Phantom Hitchhikers & Road Ghosts

Have we had this one fron Sevenoaks?

A21 Sevenoaks Bypass. Many motorists have claimed that they have experienced paranormal activity on the A21, numerous even stating that they have seen strange figures stepping out in front of cars and then completely disappearing.

Where the new dual carriageway intersects with the *Old Gracious Lane* it is reputedly stated to be the most haunted part of the road. It has been claimed that the road disappears and is replaced by a false road which takes the car to the right.

Ghost hunters have blamed several fatal collisions over the years on this appearance.

*Gracious lane (red line) was cut in two when the bypass was built, and another nearby was removed (black).

This story fascinates me, as does the story of the railway crash in Sevenoaks/associated ghosts as I have a connection to Sevenoaks and go back there regularly.

I'm not sure if I know about that offhand. I'll have to check. It rings a bell though.

I'm glad you like the road story.

I haven't had chance to look into it any further yet, but it does seem an ideal place considering there used to be a road where the apparitions appear.

@Tunn11 is our man on the ground there.
We'll send him out for a recce.

I thought that, but it's from South Africa in 1968;
That was great! I love the Uniondale case, so many named witnesses, like Blue Bell Hill. It makes me wonder if anyone looked for any ancient monuments along the road in question, since I have some gut feeling that the Kit's Coty House dolmen is somehow linked to the Blue Bell Hill encounters.

Some synchronicity here as I had just been reading about this in @RuthRoperWylde 's excellent "Roadmap of British Ghosts vol 2"

Gracious Lane was used as a temporary diversion in 1967 when the by pass was built:

"An extension southwards to a temporary junction with Gracious Lane opened on 16 January 1967. It was for northbound traffic only. A section south of here had to be rebuilt on a different alignment owing to landslips because of the slippery clay sub-soil. "The Builder" reported that advice at the planning stage from local farmers was ignored and the piers of the Hubbards Hill Bridge were at 5 to 10 degrees from vertical within a few weeks. The diversion was to cost an extra £1.2 million. To compound matters the new Morants Court bridge was having to be partially rebuilt owing to porous pockets in the concrete caused by a breakdown in the pouring of concrete one night."

Currently Gracious Lane is at a much higher elevation than the A21
GL Bridge WfRDRFXOEZxPKtB-800x450-noPad.jpg

and had become a "popular" site for suicides leading to petitions to make the bridge safer.

This from https://www.change.org/p/sevenoaks-...d-rails-on-gracious-lane-bridge-to-save-lives

"A number of people have sadly taken their lives by jumping from Gracious Lane bridge over the A21 in Sevenoaks. There are Samaritans signs on the bridge but we need to do more to protect both the people who are considering jumping and those that are at risk when driving on the A21, not only from seeing someone jumping from the bridge but also the risk of serious injury.
By introducing high guard rails people will not be able to jump."

I'm not sure about that, it is more difficult for them to jump, certainly but not impossible. The road works for this took ages with local MP getting involved in the length of time taken, road closures, etc.

I'm not sure (still looking) whether what is now "Tonbridge Rd" on the south of Sevenoaks used to be designated the A21 before the by pass was built. That certainly had and still has a level junction with Gracious Lane.
Here's streetview looking north:
https://www.instantstreetview.com/@51.251458,0.200887,307.96h,-1.53p,1z,_F_BnlIe4V8SFQqvw2nLWQ

This seems a more likely place to see a road veering to the right.

Another location given to @RuthRoperWylde was at the junction of the A21 with the A25 at Bat and Ball but that is some way from Gracious Lane and is now the A225/A25 junction (Although that may have been the old A21)

So are these stories from the old A21 or the new by pass? Is there a link between the suicides and any newer ghost reports or is there something about this area that attracts tragedy? Gracious Lane Bridge is I'd guess not that busy compared to other bridges in the area (A25/A21 for instance) and the height I'd imagine pretty much guarantees a swift end even without the traffic below which may be the attraction to someone in that state.

Whoops! Yes, I suppose the road layout on the new road could confuse there, especially at night. Not a very likely place to see a real pedestrian though.

Just a thought here. but many cars now have some sort of collision warning system that alerts you if you are in danger of hitting anything. Has anyone with one of these systems reported one of the "jumped out in front of me ghosts" and if so did it trigger the collision alert?

Think this one may be new to this forum:

Older Lady

Location: Maenan (Clwyd) - A470 close to Maenan Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2009
Further Comments: A driver screamed and slammed on the brakes as an older woman stepped out in front of their car. No one else in the vehicle had seen the woman, but the driver and occupants looked around the immediate area and checked for damage on the car in case someone had been struck. No evidence of an accident could be found.

