Toffeenose, who is/was 'purple accie'?

Carole

it was suppose to be a guy who's face was covered with a purple birthday mark. i'm from liverpool but i have mates from glasgow, newcastle and from outside belfast who have heard of him.
the UL legend has him as a psychotic sex offender who is strong enougth to beat up an entire rugby tem (one story i heard as a child, i like that cos i have a rabbid hatred of rugby).

Purple Accie/Acky

Growing up on the edge of Merseyside, I would hear from the other kids in school about the local bogeyman, Purple Acky / Accie. The name, being unusual, stuck in my head. From tales told in the school yard, he was big bloke, possibly black (my area was mostly white and Asian), who liked to hang about the train station and approach young lads. Apparently he had a taste for muscular boys, and would ask if you liked to work out before attacking you. We all knew not to go into the station or public toilets after dark, as Purple Acky would "get you".

I'd heard stories from first hand "witnesses", who of course were lucky enough to have escaped, but felt it was all tales to scare the lads; full of all the usual bogeyman stuff, mixed in with a few lad's hang ups and fears.
It was exciting stuff to listen to, but I wrote it all off.

However, a few years later, whilst at university, I saw the name in an article in a national newspaper. The details of the article are hazy, but I believe it was over the arrest of a guy for stalking of a young football reserves player (possibly with Everton). The stalker had been known in the area as "Purple Acky". I guessed then that he had been real all along. It suprised me at the time, as I thought he was just a local thing. There was even a picture of the bogeyman beside the article if memory serves me right.
I didn't keep the paper, I don't remember which one it was, but it was only a few years ago (94-97).

As the stories of him seem to have spread over a wide area, maybe the name has become a tag for dodgy guys all over. Maybe the football stalker was living out life as an "Acky". Or maybe this was the real one.
Any Evertonians out there remember anything about this, or has anyone heard of Acky recently?

i'm an evertonian and i don't remember the purple acky thing being related to the club. plus i seem to remember the story from being very young as well (mid 80's).
i think the stalker may have picked up the nickname from the already existing UL.
i'm off to try and google again and see if i can find anymore about an oringin for this UL.

Purlple Acky cont...

Further to the previous Merseyside tales of Purple Acky, i'm from Wirral and along with friends of the time remember the story of Purple Acky doing the rounds in the mid/late 80's. Whether it was the bloke from the other ULs in his early days or just one in a long line of Purple Acky tales, I don't know, but the same physical descriptions and behaviour applied. If it's of any relevance, the racial/social background of my area was mostly white and conservative so the scare story of a large black man assaulting boys would seem to follow the obvious bigotted scare story of 'if it's different, it's bad'. I am currently working in Liverpool itself and have heard the same tale from colleagues from all over Merseyside. Does anyone know if the name Purple Acky is just a localised version of a widespread story, or does the whole package travel far and wide?

Purple Ackie

A few years ago I worked with an ex CID policeman who told me the whole story of Purple Ackie. He is a real individual so I have to be circumspect for legal reasons. He was involved in incidents of alleged sexual assaults on boys. He is not a UL but may turn into one as time passes.

UK UL "Purple Aki" in prison

Pardon my bringing this thread back from the dead, but the UK UL Purple Aki has recently been sentenced to six years imprisonment for "harrassment" and intimidating a witness.

You can read the story:
https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/5231348.man-jailed-for-harrassment/

Man jailed for harrassment

24th December 2003

A PREDATOR who preyed on young boys - known as Purple Aki - is beginning a six-year jail sentence.

Detectives launched a painstaking investigation, codenamed Operation Ice, to ensnare Akinwale Arobieke, aged 42, who persistently harassed young boys.

Last week he was sentenced at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to 15 charges of harassment and one of intimidating a witness.

While the bulk of his offending was carried out in St Helens, he is a notorious figure in the Warrington area.

Warnings about Purple Aki have been common currency in playgrounds across Warrington for many years.

His tactics included approaching young boys at sports clubs, gyms and colleges, and asking to feel their muscles.

Det Supt Mike Dale praised the resolve of witnesses, who were determined to see Arobieke face justice.

He said Arobieke had been "persistent in his pursuit and harassment of young men".

In court Arobieke accepted his conduct could provoke fear but denied any sexual gratification and said he believed he had a genuine friendship with the youngsters.

Restraining orders were issued by sentencing judge Edward Slinger, banning him from contacting any of the boys involved in the case.

Seems the UL had real origins, no doubt exaggerated in the telling.

