The British army's officers were a pretty cruel bunch back in those days when a policy of shoot first and ask questions later prevailed.

"...an angry mob who had armed themselves with kitchen knives and pitchforks etc.

...when they realised it was only 3 men in the jeep, they surrounded the MP again more determined to rip the man apart."

How quickly we forget the murders of Cpl. Derek Wood and Cpl. David Howes by a mob in Ulster.

They, too, were in a car. They, too, fired into the air in order not to kill unarmed civilians. Tragically, in that case:

"The soldiers were then dragged from the car and taken to a nearby sports ground where they were beaten, stripped and searched. They were then driven to a nearby waste ground where they were shot dead."
