People Who Are Discovered Or Re-Surface After Long Disappearances

l’m surprised that there’s been no mention of Pvt. Teruo Nakamura and Lt. Hirō Onoda of the Imperial Japanese Army, both of whom carried on their lonely duty in WWII until 18th December and 11th March 1974 respectively.

Lt. Onoda refused to surrender his sword and rifle until his old CO, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, was flown to the Philippines and handed him the following written order:

  1. In accordance with the Imperial command, the Fourteenth Area Army has ceased all combat activity.
  2. In accordance with military Headquarters Command No. A-2003, the Special Squadron of Staff's Headquarters is relieved of all military duties.
  3. Units and individuals under the command of Special Squadron are to cease military activities and operations immediately and place themselves under the command of the nearest superior officer. When no officer can be found, they are to communicate with the American or Philippine forces and follow their directives.
Life is lighter than a feather; duty heavier than a mountain.”

Colombian woman missing 2 years found alive at sea

In a survival saga for the ages, a Colombian woman who had fallen off the grid two years ago was miraculously discovered alive at sea by flabbergasted fishermen.

“Thank God I was alive,” said Angelica Gaitan, 46, who was found Saturday by Roland Visbal while floating 1.2 miles off of Puerto Colombia.

In the stunning footage shot by her rescuer, Visbal and a friend named Gustavo can be seen maneuvering their vessel toward the suspended woman, who appears unresponsive. In fact, they initially mistook Gaitan for a piece of driftwood until she raised her hands to signal for help.

The valiant duo is heard in the clip trying to get the waterlogged woman’s attention by calling out in both Spanish and English. Unfortunately, Gaitan is unable to reply, with subsequent reports stating that she suffered from exhaustion and hypothermia, having been adrift for eight hours.

The victim’s first words after being rescued were, “I was born again. God did not want me to die.”

After Gaitan was identified, her harrowing backstory came to light. The drifter had fallen out of touch with her family two years ago, and they had no idea where she was until now.

She later said that the predicament was the culmination of 20 years of domestic abuse she said she suffered at the hands of her partner.

“The abuse began in the first pregnancy. He beat me, he violently abused me,” Gaitan revealed. “In my second pregnancy, the abuse continued and I could not get away from him because the girls were small.”

Unfortunately, despite Gaitan allegedly reporting the incidents, the police detained the abuser for only 24 hours, after which he returned home and resumed assaulting her.

The tipping point came in September 2018 when, according to Gaitan, her partner “broke my face and tried to kill me.” The distraught woman ran away and ended up staying in Barranquilla for six months. An eventual attempt to seek help at a homeless shelter failed and she fell into a deep depression.

“I did not want to continue with my life,” said Gaitan, who later took a bus to the beach and “decided to jump into the sea.” The survivor said she remembers little after that point since she became unconscious.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Gaitan’s disappearance and rescue.

I don't watch Mad Men, can you elaborate Scarg?
I too would know my wife, it's an odd case alright.

Heh, this a bit late. We were watching Mad Men at the time.
A major character called Joan marries a surgeon who enlists to serve in the Vietnam war. He jealous and can be vicious. She eventually realises her mistake and they divorce.

I wondered if Mrs Dandy was used to her military husband coming and going, and whether, if their relationship were normally volatile, she might have been relieved if her 'husband' suddenly started acting more kindly towards her.

Colombian woman missing 2 years found alive at sea
In a survival saga for the ages, a Colombian woman who had fallen off the grid two years ago was miraculously discovered alive at sea by flabbergasted fishermen. ...

Update ...

The scenario is more complicated than originally described. Ms. Gaitan has been reunited with her family, who've told reporters there are long-term mental health issues involved.
Missing woman found at sea suffers from mental health issues: daughter

The Colombian woman who was rescued at sea by fishermen has a history of mental health issues that may have contributed to the bizarre saga in which she was off the grid for two years, her family said.

