Preposterous Imposters (Identity Thieves; Fraudsters; Etc.)

Shameema Begum?

I wonder if her friends and family are likely to see the ribaldry and knowing looks in the UK coming from what are two very common names. They will be busy dealing with what is likely to be a family crisis.

I think the UK has had cases of non=medical staff impersonating doctors by wearing a white coat? Or is that a UL?

I don't get it - what's wrong with being called Shameema Begum?

I simply pointed out the similarity with the name of some other individual who has also been in the news recently.

Fake marquess struck down by high society bible Debretts.

With an apparently distinguished pedigree and proudly robust views the Marquess of Annaville might well be expected to cut a fine figure in certain circles.

But not all is because it appears with the self-styled Lord Alexander Jackson Maier, eleventh Marquis of Annaville. In reality he’s neither a Lord nor a Marquess.

He is the truth is Alexander Jackson Maier, a 22-year-old African-American pupil raised within the metropolis of New Rochelle, in New York State.

But Mr Maeir has managed to influence numerous publications that he’s the final of a protracted line of Irish [aristocrats].

This self-identified fugitive from Florida justice who'd been in the wind for 14 years was brought back from Mexico to face the music. It turned out he wasn't really the man Florida authorities had been seeking. In fact, he was a fugitive facing charges in 2 other states.
Wrong fugitive: Man arrested in Mexico is not Polk County DUI suspect wanted for 14 years, FHP says

The Florida Highway Patrol announced Friday that the man who was captured in Mexico earlier this week and believed to be a Polk County man who had been on the run for 14 years is actually a completely different fugitive.

The FHP announced the arrest of a man who they believed was Brian Dale Andrews on Wednesday. According to troopers, the man was arrested and returned to the United States after he had identified himself to Mexican authorities as Andrews, who has been wanted in Polk County for 14 years in connection with a deadly DUI crash. ...

But on Friday, troopers said the United States Marshal’s Service confirmed that the man they had in custody was, in fact, another fugitive named Ernest McBride. McBride has warrants out from Arkansas and Missouri.

Despite similar physical characteristics, troopers said fingerprint comparisons proved the man they had taken into custody was McBride, not Andrews. ...

Andrews was 29 years old at the time of the crash that claimed the lives of Danny and Patricia McCown. Authorities said he had a suspended license and was found to have a BAC of 0.315, nearly four times the legal limit. ...

Andrews went on the run after he was released from the Polk County Jail, before two DUI manslaughter charges were filed against him. ...

Man Posing as Police Officer Pulled Over Off-Duty Deputy Who Recognized Him As Imposter From Earlier ‘Domestic Incident’: Sheriff

A Louisiana man was arrested this week after law enforcement authorities say he impersonated a police officer and tried to execute an unlawful traffic stop on another vehicle. Unfortunately for the alleged counterfeit cop, the driver of the vehicle he is said to have pulled over was not only an off-duty sheriff’s deputy — he was a sheriff’s deputy who responded to a domestic violence call earlier in the year involving the alleged imposter patrolman. Bottom line: the deputy knew the defendant wasn’t a member of law enforcement, the local sheriff has said.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that Vincent Vinny Marks, 27, of Plaquemine, La., was taken into custody on Monday and faces one felony charge of False Personation of a Peace Officer. ...

‘I Will Shoot You’: Man Accused of Posing as Police Officer, Holding Driver at Gunpoint After Road Rage Incident

A Tennessee man posing as a police officer on Sunday evening used his personal vehicle to pull over another driver and hold them at gunpoint following a road rage incident ...

Clifford Polly Jr. allegedly used his personally-owned black 2016 Dodge Charger — which was equipped with red and white flashing “wig wag” lights on the front and back — to block the other car’s path before pulling out a gun and pointing it at the driver, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said.

According to a police report ... , at the time of the incident Polly was wearing a uniform “consistent with [a] police officer,” which included a “duty belt” and patches that said he was “private duty law enforcement.”

The 34-year-old Polly — who said that he worked for a Nashville security company — allegedly told investigators that the driver of the other vehicle intentionally blocked him in, making it impossible for him to drive away. But police said it was later revealed that after their initial interaction, Polly “made a U-turn and initiated his personal vehicle’s ‘wig wag’ lights, then drew a pistol equipped with a light” ...

With his firearm aimed at the other driver, Polly shouted, “I don’t want to shoot you” and told the person to “get back in your vehicle,” the warrant said.

WKRN also reported that a witness told police they heard Polly use his cruiser-esque personal vehicle’s megaphone speaker to tell the victim, “I will shoot you” ...

WKRN reported that Polly was taken into custody late Sunday evening on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal impersonation of a law enforcement officer. ...

