Peripheral Vision Car Plume

I ask this question because I see this often but have never asked anyone else about it.

When I am waiting at traffic lights in my car (for instance) as the cars drive past in front of me I can perceive a plume of light rising up from the rear of the car. I can’t see it directly, but by looking slightly away, it’s observed in my peripheral vision.

It’s the same on a dull day, or whether it’s wet or dry driving conditions, same and it’s not affected by the colour of the car.

Anyone else see this or know what this is ?

Cant say I have ever noticed it but catalytic converters can get very hot.

something to do with persistence of vision?

if you are getting a halo around lights in general, get checked for cataracts :)