Paula Castiblanco said she believes that her mother, Angelica Gaitan, suffers from psychological trauma that played a role in her becoming lost at sea more than a kilometre off the coast of Puerto Colombia, Colombian outlet El Heraldo reported.

“We think that during that period of time that she was missing, perhaps something could have happened to her that caused her psychological trauma,” her daughter told the outlet.

She added her mother had long grappled with panic attacks, which were often brought on by the sight of high-end cars. ...

“Every time she saw a high-end car she would scream and say that they were coming for her (and) that we shouldn’t let her get on those cars. She covered her head and said that a man would come for her,” Ms Castiblanco said.

Viral video taken by her rescuers showed Ms Gaitan floating at sea before she was pulled from the water by the two men.

She was brought to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia and exhaustion, having apparently been adrift for eight hours, according to reports.

She later told local media that she had been out of touch with her family for two years after escaping domestic violence ...

Her daughter, Ms Castiblanco, said she lost contact with her mother after the woman left in September 2018 with a brother for Ecuador, the outlet reported.

The family only received word about her whereabouts in March when her father was notified by their health insurance that her mother had scheduled a psychologist appointment, El Heraldo reported.

“Later we found out that she was in Barranquilla, in a homeless shelter, but we cannot say how she got to that city,” Ms Castiblanco said.

Ms Gaitan has since been reunited with some of her family members and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and rescue ...

His parents were searching for him for 25 years and his body had actually been recovered a few weeks after he went missing. At least they have closure now.

The family of a Limerick man, who was missing for the past 25 years, have been informed by gardaí that his human remains were actually discovered in 1996, a few weeks after he disappeared.

The remains were identified in recent days, some two-and-a-half decades later.

Denis Walsh was 23 when he went missing on March 9, 1996.

Over the years since, Mr Walsh’s parents, Denis Snr and Mary, have made appeals for information, and even travelled abroad to follow up on a number of reported sightings of their missing son.Mr and Mrs Walsh were visited by two members of An Garda Síochána over the weekend, who informed them that gardaí had received confirmation that human remains found in 1996 belong to their son.

In response to queries, a Garda spokesman said:

“On March 9, 1996, Mr Denis Walsh, Caherdavin, Limerick, was reported missing to Gardaí at Mayorstone Park Garda Station in Limerick. The missing person investigation file remained open until now. In April 1996, an unidentified body was recovered off Inis Mor, Aran Islands, Co. Galway. This unidentified body was taken to the Mortuary in UCHG. Bodily samples were taken and forwarded to the Forensic Science laboratory in an effort to identify the deceased. These samples were examined in July 2008, March 2011 and June 2017, with negative results for a match. On February 5, 2021, Gardaí in Mayorstone were notified of a positive match following advances in DNA. The remains were positively identified from reference samples from both parents as that of Mr Walsh. The family have been notified.” ...

This is horrifying. Ireland isn't THAT big and doesn't have SO many people go missing that two and two couldn't be put together - surely?

I remember back in 94-95? a friend of mine in the local was very worried that his brother had gone missing. Days then weeks went by. He hadn’t used his credit cards, and back then didn’t have a mobile.

Then his body was found next to his bike in a wheat field only a few miles away. It seemed that he had been biking, turned into the field gate for some reason, maybe just to rest, but must have gone over a bump, come off the bike and broke his neck. The growing wheat hid the body and the bike until the farmer discovered it. Incredibly sad, and such a strange and abrupt accident. There was no underlying condition, no depression, etc, just perhaps a one in a million accident.:(

When you say 'biking' I assume you mean a pushbike? Maybe he was nipping into the field for a slash. Male cyclists're always doing that.

They normally get off and carefully wheel the bike along out of sight of the road because the offroad surface is bad for the tyres. Your friend's brother must have been very unlucky indeed to have such an accident.

Put it this way - if this happened to Techy when he was out cycling I'd be suspicious.

Yes, a pushbike, Escargot. I think he’d not long had the bike, had just started or not long started. And probably he did go into the field to relieve himself. At any rate there was no question of it being anything other than an accident iirc, just as you say, horribly unlucky.

