My Little Pony Fans Are Ready to Admit They Have a Nazi Problem
Even a niche subculture built around magical cartoon horses is reckoning with racism.
KAITLYN TIFFANYJUNE 23, 2020

My Little Pony fans have had a Nazi problem for a long time.

That sounds just as strange no matter how many times you say it. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a cartoon television show about friendship, compassion, and a group of magical horses with names such as Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy who live in a fantastical land called Equestria. It’s marketed to children. Nevertheless, it has an extremely dedicated adult fandom, which is mostly made up of men, or “bronies,” as they’ve been referred to for nearly a decade. Most of these men are white. Some of these men are vocal white supremacists.

Is this like the people that are furry nazis? Isn't MLP and furries supposed to be about acceptance?

I used to know a 'brony' - a friend of a friend. Definitely NOT a Nazi. He was totally gay.

Ernst Rohm. Gay Nazi, leader of the Brownshirts.

You said someone couldn't be a nazi because they were gay, just pointing out that ain't necessarily so. I'm not saying your friend is a nazi.
Did I? Notice that those 2 sentences were separate.
But yeah, I take your point.

This kind of thing is reasonably common. I heard a couple of people discussing it on a right-wing livestream, but with 'The Cookie Monster' as the baker, and it wasn't until the figure 6,000,000 came up that my ears pricked. Sure enough, before long, they were onto 'specialised baking equipment', 'the lack adequate ground for the disposal of such a number of cookies' and 'aerial photography of the baking facilities'.

You'll more often hear people referred to as 'identitarians' and 'race-realists' in the younger generations, and much of what they say and do skirts on the edge of irony, but they're certainly there in number. Subverting popular memes and characters such as My Little Pony is precisely the kind of activity they go in for: on one level it's an edgy joke (and a feasibly deniable one), while on the other it pushes broad themes and ideas before the minds of an audience that would otherwise not have encountered them.

Wasn't Hermann Goering flamboyantly gay as well?

You know, at first glance I wouldn't have made such a connection - but now you point it out, it does seem a bit 'off'.

This whole thing depressed me so much this morning I reckon I have at long last sworn off all news (and I was down to only scanning the paper anyway, just in case some edict had come out). The world is far too full of insanity. How people find the energy to hate other people (let alone whole categories of other people) I have no idea. I've cheered up a bit since as I have been thinking about insects. So there we are.

If you read the article (if you can stomach it) you'll see beyond the apparent absurdity there's the problems affecting any online community, from Twitter to this place. One of the reasons IMDB closed its forums was how toxic it was getting.

It appears wherever you go online there will be a drift towards extreme views cropping up, it's like a pathology, ironic when stuff like adult MLP fans were attracted to that brand because it was seen as a safe space for the mentally sensitive and unwell.

Maybe it's about time we addressed this in the cultural bigger picture, more than simply "cancelling" anything that doesn't meet an increasingly strict criteria, or dismissively labelling those reactions as PC gorn mad. A nice, reasonable middle ground. I say that, but maybe we shouldn't discuss it too heatedly here, the mods will have a collective fit otherwise.

I used to do the National Scooter Rallies in the 1980s after the Mod Revival and The Scooter Scene was fun right up to 1989 and bands like Screwdriver was still popular alongside Ska, Northern Soul and Psychobilly.

I think he just liked dressing up. I believe he designed his own uniform and baton thing he liked to carry.

I could do a search and be more precise but it's early and I'm not up for reading about Nazis just yet o_O
I studied modern German history at university (including seminars with Richard J Evans, now knighted, Penguin's expert in the David Irving trial) and I can't bring myself to read about Nazism at all any more. It just chills me to the bone, though I have no regrets about studying it. It also means I tend not to bandy about the terms Nazi of Fascist online, except in the correct context.

That is exactly the point.

It's deniable to some extent, circumvents automatic censorship but it instantly intelligible to those who know the cant of antisemitism.
I think you've mis-spelt 'cant'. (Sorry!)

I've a few books on Nazi Germany, as a result of my early teens interest in Wargaming. The Germans did make some smashing kit. But I reread them occasionally to remind myself what real fascists were like.

One thing that mob always managed to cling on to – they always looked dapper. From Hitlers Nazis and Mussolini’s Fascists right down to the Skinhead movement – clean lines, striking diagonals, neat hair and quality footwear; always smartly turned out.

