Skinwalker ranch aside - cattle mutilations are still a thing, as is poltergeist activity, dogmen, etc. It hasn't gone away or just died in the 80's. No doubt the show will be atrocious but let's not dismiss everything based on a TV show.

A light pillar could be an explanation....and they should have at least mentioned that...,but what was the source of the light to reflect through ice crystals..? There is no town around there and no moon or sun out.
Regarding Travis Taylor, he seems ok to me, though I was not aware of his past affiliations. Let the show develop. If it's cheesy that will come to light in time. I'm hoping they keep it relatively believable.

The source of the light pillar could be as simple as a set of car headlights. Indeed they look slightly off vertical, so a spotlight of some sort seems a reasonable explanation. Do they do lamping in America?