Policeman missing since Boxing Day tsunami 16 years ago 'found in psychiatric hospital'

A police officer missing since the devastating Boxing Day tsunami 16 years ago is believed to have been found in a psychiatric hospital.

Zainal Abidin was one of tens of thousands of people missing after the deadly tsunami that hit Aceh, Indonesia in 2004, killing a horrifying 230,000 people.

In 2009, a man was found wandering around by a village chief who had him admitted to a mental institution in Banda Aceh.

His identity was unknown at the time and he remained in the institution, although his condition has not been disclosed.

iu

Local police recently began to suspect the patient is Zainal, also known as Asep, when his photo was circulated on social media alongside an old photo of Asep in police uniform.

Aceh Provincial Police are investigating and believe they have found Asep, but are awaiting final verification, according to reports.

Case might be solved.

Garda divers are travelling to Crosshaven in Cork following the discovery of a car which it’s believed may be linked to a person who has been missing for almost 20 years.

The car was discovered in the water close to Crosshaven village by a team from the Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery (CCMPSR) group during a training exercise yesterday.

The team boarded a boat and deployed a new side-scanning sonar device during several sweeps of the waters between Camden and Drake’s Pool before the device identified an item of interest close to Hugh Coveney Pier just before midday. The team honed their sonar sweeps on this area, and scanned the area several times before deciding to commit their own divers to the water to investigate.

It's both creepy and disturbingly common for missing persons to be eventually discovered in submerged vehicles where they've gone unnoticed for years or even decades. The classic case illustrating this is the Foss Lake incident.

Update.

A car believed to belong to a man who went missing in 2004 was recovered from a river in Cork last night but no human remains were found inside.

Family and friends of Barry Coughlan, 23, who was last seen in Crosshaven, Co Cork, on May 1, 2004, must now wait for Garda forensic experts to examine the vehicle which was recovered from the bed of the Owenabue River, close to where he was last seen, to confirm whether or not it is his car.

That's a surprise, no remains in the car. I'd been expecting to hear he'd been found but he's not there and it might not be his car.

Can't be nice for his family. :(

Maybe not his car, and maybe he wasn't inside it... this boils down to 'they found a car'.

It is his car and they have found skeletal remains.

Gardaí examining the car of missing Cork fisherman Barry Coughlan have confirmed that they have found skeletal remains in the vehicle.

Mr Coughlan, who was from Crosshaven in Co Cork, was 23 when he went missing from the village in the early hours of 1 May 2004.

Since then, no trace of him or his Toyota Corolla car had been found.

On Wednesday, volunteers from Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery discovered a car in the water close to Hugh Coveney Pier in Crosshaven.

The car was later confirmed as Mr Coghlan's. It was taken from the water using a crane late last night.

Reading between the lines here I suspect this will become a murder investigation.

The remains don't seem to have been found until the car was recovered.

If experienced divers with specialist equipment and lights didn't spot the remains in the car right away, either the remains are just bones that were covered over in silt and hard to see or they weren't in the passenger area at all.

All this suggests to me that the remains were in the boot. Mr Coughlan couldn't have put himself there and then submerged the car.

Skeletal remains recovered from a car submerged off Hugh Coveney Pier in Crosshaven, Co Cork have been identified as that of Barry Coughlan.

Mr Coughlan, 23, was last seen in the Cork coastal village near the location of the car after he went missing on May 1, 2004.

He was last seen outside the former Moonduster Bar in Crosshaven between 1.30am and 2am on Saturday May 1. His car had been parked nearby. The pier is just a few hundred metres from where Mr Coughlan was last seen. Despite exhaustive river searches involving boats and divers at the time, Mr Coughlan and his car were never found. ...

DNA analysis conducted by Forensic Science Ireland has now confirmed the identify of the remains as Mr Coughlan.

A file is now being prepared for the coroner by investigating gardaí.

Reunited with stolen child after 32 years.

