Ridiculous Accidents

There's a sidebar item in the latest FT mentioning a man in Aletshausen, Munich who burned his block of flats down when he tried to warm his walnuts with a hairdryer, but there's no trace of the story online that I can see. Consider this a trace.

I'm sure Max would never make such a mistake.

A hiker in Missouri was seriously injured after being shot by a hunter who mistook him for a turkey, according to the St. Charles County Police Department.

In a statement posted to Facebook, officials said they responded just before 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to a hunter-related incident on the Lewis and Clark Trail at the August A. Busch Memorial and Weldon Spring Conservation Area. Rescue crews used utility vehicles to reach the man, who was eventually air-lifted to a trauma center, reported NBC News affiliate KSDK.

Neither the wounded hiker nor the hunter have been identified. The hiker was in serious condition after being shot, officials said, according to KSDK.

Let's not jump to conclusions here. Any chance he was wearing a turkey suit?

What is the reason for the hunter shooting in a Conservation Area?

Is that allowed in the US?

From the link.

The Missouri Department of Conservation was managing a turkey hunt at the time of the shooting, and a sign near the entrance of the trail stated that the hunt was ongoing until 1 p.m, according to KSDK. Sunday is the final day of turkey hunting season in Missouri.

Ah, I read a story along similar lines. The hunter shot a wolf and wounded it in the leg, but it escaped. Later, a person in the village was found to have an injury in the same leg.

What we have here, my friends, is clear evidence of a wereturkey.

lnsert joke about good gobblers being worthy of preservation.

Boring fact: “Since 1903, the earliest year of data available, the per capita rate of gun accident deaths has decreased 95 percent, from 3.1 to 0.14 deaths per 100,000 population.”

As long as you dont go hunting with Dick Cheney

Not here in Australia...Both flora and fauna are considered an integral part of a conservation area.

Which is why I posted the question...innit.

A passenger train carrying 213 people has crashed into an empty, newly repaired train, travelling the opposite direction on the same track, in a a tunnel in Kuala Lumpur.

"More than 200 people have been injured in a train crash in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

A metro train carrying 213 passengers collided with an empty one in a tunnel near the Petronas Towers, at about 20:45 (12:45 GMT), police said.

The empty train had just been repaired, and was going in the opposite direction on the same track as the full one.

District police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah told reporters there was no sign of foul play."

This is what it looks like when teens crash their car into your home - via the roof. This car came down through the master bathroom ceiling, mere feet from where the homeowners were sleeping.

I must admit, I'm not big on his comedy, but he does seem like a decent chap.

Spoiler: fortunately nothing serious happened.

A two-year-old boy fell from the pier in Zinnowitz on Usedom after he was allegedly placed on the parapet by his mother in the evening sun for a photo. This is stated in the report of the rescue coordination center. The 34-year-old mother jumped immediately on Thursday evening and injured her ankle. The Zinnowitz pier runs from the higher road about four meters over the beach and then about 300 meters into the Baltic Sea.

And you even get a helicopter ride:

The bridge is several meters high at this point, but the water is not very deep. Eyewitnesses alerted the rescue forces. An emergency doctor determined that the child had apparently survived the fall without injuries. He was nevertheless flown together with the mother by a rescue helicopter to a hospital.

Wait....WHAT????

Comedian John Bishop has revealed he was involved in a car crash when he swerved to avoid a "big chicken".
The Doctor Who star, 54, said he was driving through Wales on his way to catch a ferry to Ireland when the crash happened.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-57916501
Bishop didn't swerve to avoid the chicken, he was trying to avoid another vehicle that had encountered the chicken first.

There was definitely a big chicken involved in a road crossing event, regardless of who saw it.

Here's another car-gone-airborne accident (partially caught on surveillance video) from New Jersey. The flying car crashed into a Wendy's restaurant during lunchtime, but miraculously no one was seriously injured.
Airborne car strikes vehicle at NJ Wendy's, nearly hits family eating outside

Police in New Jersey say it's nothing short of a miracle that no one was seriously hurt when a car went airborne and crashed into a Wendy's.

It happened around 1 p.m. on Aug. 16.

Police say the driver of a Toyota Corolla was headed southbound on Route 130 near Melrich Road in South Brunswick and then left the roadway.

The car then struck a berm on the property of the Wendy's located at 2533 Route 130 and became airborne.

The vehicle soared through the parking lot, striking a 2017 Audi that was waiting in the drive-thru lane.

Both vehicles were pushed into the building and outside tables.

Police say a family dining outside was nearly struck. ...

The force of the impact shattered the restaurant windows, sending glass throughout the inside of the Wendy's.

Police say, despite the fast-food restaurant being crowded with customers and staff, no one inside the Wendy's was injured. ...

Though police are continuing to investigate, they believe the driver of the Toyota may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash.

One of the weirdest "you're not safe anyway" type of news stories I ever encountered was an accident that killed a woman eating pizza in the break room at the back of the store she worked in. A driver lost control of her car, smashed through the front of the store, plowed through the clothing section, and rammed through the wall of the break room and into the woman on her lunch break. It happened in San Francisco, CA, sometime in the 80s or 90s and was in the newspaper at the time.