California Man with Child Passenger Allegedly Impersonated Cop, Tried to Pull Over Woman Using Pickup Truck with Red and Blue Lights

A California man was taken into custody this week for allegedly impersonating a police officer and attempting to make a traffic stop on another vehicle using his own illegally equipped Ford F-150 pickup truck which had a small child passenger inside ...

... Ryan Lee Meeker, a 45-year-old resident of San Jacinto, used a white pickup truck—registered in his name and fitted with red and blue light and a siren—to pull over a female driver in the French Valley area of Southern California.

According to authorities, the woman quickly realized that something was not right with the pretend officer and his vehicle, and fled the scene soon after stopping her vehicle. The victim’s car, however, was equipped with a dashboard camera that captured the entire bizarre incident on film, which she then turned over to CHP. Based on the victim’s dash cam footage, investigators with CHP were able to identify the alleged suspect, his vehicle, and his home residence.

... CHP officers executed a search warrant on Meeker’s home and his Ford F-150, finding it still equipped with the siren as well as red and blue lights in the grille and back window. CHP’s search of the vehicle also turned up “two handguns, an additional light-bar, a total of four badges (marked ‘security’), and a gun belt.”

... Meeker was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a peace officer. But the alleged presence of a child passenger in the fake police vehicle has also led to charges. ...

Man attempts to impersonate police officer while being pulled over in Westmoreland County

A Mt. Pleasant man is facing charges after police said he claimed to be a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop with a state trooper.

Jonathan Matthew Kauric II, 38, was charged with impersonating a public servant, disorderly conduct, false identification to police and several summary traffic violations after the incident ...

Police said Kauric’s Honda Accord was pulled over just before 11 a.m. for an inoperable tail light and expired inspection.

Court documents state that Kauric got out of the vehicle and walked toward the patrol unit. When asked for his identification, Kauric became hostile toward the trooper and claimed to be a police officer who was brought to Western Pennsylvania as part of a six-man team to investigate police misconduct, but was unable to provide police identification.

According to police, it was found that Kauric is not employed as an officer and hadn’t been certified through the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission. ...

A woman is under investigation in Australia for allegedly pretending to be a doctor.

Australian media report that the 27-year-old worked for eight months at Sydney's Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. But the hospital said it discovered that she was not registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), which accredits medical staff in the country. New South Wales Police are now investigating.

A hospital spokeswoman said in a statement that an employee who started work in January this year was "immediately removed from their duties" when the authorities discovered on Monday that they were not accredited. It added that this person was "fully supervised" throughout their time working at the hospital in south-west Sydney. Bankstown-Lidcombe has reported the case to AHPRA and is also conducting an internal investigation.

According to 7News the woman had failed her final exams and faked documents to get the job as a junior doctor.

'Nurse' nabbed for impersonation
CBC News · Posted: Jul 06, 2010 1:09 PM MT | Last Updated: July 6, 2010

Police in Ontario arrested a woman accused of impersonating a nurse, the day after Alberta officials issued a public warning about her.

Brigitte Cleroux Marier was charged in Alberta with impersonation and released on bail, but she failed to show up for a court appearance earlier this year and was wanted on a warrant in both Calgary and Ontario.

Marier was arrested on Tuesday, according to reports.

Marier illegally got work as a registered nurse in Alberta by presenting forged documents, said the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) ...

Despite not holding a valid practice permit or registering with CARNA, Marier administered injections and performed other acts that are considered dangerous when done by an unqualified person ...

A Calgary clinic called the college in 2008, asking about Marier's background and licence. A police investigation followed, resulting in the impersonation charge.

Marier was convicted of similar offences in Ontario and sentenced to six months in jail and fined $60,000.

In 2005, Marier got a nursing job at a hospital in a small Ontario city after stealing and falsifying a legitimate nurse's registration certificate. In 2006, Marier tried to get work as a registered nurse in the Ottawa area, said the College of Nurses of Ontario.

A Twitter post by the Edinburgh branch of the University and College Union (UCU) said: “A reminder of UCU’s strong position in support of trans inclusion. Liberation cannot be built on exclusion”. It contained a link to a policy document endorsed by the UK-wide union that states: “UCU has a long history of enabling members to self-identify, whether that is being black, disabled, LGBT+ or women.

One staff member at Edinburgh University, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, claimed that trans rights activists within the union were seeking to “weaponise” the issue and force out academics who expressed scepticism over the concept of self-identification.

“The branch is being used as a platform for an ideological crusade, with no resistance from University of Edinburgh management,” they said.

Robert Davis, a professor of religious and cultural education at Glasgow University, commented on Twitter: “Was Rachel Dolezal a member [of UCU]? Might have saved her a lot of bother.” ...