The explanation I was given was given was that this mans skin was so black, it looked purple in a certain light. And no, it doesn't make sense to me either.

purple ackie is not an urban legend, but many of the stories about him may be. he is a big guy, "so black he's purple", thats where the nickname comes from. Used to be found hanging around the courts, magistrates and crown, listening to trials, etc., allegedly works for various "family businesses" in the liverpool area. He was in the papers a while back, intimidating witnesses during the Ellie Davies trial I seem to remember, and also that story about thr rugby team near manchester.

and i just read that piece from the st. helens star which basically says all that. ah well.

On the last day of the 97-98 football season, I was in my local watching Arsenal beat Everton to claim the Premiership. In this pub we get all types of people; scousers, scots, geordies, etc. Basically, everyone that hates Man Utd! What made me remember this though, is that when an Everton player called Oster (I can't think of his first name) played the ball, one of the scousers in the bar shouted "Padeophile!" every time. This went on for nearly the whole match. This player was only about 18 at the time as well! People were looking at this bloke, and only stopped when he noticed kids in the bar.
Maybe Toffeenose could throw light on this. Is it related to the above, or just Merseyside football-lore, such as the Beardsley/Dalglish's wife rumours of a few years ago.

the young lad is jonny oster. i have no idea why some one would be shouting peadophile at him when a game is on the telly (i'm usually quite upto good on libelous stories about footy players (don't worry mods, i won't put any on the board :D )).

i'm quite glad this thread's came back from the dead, it's good to see the origin behind what could be described as a childhood 'folk-devil'.

edit: just remembered on the 'beardsley/daglesh wife story i think it's common UL when a talented player leaves a club that it must be something to do with some player/managers wife shananagins. i remember this being said about a player (who for the life of me i can't remeber which one) and howard kendals partner for a reason foe him leaving everton. that wasn't true in any way shape or form (that much i can remember).

Probably something stupid like he was seeing a 15 year old, if he was only 18 that'd be no big deal but to the kind of nob-head who has to shout something when watching football on TV in a pub that'd be enough to base a 'funny' comment on.

Purple Acky again...

Strange as this may seem, the story of Purple Acky got as far as my home town. I live in Leigh, which is about 25 miles from liverpool, about 15 miles from St Helens.

When reading the posts, they stirred a childhood memory. I thought it was from earlier, maybe in the late 70's, though I suppose it could have been in the early 80's.

In the area of Leigh where I lived as a child, we did have the legend of the "blue nun"! She rode a blue motorbike that was built by the devil himself. She would kidnap and torture you, before burying you alive. When I was five, the girl next door (who was three years older than me) had me cr4pping myself at night...B1tch! It was probably her, who told me about Purple Acky!

Mark :D

Purple Aki is the main one I remember as a kid - I was asking about him the other day and everyone reckoned he was real and would rape you if he caught you (I had always assumed he was a UL):

Purple Aki, UPDATE
Purple Aki was well known in the Runcorn area as far back as I could remember.
The rumours went that he would prey on lads, forcing them into anal sex, after which he would engrave a P and an A on each arse cheak.
Several lads I knew went the gym and Aki was well known for appearing and asking to feel their muscles. These lads claimed it had happened to them.
one day on the bus on the way home from sixth form college, Aki got on my bus. My first real evidence that he was not a myth.
He was that black he was purple.
He came and sat by us all on the bus, harassing each and every one of us, asking if we went the gym.
In the end the bus driver booted him off, he didnt like this and started to punch the side of the bus.
The rumours continued and only last week he appeared on the front of our local paper.
Some of my mates who never believed that he existed suddenly sent me e-mails saying thay thought he wasnt for real.

Purple Aki, Kirby - UPDATE
Purple Acky is well known throughout Merseyside. I wonder if anyone knows about another character we knew as 'jogger'. When I was a nipper he used to jog around by our house, I grew up in Waterloo. Never muttered a word as far as I know, every time you saw him he was jogging somewhere. I have no idea where he actually lived, he wore a flat cap and a rain mack, he was out in all weathers and occasionally had a loaf of bread under his arm. As I grew up and ventured further afield it became obvious that he didn't just jog near our house and even whilst out on family trips you'd see him in some places a good 15 miles away. I'm pretty sure I've seen him in Southport. He must've been about late 40's when he first came to my attention circa 1977. He kept it up throughout my youth and probably into my late 20's, by which time he had slowed to walking pace. Haven't seem him for a good few years.
NOTE - Latest info is that he's been banged up - can anyone confirm this? - Ed.