But the latest lot – oh my word: the Boogaloos look like they’ve just crashed a gig, and weren’t sure if it was a pool party or a paintball session, so dressed for both; the Proud Boys appear to believe they have first dibs on Fred Perry - about 70 years after the rest of the world discovered it (and Gavin McInnes looks like an angry hipster who has been tipped over the edge because someone told him his home-brewed craft ale tastes like it’s been strained through a fat welder’s underpants); Charlottesville - the tan chino’s and polo shirts thing made those chaps look like they should be manning the tills in a discount computer store or serving coffee at an airport. And those baseball helmets just make the wearer look like they have someone who looks after them.

Milo Yiannopoulos appears to be channeling Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen after a heavy night on the rhubarb liqueur followed by a minor car accident, and probably has to wear those dark glasses because his shirts make his eyes bleed. And Steve Bannon looks like a bundle of unwashed hospital laundry that a bear slept in and then threw down a well.

The British lot are really boring by comparison - off the peg football casuals with the odd flat capped and Barboured meathead done up like a cartoon farmer, presumably as some kind of weird contrast.

I don’t know what the world’s coming too.

And that’s not politics – I am talking exclusively about their terrible zhoosh!

nice bit of Polari :) . I'm old enough to remember Round the Horne - Rambling Syd Rumpoe and Julian and Sandy were my favourite bits.

Rambling Syd was okay, but Julian and Sandy was absolute genius - a perfect symbiosis of fantastic writing and great performing.

Nicky Crane was the story that the far right didn't like in the 80's and 90's and died of Aids but 1 year later the band he body guarded Screwdriver died in a car crash ?

Ian Stuart Donaldson, the lead singer, died as a result of the crash - but not the rest of the band.

Nicky Crane was pretty openly gay - certainly in the last years of his life, but also while an active neo-Nazi. He went through a phase of attempting to reconcile his homosexuality with Neo-Nazism - even, I think, going so far as to set up regular gay Nazi skinhead meetings. (Important to point out that there's also a gayskin/queerskin culture that does not necessarily have anything to do with the extreme right.) However, by the end he'd turned his back on Nazi ideology.

It's a shame he died so young - often the most effective voices against something are those who were once for it.

Incidentally, and on a slight aside. Probably unsurprisingly, elements of the extreme right ascribe Donaldson's death to the British intelligence services. However - believe it or not - I have also in the past stumbled across sources that claim Donaldson was a Zionist agent. Yes. Really. (I'm not even going to link to the various virtual sumps that hold forth on that particular subject - but they're out there.)

I've been involved in the Skinhead scene since the late 60's the early days had no taint of organised/racism/fascism but by the late 70s early 80s a significant proportion of us felt we were trapped between the glue sniffers on one side and the nazis on the other.

somehow we came through it and not only survived but flourished. These days it's a crombie sta press and loafers or a tonic suit rather than the docs, but i'm still proud to be part of it.

You know my gripe but the Skinhead was that late 60s/early 70s years change depending on region but why did the Skinhead fashion morph into that horrid Glam Rock look The Boot Boy which lasted longer then the original Skin/Suede/Smooth look.
From smarter 3 button suits and clipped hair into that long haired, long collared flared trouser.

Yes in the later years I think most of the Nazi Skinheads on the scene knew the rumours about Nicky Crane and just turned a blind to it but never knew about the regular gay Nazi skinhead meetings and wondered what years was that ?.
I apparently Ian Donaldson was a talent artists and often wonder how big they would of come on the independent circuit if they would Nazi's and going have to dig up the stuff about him being a Zionist agent.

...Yes in the later years I think most of the Nazi Skinheads on the scene knew the rumours about Nicky Crane and just turned a blind to it but never knew about the regular gay Nazi skinhead meetings and wondered what years was that ?...

I stated he was 'openly gay', which, on reflection, is a misleading oversimplification of the situation during his active neo-Nazi years. Crane doesn't seem to have had much of an issue with his own sexuality at all, and juggled both aspects of his life without that sense of tortured furtiveness that blights the lives of some. His denials have the air of being almost half-hearted, and I think that's because he knew he didn't have to try very hard, for several reasons: he was utterly idolised; he was nails - and no-one in their right mind wanted to risk having it out with him; the extreme right was simply much more in denial than he was.

There is a long BBC News article on Crane somewhere that I think mentions the pub meetings. But I've got a paper article in a box of old research stuff that I think even names the particular East End pub which was the venue. (Long time since I've been in those boxes - not sure I dare go back.)