In June, Ann Henderson, a former rector of Edinburgh University, said that she feared for her safety on campus after students falsely accused her of transphobia. Neil Thin, 60, a senior lecturer, stepped back from teaching at Edinburgh University this year after campus activists claimed he had voiced “problematic” views on social media and had penalised candidates who challenged him. A Collin County man was arrested on charges of impersonating a district court judge.

Steven Weinstein, a 54-year-old Plano resident, was arrested on Oct. 4 and charged with impersonating a public servant ... He was arrested again on Monday for possession of a controlled substance.

Asst. Chief Deputy Nick Bristow of the Collin County Sheriff’s Office said Weinstein posed as a judge in an attempt to get money from a victim.

A 45-year-old woman stole and assumed the identity of her own 22-year-old daughter to pose as a college student for 2 years.
45-Year-Old Woman Impersonates 22-Year-Old Student for Two Years, No One Notices

A 45-year-old woman who stole her estranged daughter’s identity managed to fool everyone that she was 22 for two years, enrolling in university and dating boyfriends who were convinced she was in her early 20s.

Laura A. Oglesby risks spending five years behind bars without parole, as part of a plead deal, after admitting to stealing her 22-year-old daughter’s identity and comitting Social Security fraud. The 45-year-old woman had lived with her daughter in Jonesboro, Arkansas, before moving in Missouri, after they lost contact. In 2016, after reportedly fraudulent Social Security card in her daughter’s name, she used that card to obtain a driver’s license. A year later, the woman also enrolled at Southwest Baptist University in Missouri, as her daughter, and even applied for student loans and grants in her name. The charade went on for two years, and no one once questioned Oglesby’s age, apparently convinced that she was 22. ...

“Everyone believed it,” Chief Jamie Perkins of the Mountain View Police Department said. “She even had boyfriends that believed that she was that age: 22 years old.”

Even Avery and Wendy Parker, the Mountain View couple who took her in from a nearby women’s shelter, were convinced that she was 22, if not younger.

“She was a giddy, silly girl. She was 22 but she acted 17,” Avery Parker said. “I try real hard to see the 45-year-old Laura, so I can hate her. But all I can see is a 22-year-old Lauren, who I just wanted to help.” ...

Authorities described the case as one of the most complex and surprising cases of identity theft they had worked on, noting that the 45-year-old woman “had completely assumed becoming a younger person in her early twenties,” from her clothes, make up and personality.

Laura A. Oglesby, now 48-years-old, was caught in 2018, when authorities in Arkansas contacted Mountain View Police Department searching for a “Ms Oglesby” who had stolen her own daughter’s identity in 2017 to commit financial fraud and embezzle over $25,000. ...

“She was just running because she was in a domestic violence relationship, and she’d been running for years,” Chief Perkins said Oglesby told the police. “We don’t know her life story outside of what she told us, but we know what happened here. She had lived that life for a couple of years and basically just ruined her daughter’s credit.”

Oglesby is now facing prison time, and has also been ordered to pay $17,521 to the university as well as restitution to her daughter Lauren for identity theft.

Here's an unusual case of fake impersonation - an entire fake registered school was established as a vehicle for showcasing athletes who couldn't pursue their athletic aspirations at colleges.
School scrutinized after ESPN blowout is ‘scam,’ Ohio finds

An Ohio school whose legitimacy was scrutinized after its supposedly top-tier football team got clobbered in an ESPN-televised game didn’t live up to its billing educationally either: It turned out to be “a scam,” according to an investigation by the Ohio Department of Education.

... Gov. Mike DeWine said he is asking the attorney general and other officials to determine whether any laws were broken by what claimed to be the Columbus-area Bishop Sycamore High School. DeWine also said he’ll work with state education officials and lawmakers on enacting changes recommended by the department to avoid a repeat of the situation. ...

The state found no evidence that Bishop Sycamore enrolled multiple students this year and concluded it didn’t meet minimum standards, including for academic offerings and student safety, according to the ODE investigation launched after the team’s televised 58-0 loss to Florida-based powerhouse IMG Academy in August. ...

Bishop Sycamore’s report filed with the department for this school year listed only one enrolled student and stated its physical address as a home in a residential neighborhood.

In a call with a department official last month, Bishop Sycamore administrator Andre Peterson characterized his program as a way to get more exposure for football players who were having trouble getting into colleges, according to the ODE report. ...

ODE concluded Bishop Sycamore wasn’t a school but “a way for students to play football against high school teams and potentially increase students’ prospects of playing football at the collegiate level.”

“The cost of this dream for those students wasn’t just the tuition charged to attend the school,” the department said in its report Friday. “The price was the education the students were entitled to receive.” ...