The Legend of Purple Aki

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist, and thus it is with Purple Aki.

A figure of fear for generations of Merseyside schoolchildren, one victim was said to have been so beset by terror he gladly cast himself into the path of an oncoming train.

The stuff of urban myth and over-excitable imaginations, surely. But try telling that to the bodybuilders of St Helens . . .

PREDATOR SNARED

Six years for notorious offender who terrorised young sportsmen

A MAN described by detectives as a “predator” because of the way he terrorised the lives of more than 100 young sportsmen has been sent to prison for six years.

Akinwale Arobieke, known universally as ‘Purple Aki’, was sentenced to a six-year jail term after pleading guilty to 15 counts of harassment and a charge of intimidating a witness.

The conviction at Preston Crown Court followed an exhaustive police investigation into Arobieke, 42, from Liverpool, in which 123 young men and teenage boys, mostly from St Helens, were interviewed.

Detectives involved in the probe, codenamed ‘Operation Ice’, revealed how ‘Aki’, about 6ft 2ins tall and powerfully built, would target young men.

Most often the youngsters would be involved with gyms, colleges, and rugby league clubs, both professional and amateur, in St Helens and other rugby league heartlands in the North West.

Obsessive

Described by the parent of one of the young men targeted, as an “urban myth in the flesh”, the notorious Arobieke would often approach his victims and ask to feel their muscles.

Detective Superintendent Mike Dale said: “In his summing up, the judge referred to Arobieke harassing teenagers aged from 13 years upwards, stopping them in the street and engaging in physical contact which was obsessive and going on to take a bizarre interest in their physical and muscular development.

“Over time this has caused his victims to give up social and youth activities like rugby, gym training, and paper rounds because of repeated incidents when they have been terrorised as the result of being followed home all hours of the day and night.

“This is an outstanding example of a tenacious and professional investigation by the detectives in St Helens, in particular Detectives Kilgannon, Pennington, and Johnson, working in partnership with the force’s crimes operation unit.

Traumas

“The officers listened with compassion to the traumas expressed by the victims and gave them every possible means of support.”

At court on Monday, 31 indefinite restraining orders were placed against Arobieke, meaning that he cannot come into contact with victims or witnesses involved in the case. Arobieke has been in prison for the past two years after being convicted of a separate charge.

Purple Aki jailed

THE parents of a St Helens boy – terrorised by an obsessive and dangerous man who was jailed on Monday – have spoken exclusively to The Reporter.

The couple who wish to remain anonymous, spoke after Akinwale Arobieke – known as Purple Aki – aged 42, from Liverpool, was sentenced to six years imprisonment.

The 6ft 5 inches, 20 stone man, pleaded guilty to 15 counts of harassment and one count of witness intimidation at Preston Crown Court.

Sentencing Arobieke, Judge Slinger said: "You are a danger to young men and your behaviour is both strange and obsessive."
He added: "The sentence reflects the need to protect the public as well as to punish you for your crimes."

The case was mounted against Arobieke after 123 people – many from St Helens – were interviewed by police about his harassment of young men.

The couple said: "Many young lads in the town went through a lot of pain and suffering at the hands of this man. We wanted to let them know that they don't have to fear Purple Aki anymore – he is not above the law as he would have had them believe. We also wanted to thank all the young men who came forward to give statements, without which there would have been no case."

Their son's determination to give evidence against Arobieke forced the family into a witness protection programme.

They said: "We had a panic alarm fitted and video surveillance on the house, but we were determined not to allow this man to continue to terrify young lads."

Over a period of three years Arobieke had approached and followed young men in a sinister and persistent manner.
"He would turn up everywhere our son went and knew information about where he lived and details about us and the rest of his family. This obsessive behaviour progressively got worse and Arobieke would force our son to remote places, where he would touch his legs and arms," said the couple.

"When our son came home one time, he was on his knees and physically trembling. It was very frightening and that is when we realised we needed to act."

During the sentencing Arobieke was also subjected to an indefinite Restraining Order that means he must stay away from all the young men involved in the case, their families and home addresses.

Det Supt, Mike Dale, said: "Over the years Akinwale Arobieke has been persistent in his pursuit and harassment of a number of young men, instilling fear into them.

"We are pleased with the sentencing. Most importantly it's to the credit of the witnesses, who despite their fears and apprehensions, have remained steadfast and determined to see justice done and this man prosecuted to stop him from making other peoples' lives a misery."