Like this one:

Thin Woman

Location: Glossop - A57 Hurst Reservoir area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: April 2017, 23:00h
Further Comments: Returning over the hills from a friend's house, a driver spotted a woman on the side of the road. She was thin, tall, and eerie. The driver was scared and drove on, only to see the same woman two hundred yards (180 metres) further down the road. The driver did not use the road again.

This one too:

Figure

Location: Knutsford - Tatton Mile (road running next to Tatton Park)
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 19 October 2009, approximately 22:30h, 05 March 2021
Further Comments: Driving with his full beams on, in 2009 this driver spotted the figure of a man standing in the road with his hand out, as if he wanted the car to stop. As the car drew closer, the figure vanished, causing the driver to swerve out of shock. Twelve years later, a couple in their car spotted a tall dark figure facing the road by the end of the wall. The figure looked curious enough for them to turn the car around to have another look, but no one could be found and there was no other traffic.

A list of the fatalities in the Seven Oaks rail accident was published in the South Western Gazette in 1927, I can't get back to the site but I think that was the name of the paper, hopefully people can see the screen shot, the record is quite faint, one of the casualties Mr Honeywell, died later but not sure about the other Miss Eldridge's fate

Truckers' Strange Encounters with the Unexplained

The life of a trucker is often a lonely one, traversing vast expanses of endless roads, often alone at night. It might come as no surprise that truckers often have strange tales to tell of life on the road, and while most of these are tethered to the domain of the explainable, this is not always the case. Here we will look at a collection of very odd encounters truck drivers have had out on lonely expanses of road that seem to defy rational explanation.

From La Voz, Argentina - I don't have time to translate at the moment, it's in Spanish. After a quick read through, I don't see any reason why it couldn't have been a real person, although I haven't watched the video. It is said to have happened on Saturday (20th July 2024, I suppose).

Did a trucker from Córdoba transport the “ghost” of a woman in the back of his vehicle? Is it just a shadow or an effect? The news with the story of a group of truck drivers from Cordoba went viral in the last few hours, and on our channel “Viral” we reported on this content that quickly became the most read.

What Cordoban truck drivers say about the “ghost”
A group of truck drivers from the city of Jesús María, in Córdoba, experienced a strange situation over the weekend, but one that they consider “has no logical explanation.” They speak of an “apparition.” It all happened when several colleagues were traveling from the port of Santa Fe to Córdoba and were traveling along the route that crosses the town of Totoras, in Santa Fe. The local site Estación FM reported the information.

Not too bad for Google - although that last bit should be "He must have been shitting himself more than me" - there are probably more bits to clean up (snigger). As I say above, I don't see any reason why this couldn't have been a real, living person.

When analyzing the images, I am struck by the fact that the image of the young woman looks much clearer than the back of the truck. For example, the black color of the clothing stands out much more than the black color of the posters to the right of the image stuck on the truck. On the other hand, the arms seem to be in a relaxed position, which is not consistent with someone who must be held firmly to avoid falling due to the speed of the truck. It is also not observed that the clothing moved due to the wind produced when traveling along the route.
1721666601208.png

Regarding some countries and 'national faith' - so to speak - I do wonder if the 'hiker'/'ghost' had been in white, would it have been considered a Marian apparition (even allowing for it looking somewhat ridiculous or undignified)?
At least in what I have investigated, the usual Marian apparitions are sedentary, that is, they appear in a place where they can repeat apparitions, produce supposed miracles, originates healing waters, and heal people.
The ghosts of the routes usually move and do not give messages linked to religions when they interact with witnesses.

In relation to the alleged video of the ghost on the road, it is very curious that the name of none of the truckers has not been revealed. Nor that beyond the brief original statements, they have never expanded the information nor have they been interviewed. It seems to me that it is nothing more than a montage, neither a ghost nor a woman who got on a truck.

And the woman doesn;t even look as though she is holding on - in fact she looks far more as though she is looking at a mobile phone...

There's not enough gullible credulousness about ghosts for my liking these days.

And I'd also like to complain that nobody's posted ♫Na na na na na nahhhh...Mothmaaaaan!♫ in his/its thread.

And the woman doesn;t even look as though she is holding on - in fact she looks far more as though she is looking at a mobile phone...
Something else to highlight, the woman's hair does not seem to be moving as would happen when traveling uncovered, in the middle of the route, at approximately 60 km per hour as stated by the truck driver who supposedly filmed the scene.

Some great recent cases have been posted up on the UK Paranormal Database:
