to an epidemiologist to determine their species. The patient is expected to make a full recovery.

It remains a mystery how the larvae got inside the man’s nose, but he [said] that the problem might have stemmed from his bad hygiene habits when handling dead fish.

That's what I thought. I wonder how they got up there?

He mentioned about how he's always going to wash his hands after touching fish so I guess he goes fishing a lot. There again, parasites that breath air aren't going to come from a fish.

I'm horrified by the description, so much so that I am not going to watch that video. Ever!!

It seems surreal to me that so much damage was done without him being aware of it...

My theory - based on nothing more than being a cynical old Hector - is that he’d tooted so much gak that:

a) The inside of his nose was in rag order, and;

b) - cocaine being an anaesthetic -

c) - Nature’s cleanup crew were able to enjoy the results of the carnage without him noticing.

Seems a reasonable theory to me, and I love the bang-up-to-date Hector's House reference!!

(Although I'm sure he was usually a lovable old hector rather than cynical, which I'm guessing you know...)

Ain't looking at that video, nope, no way no how, not for a hundred dollars or a thousand or a pedigreed puppydog. I have already accidentally absorbed way too much information about this situation just by scrolling past the story as quickly as humanly possible.

Woman's Mysterious Ear Pain Turns Out to Be a Tick — and Its 8 Babies


Rosie Swain and her husband had been traveling through the national parks in South Africa when, towards the end of her trip, her ear started to hurt.

“For the last few days of the trip, my ear hadn’t felt right and was extremely itchy,” Swain wrote, adding that one morning, after a “terrible sleep,” she said she “noticed drops of blood on my pillow.”

She originally chalked her earache and continued pain up to a run-down immune system from the long trip. But when they returned home to Singapore, Swain's ear pain continued.

Her husband bought an ostoscope online for $20 — it had a small camera attached to the end and connected to a smartphone, giving a view of what was inside her ear.

"We both squinted as we came across what looked like some hard black bubbles and dried blood. At first I thought maybe it was a scab, but my stomach lurched when we saw something move,” Swain said.

The insect was painful to remove, Swain said, because it was embedded in her skin close to her eardrum. The babies, however, were “hoovered up and almost too small to see.”

As for the tick, “the doctor put the mother in a tiny test tube and we sat there in shock. He wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. My husband and I firmly shook our heads at the offer of taking it home.”