Arobieke had just finished serving a 30 month prison sentence for threats to kill.

The Legend of Purple Acky

I have just been surfing the web and happened to notice the last line on a message on chavtowns.com.

"Now piss off back to Shite Helens where you belong or I'll set Purple Acky on yer."

I first heard tales of Purple Acky when I was in secondary school. The tale told to me was that he was a huge coloured man who was: 'So black that he's purple.' Who hunted around Liverpool attacking and raping children. After doing his grizzly deed he would carve his initials into the childs butt cheeks.

Now, it may be a generic sick teenage schoolground horror story that is repeted throughout the country but I just wondered if anyone outside Liverpool has a similar UL.

Thats if it is a UL, looking closer on Google I discovered these reputed tales:

"Laura x on 30 December 2003 at 18:34
Believe it or not, Purple Acky wasn't a horror story at all and was actually arrested in Toxteth, Liverpool not too long ago and it being held on charges totalling 67 accounts of raping men. And they're just the men who came forward. The police have been hunting him since i was a child."

"Yes he does exist! Have been unfortunate to meet him on a few occasions. Seen him jump from the third landing in a prison onto the safety netting above the ground floor. He spent a lot of time at the QE II (Queen Elizabeth Lawcourts in Liverpool) sitting in the public gallery making notes, nobody ever knew what he was up to. A very strange individual indeed!! Scary too!
"

"He was about seven feet tall (OK then 6ft 2 or 3) black as they come and boy was he gay. Once got locked up for chasing a young boy across railway lines in Liverpool armed with a meat cleaver. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been locked up for murder.
"

This site has numerous links to newpaper articles regarding a man fitting Mr Ackys description but there are some wild diparagences (sp?). Some say he was caught in 2001, some 2002. He was apparently tried in Liverpool Crown Court and Preston Crown Court. Just a little side note, the Liverpool Echo isn't the most substantial source (often it exaggerates minor stories and repeats the same story multiple times to fill up space) so I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

Any evidence of him actually being real?

Another Purple Acky sighting:

Purple Acky
There was an urban legend around Wigan, St Helens and Liverpool a few years ago about a huge black man who tried to interfere with young boys. We were all warned that if we were bad, "Purple Acky would get us!" I found out a few month ago that he's real!!!! He was arrested in 2002 for trying to fondle a boy!

Yes!
I went to college with a grat many scousers over the years, and from many parts of Merseyside, and I am happy to report that tales of Purple Acky have been told as far afield as wavertree, Crosby, Speke and over the way in Wallasey, so he must indeed be real.
Apparently "he's so black, he's purple", and also very tall...

Purple Acky
To Del Torro the arrogant...I'm from Runcorn and we used to threaten each other with the prospect of being kidnapped by Mr Acky. For some reason, the rumour was that he carved P and A on your buttocks...maybe that was just us. This was about 10 years ago though, had no idea the legend spread so far.

The purple acky thing has made it to Australia!!When i was 6(i think) I was told of Purple Acky and that if i was bad and went out after dark i would be 'gotten'.I did'nt to the shops after 3:00 until a year later.

Purple Acky!
As far as us kids were concerned, he lived in a disused railway tunnel in West Derby, Liverpool. Rumoured to have purple hair and a penchant for child-murder, we never actually saw him. Thinking about it years later, I assumed he was 'made up'. But it does appear he was an actual nutter. That's reassuring.
(I helped save b3ta! superfly_TNT, Fri 17 Sep 2004, 11:01 )

Someone's already posted this, haven't they? :nonplus:

I thought the Purple Ackey legend had been around much longer than for it to be based on a bloke who is now in his 40s, also for longer than northern England has had many Nigerian immigrants.

Maybe this Aki called himself Purple Aki after the existing legend?

Will have to ask my mum about this, her family are from St Helens...

Purple Aki...

Stumbled across some stuff about him alledgedly carving initials into (or merely damaging) young boys' buttocks: almost certainly part of the myth, as no details of this lurid aspect are reported in the press coverage of his trial and subsequent imprisonment.

It's an interesting example of urban legend meets urban fact. Quite diquieting to think that a bogeyman 'known' to a generation or two actually turnes out to have a very real physical incarnation.

purple aki is definitely real, having met the guy many years ago. asked me where i worked out, whether i did kickboxing etc., i realised who he was, made my excuses and got out of there sharpish.

my girlfriend worked in the crown courts a few years ago, and he used to sit in on court cases regularly taking notes.