A Chinese couple whose son was abducted in a hotel in 1988 have been reunited with him after 32 years.

Mao Yin was snatched aged two, while his father stopped to get him some water on the way home from nursery.

His parents searched the country for him and his mother distributed more than 100,000 flyers.

The family were reunited at a police news conference on Monday, and the son - now aged 34 - said he planned to spend time with his parents.

"I would like to thank the tens of thousands of people who helped us," said Li Jingzhi, the boy's mother.

Another Chinese father reunited with his son.

A Chinese man has been reunited with his son after a 24-year search that saw him travel over 500,000km (310,000 mi) on a motorbike across the country.

Guo Gangtang's son had been snatched aged two by human traffickers in front of their home in Shandong province. His son's disappearance actually inspired a movie in 2015, which starred Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau. Child abductions are a big problem in China, with thousands taken every year.

According to China's Ministry of Public Security, the police were able to trace his son's identity using DNA testing. Two suspects were later tracked down and have been arrested, said a Global Times report.

The suspects, who were dating at the time, had planned to kidnap a child with the intention of selling him for money, said a report by China News. After spotting Mr Guo's son playing alone outside his home, the female suspect identified only by her surname Tang grabbed him and took him to the bus station, where her partner, a Mr Hu, was waiting.

Yorkshireman missing for over a year is found sleeping rough in Lapland

A man who disappeared from West Yorkshire last year has been located nearly 3,500km away in Lapland – thanks to the help of a kind Swede and social media users.

Nial Atkin went missing in May 2020 from Huddersfield, leaving his family desperately worried and police unsure of his whereabouts.

But last Friday, July 9, a man living in Kiruna, Sweden, offered a rough sleeper a shower and a clean bed after becoming concerned that he looked disorientated.

Jerry Ahlqvist took to Facebook to appeal for help in reuniting the then unidentified homeless Brit with his family – and now believes the man is Nial.

Police in the UK initially thought the 26-year-old, who is thought to have suffered a break down, may have travelled to Scotland.

‘I brought him home and cleaned him, gave him some food and new clothes, and a clean bed to sleep in.

‘He is kind of hard to communicate with, he gets lost in his thoughts, takes a long time to answer questions and he just stares into nothing.

‘Anyway he is currently in a small town called Kiruna way up north in Sweden. I think he needs some help but I don’t know what to do? Help me help him? Share and try finding his family?’

Facebook users alerted Jerry to a Police Scotland plea issued last year which sought help in finding missing Nial, then 25.

Jerry then put a new post out which read: ‘UPDATE! We have found his mother and I have spoken with her on the phone.

‘The thing is that Nial is in a psychotic state and he does not know what he wants or what’s best for him. But we will figure this out.

‘His mother knows and understands because she has a psychiatric education and I know and understand because I have myself gone through treatment for schizophrenia and have suffered psychosis myself so I saw the signs from across the streets.’

He added: ‘Everything will be okay and we will try to get the proper treatment for him!
Nial Akin in May 2020 and July 2021.

"The boyfriend of a British woman who went missing while hiking in the Pyrenees has found her body and belongings.

Esther Dingley, from Durham, vanished on a solo trek in November sparking major searches by French and Spanish police and her partner Daniel Colegate.

A fragment of bone found in July was confirmed to be the 37-year-old's.

LBT Global, which is supporting the family, said an accident "is the most likely hypothesis".

A spokesman for the charity said Mr Colegate found his girlfriend's remains on Monday afternoon, close to where the bone fragment was discovered."

Shades of Foss Lake ... A woman who disappeared 43 years ago may have finally been found - in her car, at the bottom of a New Hampshire river.
Body of woman missing for 43 years found in New Hampshire river

The remains of a New Hampshire woman who went missing some 43 years ago is believed to have been found Thursday inside a vehicle at the bottom of the Connecticut River under 14 feet of water.

It is not known how the vehicle, found near the New Hampshire/Vermont border, got to the bottom of the river. It is being investigated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game, which found the vehicle, the Gorham Police Department, Lancaster Police Department and Vermont State Police. ...

The vehicle was found south of the Mount Orne Covered Bridge that connects Lancaster, N.H. with Lunenburg, Vt.

"The vehicle that was found [Thursday] is a 1972 Pontiac LeMans with a license plate of OB610, which is the license plate that was registered to [Alberta] Leeman at that time ... "

Leeman, who lived in Gorham, went missing in 1978 but her disappearance was not considered suspicious.

"Alberta Leeman was in Gilman, Vt., on July 25, 1978, and she was heading back towards the Gorham area on that day," Mancini said. He said officials are working to positively confirm that the remains in the vehicle are that of Leeman. ...
FULL STORY: https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2021/08/07/woman-missing-new-hampshire-body-found/1711628366326/

Apparently her disappearance was not considered suspicious. That's weird for a start.
Agreed ... It makes me wonder whether she had been known for erratic or unexpected behavior. This angle seems to be supported by the following from another source:
Leeman’s disappearance is not considered suspicious by investigators, though details raised some eyebrows in her family. For example, she had left her purse at home, and even had a cup of coffee on the table.

“Your mind goes that way anyway,” granddaughter Roxanne McLain, who was 16 when Alberta went missing, told the Union Leader New Hampshire. “They got suspicious about where she could have gone. She could have been taken. Everything was left at home, except for herself and her car, so it looked suspicious.”
https://lawandcrime.com/high-profil...s-car-in-river-human-remains-were-discovered/

It may simply be a matter of imprecise phrasing in the news accounts - i.e., her disappearance isn't considered suspicious now after they've found her car (and almost certainly her) in a river just below a bridge she could have have missed on her drive back home from Gilman.

Body of missing Idaho bow hunter found after 53-year-disappearance
Tommy Taylor For Dailymail.Com 4 hrs ago

An Idaho bow hunter taking a shortcut in the mountains on Friday found the remains of another hunter - a man who had been missing for 53 years. The missing hunter, identified as Raymond Jones, was 39 in September 7, 1968 when he disappeared. He had been looking for mountain goats in the east fork of Hayden Creek in Lemhi County.

His body was found Friday afternoon by another hunter who called the Lemhi County Police. It was not clear how Jones had died but Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner said that the area where he disappeared was 'perilous' because of the rocky and rough terrain.

The police identified the body as Jones when they found his wallet with his identification at the scene.

'It's pretty wild, ain't it?', Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner told EastIdahoNews.com. 'You have another bowhunter looking for a shortcut who stumbled upon a bowhunter from 53 years ago.'

The hunt for Jones originally launched two days after his disappearance and a 70-person search party along with an aircraft were used. Efforts were briefly halted due to snow. An article from the Associated Press on September 15, 1968 said the search reopened after footprints were found near the area of Jones' disappearance. The case, however, was abandoned again and no further reported search efforts were made. He was declared dead in 1970.

The hunter who found the body has not been identified.

A Kenyan police officer who vanished and was subsequently fired for desertion and had an arrest warrant issued for him, was actually an unknown patient in the main hospital who was in a coma.

"A Kenyan police officer has woken up from a nine-month coma to find he had been sacked for desertion.

Neither the family nor the police force had any idea where Constable Reuben Kimutai Lel was - his niece told the BBC they thought he was dead.

But it turns out that he had been the victim of a road accident and had been in one of the country's biggest hospitals all along.

He only regained consciousness last week.

His niece Joan Jeptoo told the BBC of the family's horror as they searched for his body in morgues after they had given up on his chances of being alive.
At one point they almost collected a decomposing body from a morgue that was said to be him.

"We thought he was dead because his phone was off. Early this year we went to collect a body that we were told resembled him, but the fingerprints didn't match," she said.

The police officer was admitted on 21 December 2020 as an unknown person at the main referral hospital in the capital, Nairobi. He had no identity documents with him.

Meanwhile, he was sacked from his job, charged in absentia with desertion and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The case was later withdrawn after police failed to find him."
